Mariah Carey Reacts to Failed NYE Performance in the Most Mariah Carey Way Possible

New Year's Eve 2017 In Times Square

The year 2016 is known for taking the lives of many of our greatest. Its last victim: Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Eve performance for ABC’s annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve event.

Carey botched her entire performance, with the Elusive Chanteuse missing the backing track and singing off-tune. Instead of doing something embarrassing, Carey did the most Mariah Carey thing possible: she owned up to it and went full diva.

Watch the full video below:

Carey began her set with the Christmas classic “Auld Lang Syne” and it’s clear that her voice did not match the backing vocals. She then went on to sing “Emotions,” where the same thing happened. She took it in stride, saying “Well, Happy New Year. We can’t hear but I’ll just get through ‘Emotion.'” She soon gave up, adding “All right, we didn’t have a check for this song, so we’ll just say it went to number one.”

Her performance of “We Belong Together” was better, until she just gave up singing, while the pre-recorded track continued to play. She ended her set by commanding her dancers to “bring on the feathers,” and saying “It just don’t get any better.” She promptly walked out.

You have to admit, she looked stunning and she did everything with style.

The following day, she responded to the backlash with a tweet:

You do you, Mariah.
