Social media has been helpful in disseminating information at lightning-fast speed but at the same time, others have taken advantage of this by sharing unverified news. The latest one seems to be that hospitals are noticing that groceries are the source of COVID-19.

According to a message spreading on social media, “So far ang trend sa hospitals now is sa grocery nakukuha ang COVID-19, so if kayang mag-bulk buy, yun na yung gawin. Then paki disinfect mga nabili delata etc. 1:9 ratio Clorox and water. 1 cup Clorox 9 cups water. Paki share na lang.”

Now, the Philippine General Hospital has spoken up to clear the rumors. In a statement, the hospital said, “the Philippine General Hospital would like to inform the general public that there is no such observed trend with our admitted COVID-19 (+) patients acquiring the illness from groceries.”

It added,  “the two most important risk factors noted are (1) travel history from areas with known local transmission, and (2) close contact with COVID-19 (+) patients.”

They also said, “We encourage everyone to verify posts in social media and believe only the ones shared from official channels.”

The hospital ended its post by reminding everyone to be vigilant and to practice social distancing, frequent handwashing, using alcohol, and not touching the face.
