This ‘senior’ student definitely reached a milestone of graduating from junior high school at a ripe age of seventy nine!

Dariecyl Dionisio, a tenth grader from Fort Bonifacio High School, expressed noble respect for fellow batchmate Salvacion F. Nacario who marched along with Class of 2017 in this school year’s commencement exercises for junior high school students. WHEN IN MANILA has reached out to Dariecyl for further details.

“She inspires us [’cause] at her age she doesn’t give up in achieving her dreams.
Minsan lang namin siya makita e. And yung apo niya ang naghahatid sa kanya sa school. May mga friends din si nanay sa school. (We see her only sometimes. Her grandchild is the one bringing her to school. Nanay also has friends in school.)
Lola Sali and AdviserThe graduate and her class adviser
Nanay Sally was a first a four-year-old girl who fought to make it through the Second World War alive. Her father was a member of the Philippine Constabulary, which made her family a target of the Japanese. She lost eight of her fifteen siblings in the war. Due to the nature of their father’s job, the Nacarios would often move from one place to another. Nanay Sally finished fifth grade in Iloilo and graduated from elementary in Camarines Sur. After sixth grade, they moved to Manila where Nanay Sally enrolled in a military school. She soon fell in love with one of her classmates. She dropped out in her second year because she got married. Even though she wanted to continue her studies, she had children one from another.
“In spite of her old age, Nanay Sally enrolled in an Alternative Learning System (ALS) using the little money her husband left in his pension to pay for her tuition and allowance. Even if she’s old, she is interested and wanted to learn more. Her decision to continue her studies was initially met her resistance from her children. They didn’t want her to go back to school, but Nanay Sally insisted. She admitted that her children wanted her to stay simply at home and rest, but she believes that it is better to get tired from studying than from merely doing house chores. Though she sometimes had to battle the heat and experience difficulty reading small letters, she never gave up. Her curiosity and passion for learning fueled her. She wanted to know what was happening in the world, she’s fond of reading the newspaper. Nanay Sally studied in the ALS for three years and moved to the Fort Bonifacio Open High School on her final year in high school, where she attended classes once a week.”
Dariecyl closes, “Without any signs of slowing down, she plans to continue her studies. She insist on taking up Grade 11 next school year and also wants to go to college.”
Truly Nanay (Mother) Sally remains as an inspiration to every one of us!
