Lin-Manuel Miranda to Write Songs For Live-Action “The Little Mermaid”!

10 Disney Cartoons That Are Going to Have a Live Action Adaptation 6

One of the most beloved Disney animated features is The Little Mermaid, based on the fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen. In the Disney version, young Ariel gives up her fins to be with Eric, a handsome prince. Disney is soon to breathe new life into the timeless story as a live-action adaption has been announced, and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will be writing the music!

Miranda will be joining Alan Menken, the composer who wrote the 1989 film’s music, for additional songs that will be used in the live-action adaptation.

It’s worth noting that Miranda’s love for musical theater began with The Little Mermaid, so joining this project is like coming full circle. Did we mention that his son is named Sebastian…?

Disney has fully embraced Miranda because apart from this gig, he wrote the music for last year’s Moana and he is part of the cast of Mary Poppins Returns.

There’s no word yet who will play the role of Ariel.

The Little Mermaid was released in 1989 to critical acclaim, marking the beginning of what is called the Disney Renaissance, which includes the films The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, and Tarzan. The Little Mermaid won two Academy Awards the year it was released: Best Score and Best Original Song for “Under the Sea.”
