Big Little Lies was a quiet yet elegant show on HBO that followed a group of rich, beautiful women living in a coastal town. The show starts with a murder, but it’s never revealed who (or why) until the last episode. Many wondered if there would be a second season since the mystery was already “solved,” but there might be a follow up.
The show is based on a novel of the same name and starred an ensemble cast featuring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard, Adam Scott, Zoe Kravitz, and Laura Dern.
The book’s author, Liane Moriarty, revealed that producers have asked her if she can develop new ideas for a potential season two. However, she told Sydney Morning Herald that she’s not interested in writing a second novel, and would only do so for television.
She said, “I’m absolutely open to it because, once I started thinking, it was too much fun to see what I could do and to see these characters again. And there’s definitely places you can go … I think everybody is pretty keen.
They all loved working together but I think the thing is the story has to be right. So if it’s right, and if [creator] David E. Kelley is happy to get the screenplay right, then I think that’ll do it.”
When asked what plot points the second season could touch on, Moriarty said that it could focus on stories relating to Bonnie, the second wife of lead Mackenzie’s ex-husband, or Celeste, one of the leads who goes through an abusive marriage.
Of course, this doesn’t automatically mean a green light from HBO. According to HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys, “First we have to see the material and see if it’s worth everyone’s time. And if it is, [we’ll have a] conversation about directors.”
In the past, season one director Jean-Marc Vallée said that he wouldn’t join a second season, but he said that Witherspoon and Kidman can be very persuasive.
Big Little Lies has received praise from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes saying, “Bitingly funny and highly addictive, Big Little Lies is a twisty, thrilling, enlightening ride led by a first-rate cast.”
