Here Are the Things You Cannot Do Today on Rizal Day

For many Filipinos, Rizal Day is seen only as an extra day for the extended holiday vacation. Worse, some even think that it’s our national hero’s birthday (Seriously, check the Twitter hashtag)! For those not in the know, Rizal Day commemorates the day Jose Rizal was executed in Bagumbayan, now known as Rizal Park. In fact, his death was one of the catalysts of Philippine independence. So really, we have him to thank for the freedom we now have.

To properly celebrate Rizal Day, Republic Act No. 229 has a list of things you can’t do on Rizal Day. These include: cockfighting, horse racing, and jai alai. The Republic Act does not explain why these acts are not allowed, but it’s probably because these activities encourage betting.

Besides that, the Philippine flag must also be flown half-mast in public places.

Violating these rules means a fine of up to P200 or jail time of up to six months. If you are a city mayor, you may even be suspended from your position. You have been warned.
