Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc (GK) continues to heed the call to alleviate poverty with the Bayani Challenge, its yearly summer event providing volunteer opportunities to build or repaint homes, refurbish schools, tell stories and feed children, conduct a sports clinic or youth summit, take part in a health mission, participate in a dam clean-up, and care for environment. All of this is done while allowing the participants to immerse in the beautiful and diverse local cultures that make the Philippines the country that it is.
Poverty is a real problem and one often hears stories of parents who resort to crime to feed their families or children who walk to school for hours on an empty stomach. The call to end poverty is as strong as ever. GK has heard this call and has made it its mission to help end poverty for 5 million families by 2024 but it cannot do it alone.
Ending poverty requires sustainable transformation, which can only be accomplished over time and by many people joining hands in a true spirit of cooperation, collaboration, and citizenship. Everyone has to work together to nurture the culture of sharing and caring for others and joining the Bayani Challenge is one way for Filipinos to do just that.
