Teatro ni Juan premiered their first-ever original musical #ELIE for a limited 3-show run last December 9 and 10. It perfectly tackled how people in this generation use social media as a tool for change while exploring sensitive topics such as gender discrimination, mental health, and cyberbullying. Set in a place where straight people are condemned, we got to see a side where the tables are turned. The two leads, Eman and Girlie, gave personification to teens and the social media culture today, filled with questions about life and self. For the elder characters Boss Abos and Mama Cecil, they represented parenthood truthfully in a ‘traditional vs liberal’ way.

If you’re looking for passion, this community theatre has it. From the neon-themed costume, props, and even their cast album, everything was handmade. The choreography was juicy, the acting very effective, and the vocals were great. The dark and light moments were executed with great care and sensitivity.

#ELIE’s message is loud and clear: find our truth, be accepting, and live with love. Everyone with a beating heart should get the chance to hear and see this piece of art.
