Jamike Jarin’s unforeseen transfer to National University led to many speculations on why he decided to abruptly leave San Beda just a few months after bringing back the NCAA title to Mendiola.
For Jarin, it’s simple — the competitor in him just can’t say no to another challenge.
“The truth to the matter is, it was an opportunity that presented itself. I like challenges,” Jarin said, finally talking about his move after staying mum for weeks.
“San Beda naman (is) losing only Dan Sara so I felt that I will be leaving San Beda na very competitive. It’s a dream also to coach in the UAAP, ‘yun ang one of the biggest reasons. Basically, it’s just a new challenge,” he added.
The head coach position of the Bulldogs was left vacant after longtime coach Eric Altamirano resigned from his post just two years after ending the school’s 60-year futility.
Jarin reiterated that he just merely pounced on the opportunity presented to him by the management of the NU basketball team, coaching such a high profile team in yet another uncharted territory for him – coaching a UAAP college team.
“I did not look for it. It just happened. It’s another challenge. I’m a competitor kasi so I’d like to see myself in a new situation, in a new environment,” he continued.
“They (NU) had names in mind and I was one of them. ‘E nandoon na. It was hard to make the decision, but the opportunity presented itself,” he added.
Jarin will be tapping the services of National University great and two-time PBA Most Valuable Player Danny Ildefonso as an assistant coach. Completing Jarin’s supporting cast are John Ferriols, Dennis Llames, Ricky Reyes and another former Bulldog in Cedric Labing-isa. Jeff Napa, a guy who rivaled Jarin in the NCAA as Letran’s head coach, will also be playing a role with the team.
“Okay naman (the reception of the team). Most of them, I competed against, some of them, I coached so let’s see. Alam naman nila how I run things. I’m excited, I’m sure they’re excited also,” Jarin said who didn’t promise anything grand, but vowed that they’re gonna bring their best night in and night out.
“Of course, we’d like to return to Final Four. From there, we’ll see. No false promises. Only thing I can promise is we’re gonna come prepared.”
