Manila to Phase Out Gas-Powered Trikes and ‘Kuligligs’

Tricycle Driver Who Was Left By His Wife.... Wins the P59 Million Lotto Jackpot

The local government of Manila City aims to phase out all gas-powered tricycles, pedicabs, and “kuligligs” starting next month, and replace them with electronic tricycles (e-trikes).

This announcement is from Mayor Joseph Estrada via report from philstar.com.

Apparently, the objective is to transform the city into the “country’s electronic tricycle or e-trike capital.”

According to Mayor Estrada, there are currently over 25,000 gas-powered tricycles, pedicabs, and “kuligligs” in the city with no franchise.

The local government has an initial budget of P120 million to purchase 10,000 seven-seater e-trikes. The e-trikes will be distributed to qualified tricycle drivers who will be affected of the phasing out of gas-powered tricycles, pedicabs, and “kuligligs”. The drivers will also receive a uniform in orange color.

Mayor Estrada said that Binondo will be the testing ground for the e-trikes. There will be two charging stations, on either end of each e-trike route.

The e-trike can travel up to 80 kilometers on a single charge. It can get fully charged in four hours.

Afterwards, the local government is also considering putting e-trike routes in Intramuros and Malate.

What do you think of phasing out gas-powered tricycles, pedicabs, and “kuligligs” and replacing them with e-trikes? Yay or nay?
