A photo of a gleeful Pope Francis began going viral on social media, which many posts claim to be the Pope’s first official selfie.
The photo surfaced on Instagram from a certain @Vatican.Va account that claimed to be the Vatican’s official Instagram account. However, Vatican officials said that it is not their official account.
Fr. James Martin, SJ, a Jesuit priest, writer, and editor-at-large of the Jesuit magazine America, debunked on his Facebook page this viral “Pope selfie.”
He said:
Apparently, what spread out as the Pope’s first selfie is not a selfie.
Selfie or not, this photo shows how deeply happy the Pope is.
