The reviews are out! Critics and fans alike are raving about Never Not Love You, the new Viva movie directed by Antoinette Jadaone. Starring James Reid and Nadine Lustre, better known as JaDine, the film has been graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board.
It was a different attack on the usual millennial love story: honest and grounded, and for many who have experienced love, is relatable, in one aspect or another. This is how love (and life) is in reality: beautifully covered by neon-lighted aesthetics on the outside, but actually interspersed with cold London mornings. The story follows the evolution of the young and reckless love between Gio and Joanne, whose opportunities in life necessarily take them to two separate continents. The key is to balance self-sacrifice and compromise, and with it comes the question of whether the volatile, passionate relationship can actually survive their personal growth. The last scene (watch out for it!) conveys a myriad of emotions in one silent sequence, and is happily and painfully bittersweet all at once.
The majority have praised the film’s authenticity, the undeniable improvements in the lead actors’ performances, and the unique cinematography people have come to love about indie films, except that this isn’t one. Produced by Viva Films and Project 8 corner San Joaquin, the film uses a formula that is quite experimental for mainstream flicks, but which seems to be responsible for the film’s overwhelmingly positive feedback. It shies away from the usual love triangle reminiscent of Filipino romantic movies, and presents a very raw, unpolished, and accurate depiction of present-day relationships, presented in mood-setting visuals.
Last March 31, TeamReal TV, one of JaDine’s big fan accounts, held a block screening of Never Not Love You at the SM Mall of Asia Cinema 6. WhenInManila.com was in attendance to cover the said event, along with over 300 attendees. A photobooth c/o AC Photography was set-up outside the cinema for all the participants to take advantage of. A sample of the soon-to-be-released Lustrous limited edition box, Nadine Lustre’s new make-up collaboration with BYS Philippines, was also available for swatching and preorder. All the attendees received gift bags from generous sponsors, which included Nature’s Spring, Nails.Glow, Flawlessly U, Emperador HotShot, and JD Team Sponsors. Prior to the movie, raffle prizes were given out, with the major prize being an Instax Mini 9 c/o FujiFilm.
The film has earned Php 81 M to date.
