After a 21-year absence, Harvard’s largest student conference in the Asia-Pacific is back in Manila!
The De La Salle Project of Asian and International Relations (DLSPAIR) will kick off the 2015 Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) – Asia conference at the Makati Shangri-la Hotel this August 20, 21 years after the Harvard conference was hosted in Manila. This year’s Manila conference will have the theme “Confronting Asia’s Development Challenges through Innovation”.
Since 1991, the HPAIR has been hosting one of Asia and the world’s largest and most prestigious student conferences. Aside from an annual conference held in Harvard University, Boston, HPAIR 2015 also holds an Asia conference every year with 500 delegates from around the world. The Asia Conference has been hosted in various leading universities in top Asian cities such as the National Chengchi University in Taipei; the American University in Dubai; and most recently, Keio University in Tokyo.
De La Salle University – Manila, this year’s university host in Asia, was chosen to be the partner university through a competitive bidding process. “We wanted to redefine HPAIR’s standards and bring the conference closer to the issues and problems discussed throughout the conference, such as those issues being experienced in the Philippines”, according to Jonathan Beltran, Executive Director of the Host Country Organizing Committee of HPAIR (DLSPAIR).
In 1994, the conference was also hosted in the Philippines with the theme “Economic Cooperation for the Pacific Century”. Fun fact: the 1994 HPAIR Conference was also held in the same venue they have unknowingly reserved for this year’s conference—The Makati Shangri-la!
The 5-day conference will have seven panels: Corporate Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Finance and the World Economy, Security & Diplomacy, Health and Social Policy, Energy and Sustainability & Human Rights.
Fun events also await the participants such as International Night, Manila Night, Entertainment Night, and field trips and mixers for delegates and speakers!
