Pacquio vs Horn: Sad day for Filipinos in Brisbane and around the world

By now every Filipino knows that our champion Manny”Pacman” Pacquiao lost his WBO (World Boxing Organization) Welterweight Belt to Australian Boxer Jeff Horn in a Sunday afternoon bout billed as the Battle of Brisbane.

The fight was watched by more than 50,000 people at eh Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Jeff Horn won via Unanimous Decision, 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113 in favor of Horn and was declared the new WBO Welterweight world champion.

I am no boxing analyst or writer but when I was watching the fight of Manny and Jeff Horn I noticed that Jeff Horn’s aggressiveness which he was able to sustain until the 12th round. Manny was also aggressive and determined but this time he had an opponent who was “hungry” to win.

Also noticeable was Horn’s boxing strategy, hit, evade and hug. Horn’s coach Glenn Rushton most likely studied video footages of the fight of Mayweather and Manny. Mayweather used his longer reach and height to his advantages applying the same, hit, evade, and hug (although Mayweather hugged more).

The strategy worked well since our champion is a pound per pound boxer and barely goes the full 12 rounds. Outpunch Manny and you will win.

But Manny is a true champion, fighting till the last round and acknowledging his defeat to a younger boxer. Manny is 38 while Horn only 29.

For me Manny Pacquiao will always be a boxing champion and I know he will also be a champion senator…but that’s another story.
