In the recent years, the Department of Education introduced the new K-to-12 curriculum into the Philippine education system. The new curriculum includes a year in Kindergarten, 6 years at the Elementary level, 4 years of Junior High School and 2 years of Senior High School. Being among the three countries left with the 10-year basic education curriculum in the last decade, the new educational system is expected to open more opportunities for students such as the ability to work after graduating high school!

There are so many specializations (also known as strands) that each student can pick before he/she can embark on the Senior high-coaster. But what if you can’t still decide which one to pick? If you are, well here are some tips from someone who has been in the SHS scene!

5. Consider your passion in life!

As described by the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, “passion is an object of desire or deep interest.” I always believe in the saying that if you aren’t passionate about what you’re doing, it would reflect on your work. When choosing things like your strand, always take into account what your heart is screaming for. Also, be realistic if you really love what you do. Consider your hobbies, skills, and talents!

4. Think about the job opportunities in that field!

After graduating from school, every student aims to get a decent job where they can earn and start a living. As early as Junior High School (JHS), one must be oriented already with the possible job opportunities available in any field he/she is interested in. Another crucial thing is, knowing the strand and the qualities that a person must have related to one’s dream job. If you’ll be knowledgeable about these important information before you even start Senior High, I am certain that you’ll become even more prepared!

3. Ask yourself what your goal in life is.

To find the goal in life that would make us genuinely happy can take some time, but it is surely worth it in the end. As long as you listen to what your heart is saying, there is no doubt that you’ll find it eventually. You can try keeping yourself surrounded by things that inspire you to go forward and be the best version of yourself!

2. Know the strand more through research

Research plays a huge role in the improvement of our society. This activity enables us to engage ourselves in new knowledge and find answers to the questions that boggle us. Try to do your own research by reading the strand descriptions in various school and government websites. Through this, you are able to get a glimpse of what to expect in the program that is being offered! Also, you may try looking for the courses that are offered in the strand and their descriptions. Not only are you getting a glimpse of what to expect, but also you are able to identify if you’d enjoy studying them!

1. Get advice from your seniors!

“Experience is life’s best teacher”

Being someone who was part of the pioneer batch of Senior High School students, I believe that we are among the best people to get advice from. We have seen and experienced the program well before the young ones did. Try to get pieces of advice from the Senior High students you’ll encounter and ask about their experiences. They might even teach you the hacks on how to pass your courses! And as you listen to them, take into heart their experience and use it to become a better version of yourself once you enter Senior High.
