Hack UP Participants Attend 1-Day Pre-Hackathon Training

MAKATI, PHILIPPINES – Representatives from the official participating teams of Hack UP attended a one-day pre-event training organized by UP Center for Student Innovations (UP CSI), UP Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development (UP OVCRD) and 8Layer Technologies Inc. which was held at Globelabs Valero on September 19.

Hack UP is an intercollegiate hackathon where 31 teams from 12 different universities in the National Capital Region are expected to create innovations for the nation within 24-hours of coding software or hardware applications which they will then pitch to the panel of judges coming from different private industries and government agencies in the country.

The training was composed of different topics specially prepared to gear the participants with the proper knowledge and skills in idea generation, APIs, other software development tools, and pitching which will be essential for the Hack UP proper.

Mr. Neil Francis Calabroso, a software engineer from Freelancer.com and former Development Head of UP CSI started the training by giving a hackathon for dummies and idea generation talk that gave the attendees an overview on what to expect during a hackathon.

An idea pitching talk by Mr. Sony Valdez, president of Python PH, came next where he gave general tips and techniques for pitching an idea. It was then followed by a special topic on bringing native applications to the web conducted by Mr. Russell Gutierrez of Pouch Nation which gave the participants an idea on how to revive old applications through adapting the current existing technology.

The Ionic Framework, a full-stack service platform for building and scaling mobile applications applications with HTML5 and other web technologies like AngularJS, was introduced by Mr. Miguel Cabral and Mr. Melchor Abcede from 8Layer Technologies Inc.

Mr. Joshua Frankie Rayo, former Vice-President for Innovations of UP CSI introduced the use of HERE Maps API through a hands-on lecture that he conducted. Another hands-on and demo lecture on the use of redis as database, cache and message broker was given by Mr. Joniel Ibasco of Altitude Games.

Mr. Cjay Billones, president of UP CSI and Hack UP Project Director, gave a lecture and demonstration on the use of git as a version control system which will be very useful for team collaboration in developing software projects.

Lastly, Ms. Erika Gatmaitan from Globelabs introduced the different APIs of Globe which can also be used by the participants in their software projects.

The participants from the different teams were then shuffled and grouped for the special activity prepared wherein each group was asked to generate and pitch a random idea from the combination of the two words that they will see from a word hunt puzzle flashed on the screen.

After the pitching of their ideas, they received helpful feedbacks and more pitching tips and techniques from the guest judge, Mr. Errole Gutierrez of Dalluyon Active Lifestyle Inc.

Hack UP will be held at the GT-Toyota Asian Cultural Center Auditorium and School of Economics Auditorium in UP Diliman on September 26-27.
