University Graduation

A lot of important events and occasions have been canceled due to the coronavirus or COVID-19. One of the most important is the school graduation. For this Japanese university, they’ve found a workaround where students can still experience the joy of the ceremony… from home.

The Business Breakthrough University / Graduate School (BBT University) decided to push through with their graduation even with the threat of COVID-19 by using the power of technology and robots.

In a statement, BBT University said that they “held a completely online graduation ceremony. In this initiative, students will be able to operate an avatar robot as their own from a remote location and receive an opportunity to receive a diploma from President Omae Kenichi.”

It added, “At the ceremony, four graduates (two undergraduates and two graduate schools) operated “newme” from home [while] other graduates watched online through ZOOM. “Newme” has a tablet as a “face” and moves with four-wheeled “legs.” When the moderator called the name [of the graduate], a “newme” wearing a graduation gown and hat from BBT University with the face of the graduate” received the diploma from the president.
