This year’s nomination announcement has also met a drastic change; from a live telecast of the revelation, The Academy has decided to use the digital platform where a pre-recorded video was shown through a global live stream on The Academy’s website and Facebook page.

The nominees were announced by Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, joined by Oscar®-winning and nominated Academy members Demian Bichir, Dustin Lance Black, Glenn Close, Guillermo del Toro, Marcia Gay Harden, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Jason Reitman, Gabourey Sidibe and Ken Watanabe.

As predicted, La La Land grabs 14 nominations, which include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Story, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Lead Actor for Ryan Gosling, and Best Lead Actress for Emma Stone. The film’s song, Audition (The Fools who Dream) and City of Stars were both nominated for the Best Original Song category.

After two years of controversy with #OscarsSoWhite nominations, this year’s four major categories including Achievement in Directing for Barry Jenkins, have at least one person of color. It is also worth noting that three of the contenders for Best Picture: MoonlightHidden Figuresand Fences feature mostly black actors. Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Ruth Negga and Mahershala Ali were all nominated for their acting roles.

For the 20th time, Meryl Streep is nominated for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins. Making a comeback is Mel Gibson, who is nominated for Best Director for his film Hacksaw Ridge. Surprisingly, this year’s list has few snubs: Amy Adams for Arrival, Taraji P. Henson for Hidden Figures, Annette Bening for 20th Century Women, Tom Hanks for Sully, Denzel Washington for his directorial stint in Fences, and Finding Dory nominations in Best Animated Feature category.
