I’ve seen every single movie in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series. In fact, I loved the first two movies so much, I watched them over and over again… but of course, I was much younger then and the movies appealed to me because Orlando Bloom was such a cutie. By the time the fourth movie came out, I already had a one-year-old daughter and was so sick and tired of seeing the same acting from Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, I was glad that it felt like they had put the series to rest.
It turns out that they didn’t, though; and when our block screening for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge’ came, I wasn’t exactly jumping up and down for it. By the time it started, though, I found myself laughing every now and then – not because the movie was drop-dead funny, but because I started to realize how much I could actually relate to Jack Sparrow now that I’m older and have more experience in the world of alcohol and drunkenness. It may sound silly, but it actually made Jack Sparrow much more relatable.
When he woke up in the vault of the bank and thought, “What am I doing here?”, I remembered the very few times when I woke up somewhere and had no idea what I was doing there. The same goes for when the woman wakes up in the vault and Jack has that, “WHO IS THAT?” look on his face. Kidding. But I’m sure a lot of other people might have found that relatable.
By the time Jack and his crew start running away with the bank, I whispered to my seatmate, “Well, that escalated quickly!” and as if he heard me, Jack took another swig of rum. Isn’t that what we would do in stressful situations? Just drink – eft it! There are many moments in ‘Salazar’s Revenge’ – and in the rest of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies, really, where Jack has acted like every single one of us whilst drunk.
