According to BIR the cash prize and other awards Pia received for winning the Miss Universe title are subject to income tax. In fact, top revenue officials reiterated that as a Filipino citizen, Pia’s earnings from within and outside the Philippines must be taxable and subject to the maximum rate of 32 percent.

However, due to the approval of the Bill authored by CDO Representative Rufus Rodrigues, Pia is now exempted from tax. Furthermore, Pia also explained that $300,000-crown was only loaned to her, she shouldn’t be taxed for it.

Pia gets a year-long salary (as Miss Universe) and luxurious accommodations with living expenses in a New York apartment during her reign.

The Congressman explained that the tax exemption could be a nice gesture for recognizing her effort to break the 42-year drought.

Well, thank you for being persistent and hopefully the House Bill will also support our athletes and other Filipinos who will bring honor and pride to our country.
