Filipina Domestic Helper in HK Wins Scholarship to New York University
There are many stories of our countrymen sacrificing their dreams and going abroad to support their family. They’re our modern heroes, because many of them put their lives on hold just to make sure their family gets what they need. But that’s not the case with Xyza Cruz Bacani. She does an excellent job as a domestic helper in Hong Kong (she took over her mother’s position in the household, and she is loved by the kids she is taking care of), and she has the time to establish herself as a street photographer, landing features on The New York Times and Vogue Italia, holding talks at the Senate sponsored by Sen. Sonny Angara, and exhibiting of her work.
Now, Bacani has been granted a 2015 Human Rights Fellowship by the Magnum Foundation, where will be able to study at New York University for six weeks.
The purpose of the fellowship is to allow recipients to create “effective visual stories with the aim of advancing human rights” in her home country. Bacani was awarded the fellowship for her photos taken at a women’s shelter for abused domestic helpers.
