Mariah Carey is the First Artist to Score a No. 1 in Four Different Decades

All I Want For Christmas is You

Christmas may be over but Mariah Carey is still celebrating. The elusive chanteuse has become the first artist to score a number one on the Billboard charts in four decades, thanks to her holiday hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

The news was announced by Billboard in a tweet, saying, “@MariahCarey‘s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is officially No. 1 on the #Hot100 for a third week. As this is the first chart of the 2020s, she becomes the first artist in history to rule the chart in four separate decades: 1990s, 2000s, 2010s & 2020s.

Just last month, Mariah released a music video for the song, adding more views and keeping it on top of the streaming charts for four more weeks.

The Billboard Hot 100 ranks songs based on radio airplay, sales, and streaming data.

Other artists have topped the charts in three decades. These include Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Madonna, and Usher.

The song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was first released in 1994 as the lead single to Mariah’s first holiday album, Merry Christmas. Since then, it has been played all over the world, with the New Yorker calling it “one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon.” As of 2017, Carey has earned $60 million just through royalties.
