Is She the Next Disney Princess Hint She's Polynesian

Disney has influenced millions of children through its inspirational films that highlighted good over evil, the power of hard work, and the importance of faith and hope. If you’ve seen recent Disney movies, they’re less about waiting for Prince Charming and more about doing things your own way. One of Disney’s mot popular franchises is the Disney Princesses, and you can see how they have grown with the times. Hello, Mulan, Tiana, and Merida?

Following the footsteps of these modern princesses is Moana, the rumored next princess. She hasn’t been named as an official Princess, but media has reported that she is. Disney announced Moana’s film of the same name at the D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, where they announced Disney’s upcoming films.

Moana follows a young Polynesian teenager who goes out on a daring mission to relive her ancestors’ voyages around the South Pacific to discover islands in Oceania. During her trip, she meets the demi-god Maui and they travel together to finish her ancestors’ unfinished quest.

Moana is directed by The Little Mermaid and The Princess and the Frog directors Jon Clements and John Musker. Dwayne Johnson was announced as the voice of Maui (Johnson is Samoan), but there is still no word who will voice the possible Princess.

Under the Disney Princesses canon, the official princesses are  Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), Cinderella (Cinderella), Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Ariel (The Little Mermaid), Belle (Beauty and the Beast), Jasmine (Aladdin), Pocahontas (Pocahontas), Mulan (Mulan), Tiana (The Princess and the Frog), Rapunzel (Tangled), and Merida (Brave).

The film is set to be released in late 2016.
