The North Luzon Expressway is not the only thing being named in honor of former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino.

According to a post from GMANews.com, the Museum of National History of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) said a new species of ants was discovered in the rainforests of Palawan and was named after the former president.

The India-based journal HALTERES reported that ant specialists David Emmanuel General and Perry Archival Buenavente of UPLB named the new species Romblonella coryae (R. coryae) “in honor of the late former president.”

The new ant species was discovered in Cleopatra’s Needle, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

They were described to have a “robust, hard and compact body.”

“It is fitting that a genus named after a Philippine island has a species named after a modern Filipino hero,” the researchers said in their study.

According to the researchers, R. coryae is only the second species of Romblonella was found in the Philippines. The last discovery was made 1935 called R. opaca.
