Darna is one of Philippine entertainment’s icons. Created by Mars Ravelo in 1947, we have seen various iterations of her in film and TV, from Gina Pareno to Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Rio Locsin, Sharon Cuneta, Regine Velasquez, Angel Locsin, Katrina Halili, Marian Rivera, Angel Aquino, Nadine Lustre, and Toni Gonzaga.
In last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival, a trailer for the reboot of Darna showed in cinemas, but it wasn’t revealed who will play the superheroine. But the trailer got buzz for its special effects, which many likened to a Hollywood production. The next adaptation will be directed by Erik Matti, who directed Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles, On the Job, and the controversial MMFF entry Honor Thy Father.
Yesterday, actress Jessy Mendiola posted photos on Instagram with her wearing the Darna costume. Could she be the next Darna?
Unfortunately, she won’t. She only wore the costume for a skit in Banana Sundae.
