On this day in 1986, the Philippines held a snap election, called by then current president Ferdinand Marcos. At the end of the polls, the country’s Commission on Election declared Marcos the victor, but election watchdog NAMFREL (National Citizen’s Movement for Free Elections) said it was Corazon Aquino who won. The announcement of Marcos’ win became one of the turning points in PH history, as the People Powerful Revolution ended the Marcos regime two weeks later.
