Look at How Much Barbie Has Changed Through the Years!

Most little girls grow up with Barbie. I remember the first time I held one when I was about 5 years old and the awe I felt at having my very own perfect doll to dress up and play make-believe with. I eventually grew an amazing collection of different Barbie dolls with different hair colours and I even had a dune buggy and a Barbie dream house and several Kens for them to choose from).

What you might not know is that Barbie made its debut on this very day (March 9) at the American International Toy Fair in New York in 1959. Ever since, Barbie has surprised the toy market and girls-turned-women like me with the way she has evolved through the years.

Back when I was a kid, Barbie dolls came with different hair colors, but most of the changes happened in their clothes. Nowadays, there are all sorts of inspiring Barbie dolls for my daughter to choose from, including Barbie Career Dolls that aim to inspire young girls to dream and imagine endless possibilities when they play with Barbie.

LOOK Barbie is Now a Game Developer

Barbie as a Game Developer

Barbie Career dolls include plenty of careers that young girls can choose from depending on who they want to be: a figure skater, a rockstar, a pet veterinarian, a farmer, a nurse, a game developer and many more. This particular collection is just one out of the many collections Barbie that has released so far in line with their You Can Be Anything global campaign that focuses on how a girl’s playtime with Barbie enables and encourages her to imagine everything she can become.

Despite being a leader in the toy industry, though, Barbie has faced several criticisms. What I love the most about her (yes, I talk about her as if she is a real person because that is exactly what she was to me when I was a child) is that she has managed to keep her grace and poise through the years. Trying to beat both the demand of the market and the demand of time, Barbie has built an empire of dolls that comes in different body types, hair color and race.

Last year, Barbie launched the expansion of her Fashionistas line to include 3 new body types: tall, curvy and petite (including the “original version”), 7 skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles. The Barbie Fashionistas aim to empower women that beauty isn’t always about a foolproof body, a pointed nose, blonde hair and small waistline; but is about loving your own and simply what makes you, you. JUST LOOK AT HOW BEAUTIFUL THEY ARE:

It’s not always the definition behind the word perfection. Beauty can simply just be about accepting and embracing everything about yourself. I love this vision and goal of the company to empower women and inspire them to keep dreaming the impossible. I actually went through a shelf of Barbie Fashionistas and found one that looked so much like me, I ended up buying it. It’s not about second childhood or anything. It just made me nostalgic and made me feel really good about myself, like, “Oh, look. I am a Barbie doll now, too.”
