“I, Tonya” is a Dark Comedy Biopic About a Disgraced Ice Skater

I Tonya

One of the movies we’re excited to catch is I, Tonya, a dark comedy biopic about the rise and fall of ice skater Tonya Harding. The best thing about it? It’s based on a true story.

Watch the trailer below:

I, Tonya tells the story of Harding, an Olympic figure skater who becomes the first woman to complete a triple axel in competition. However, that monumental achievement was overshadowed by her involvement in an attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan.

Harding is played by Margot Robbie, who successfully channels Harding’s many quirks. In the trailer, the ice skater is berated by a judge because they “also judge on presentation,” to which she responds, “suck my #$%^.”

Interestingly, Robbie met the real-life Harding. She told Jake Gyllenhaal in Variety‘s Actors on Actors series, “Something [Tonya] asked me about when we met, she said, ‘How are you dealing with fame and being famous?’And actually, it was very kind of her to ask. Because to be honest, her situation was horrible, and it happened to her so young, and I think what made the biggest difference in the world was she didn’t have a support network around her. And I do, and I’m so lucky.”

Robbie stars in I, Tonya with Sebastian Stan, Paul Walter Hauser, Julianne Nicholson, Bobby Cannavale, and Mckenna Grace.

The film will premiere on December 8.
