We’ve seen a lot of Jokers in history: there’s Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto. There’ll be a new Joker and he’ll be played by Joaquin Phoenix, and we got to see our first batch of photos of the actor in the role in a biopic called Joker.

The first photo is of the actor, posted by director Todd Phillips on Instagram. The photo is captioned “Arthur,” which is most likely Phoenix’s name before the transformation.
The following images are of Arthur, a standup comedian, who confronts a clown in the street and punches him on the nose.
Phoenix’s Joker will be set outside the DC Extended Universe and will have no effect on Leto’s future appearances as the Joker. He will star with Robert de Niro as a talk show host, Deadpool‘s Zazie Beetz, and there are rumors that American Horror Story‘s Frances Conroy will join as the Joker’s mother.
Phillips mentioned that Joker will be different from the other films. We’re excited for it to come out on October 4, 2019!
