Singaporean Netizen Posts Letter to Government Asking “PM to Reduce Pinoy Workers in SG”
A certain netizen named Jafri Basron posted an open letter to the Singaporean government through the user-generated content site therealsingapore.com urging the “PM to reduce the number of Pinoy workers in Singapore.” The said letter was addressed to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
On his letter, he said that he is writing “to represent the concern of (an) ordinary Singaporean over the perceived influx of Filipinos holding Employment Pass (EP) and the S-Pass in the employment sector.” He mentioned that large number of Pinoy workers in Singapore is “is causing social problems and resentment among the local community” who are having a hard time finding employment or keeping their current jobs.
Basron claimed that based on his personal experience, Pinoy workers aren’t really experienced and professional enough but they are just willing to accept lower pay compared to the locals. He pointed out that this is the reason why employers choose Pinoy workers rather than Singaporeans. He said that this practice is “unbecoming.”
Basron added that there have been Pinoys who have made “several offensive and provocative posting” on social media against Singaporeans and the Muslim community. “The unbecoming conduct is a result of the Filipinos workers failed to assimilate and conforming to the local society,” he posted. Just recently, a Pinoy nurse working in Singapore was fired due to the offensive remarks that he posted about Singaporeans on his Facebook account. The nurse denied posting the status updates, claiming that his account was hacked.
He aims to persuade the Singaporean government to hire fewer Pinoy workers as “there are other nationalities that are as good and competent like the Filipino workers,” according to him.
