They say that the annual Miss Universe pageant is the Superbowl of the Philippines. And yes, it’s true. It’s that one time a year when everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gathers to root for their contestant. Sadly, the Philippines’ bet Mary Jean Lastimosa only made it to the Top 10, breaking the four-year streak of placing in the Top 5.

This year’s Miss Universe is Paulina Vega of Colombia, beating 87 other contestants. Joining her in the Top 5 are USA’s Nia Sanchez (1st runner up), Ukraine’s Diana Harkusha (2nd runner up), the Netherlands’ Yasmin Verheijen, and Jamaica’s Kaci Fennell (4th runner up).

Vega is a business administration student from Barranquilla, and is the granddaughter of legendary tenor Gastón Vega. This is her first pageant entry, and also her last, as she wants to pursue her studies.

In the Miss Universe competition, she wowed the judges and audience with her national costume, swimsuit, and evening gown.

When asked what her country’s greatest contribution to the world is, Vega answered, “I believe that my country has been an example to be followed by the rest of the countries… We are a persevering people. Notwithstanding many difficulties we have gone through, today we are world leaders in many different matters, and I am proud to represent (my country) for all of you.”
