Is Baguio City Reopening The Loakan Airport To Commercial Flights?

Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong is currently gunning to reopen the Loakan Airport in a bid to strengthen the city’s tourism industry. His efforts are done in partnership with San Miguel Corporation (SMC), who would be conducting operations alongside the city government. According to PhilStar, this has been a long-standing ambition of Magalong in order to improve the city.

However, the Loakan Airport was initially closed down to the public due to the difficulty of landing planes there. While it has remained open to chartered and military flights, the weather has generally been deemed too dangerous an element for commercial use.  Yet the city government believes that an upgrade in facilities and operations ought to make the airport usable.

Magalong disclosed that Cebu Pacific has declared its intention of opening a Cebu-Baguio-Cebu route, while PAL Express has already purchased 5 airplanes that would be able to fly in and out of the Loakan airport. This is also being pushed in the interest of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who shared with Magalong their desire for direct flights from Mindanao and Visayas. They, like everyone else, would prefer to skip the heavy Metro Manila traffic.
