When In Manila, online shops have not only invaded Facebook, but Instagram as well! I’m an Instagram addict and I confess that I really browse through it a lot! Thanks to that browsing habit of mine, I bumped into the classy, fashionable and functional La Bolsa Bags by Michelle Go.

La Bolsa Bags: La Bolsa Cez @ P950.00 (comes in 3 pieces)

La Bolsa Bags by Michelle

Started last year, La Bolsa by Michelle has quickly invaded Instagram. With over 17 thousand followers on Instagram, surely she has caught customers attention in and out of the country! Not to mention, these bags are 100% Filipino made!

La Bolsa Cez Bag in Teal Color

The first time I saw La Bolsa bags on Instagram, I was hooked to it and viewed it everyday. I find La Bolsa Bags classy and elegant at reasonable prices. And so I messaged Michelle, and true enough, she was so accommodating and replies fast to her customers. I was almost sure that I wanted a La Bolsa Bag. But of course, I won’t be convinced if I don’t see the bags live and so I went to one of their bazaars and found out how friendly and welcoming her staff are. Not only that, the styles are indeed classy, durable and really affordable for its quality.

I love how La Bolsa Bags come in different colors and styles! Surely you will find that perfect piece for you. As for me, I am settled with my teal colored La Bolsa Cez that I bring to work everyday. It’s been 3 months, still, my bag looks like the first time I got hold of it! Really durable!

La Bolsa Queenie in Beige @ P800.00

Truly, La Bolsa Bags by Michelle Go has proven the credibility of the product! Fashionable and elegant that even celebrities like Sunshine Cruz, Lorna Tolentino, Aubrey Miles, Bong Revilla Jr., Say Alonzo, Gladys Reyes and a lot more have been using La Bolsa Bags too!

LEE MIN HO: MY EVERYTHING – WORLD TOUR 2013 COMING TO MANILA!

Good News – Korean superstar Lee Min Ho is coming back and will be bringing his first-ever concert tour to Manila, “My Everything – World Tour 2013” on Saturday, July 6 at the Mall of Asia Arena. The concert tour will be a 10-city tour that will also include stops in Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Osaka, Hong Kong and the United States. And with the release of Lee Min Ho’s first album entitled “My Everything”, this will be his way of thanking his supportive fans around the world.

Lee Min Ho is arguably one of the most sought after and recognized Korean actors today. Still in his 20s, Min Ho has already claimed a comfortable seat in the international stardom. Min Ho’s acting career began in 2005 with small roles in several dramas, but his first big career break came when he took the lead role as Gu Jun Pyo in “Boys Over Flowers”.

Despite pessimistic claims from critics that Lee Min Ho’s massive popularity would die down after the Boys Over Flowers craze, the talented actor has proven to be a no one-hit wonder. He continued to star in several blockbuster dramas, including “Personal Taste” (renamed “Perfect Match” in the Philippines) and the action drama “City Hunter”. Lee Min Ho is also one of BENCH clothing’s international endorsers.

Catch the Korean heartthrob in his first-ever live concert, as he serenades songs from his new album, answer questions and celebrate the night with his well-loved fans. Tickets to Lee Min Ho’s “My Everything – World Tour 2013” in Manila are available at all SM Tickets outlets or visit www.smtickets.com.

When In Manila, accessories are simple add-ons which can significantly emphasize and complete a look. However, many individuals don’t realize the power of well-made earrings, belts and necklace to make a fashion statement. Most will purchase accessories from tiangges, sacrificing design and craftsmanship for affordability. Last June 13, 2013 in an intimate accessories exhibition at the The Podium, famous Filipino designers such as Maco Custodio, Ken Samudio and Natalya Lagdameo showcased their accessories collections which are definitely far-flung from the usual tiangge bought jewelries.

There are a total of six designers in the exhibition. This includes Joel Escober, Oj Hofer, Joyce Makitalo, Ken Samudio, Natalya Lagdameo, and Maco Custodio. Unfortunately, three of them – Escober, Hofer, and Makitalo were unable to attend the event. But, the sight of their creations was able to satisfy their unavailability.

Intricate pieces from Joel Escober

Joel Esbober is known for creating elegant wedding dresses that every Filipina bride dreams of. His accessory collection highlighted his love for intricate details. From the necklace to belts, Escober has beautifully designed his masterpieces to be attention grabbers even when viewed from afar. He used stones in different colors and cuts to achieve high-class elegance – perfect for the modern Filipina.

Leather with Maco Custodio

Maco’s collection is simple yet creative in many ways. His featured designs are not geared towards jewelries, but instead on accessories such as bags and shoes. He used only one color motif which is brown to make his creations cohesive. When asked what his inspiration for the designs, he said his collections were from his previous designs, but he made changes for the exhibition.

Oj Hofer’s bead designs

As for Oj Hofer’s collection, he mainly used beans combined with metal chains and chords. He used earth tone palette matched with bright hues to make the craftsmanship stand-out. The most-striking creation is the bangle and clutch which features light blue snake skin and abacca texture.

Gold and pearl from Natalya Lagdameo

Natalya Lagdameo featured what she does best – jewelries made from gold. Her pieces display simplicity with sense of elegance. Moreover, she beautifully crafted mother of pearl into her masterpieces.

Ken Samudio

Ken Samudio’s works are made from glass and beads paired with metal chains and thread. The jewelries’ design is geared towards traditional tribal accessory mixed glam. He calls his collection “tribal glam.”

Eye-catching pieces from Joyce Makitalo

The last designer included in the exhibition is Joyce Makitalo. Her jewelry creations are simple, but don’t lack unique craftsmanship. One of the attention-grabbing pieces is the necklaces with eye pendants. The cocktail rings are also well-made.

Accessories are important addition to any wardrobe, but don’t settle for less. So When In Manila, consider local designers’ creations for your next bag, shoes and jewelries.

When In Manila, with a couple of eventful months in tow, it is not unlikely for summer season to just pass me by I can almost cry… Although I am not complaining, and perhaps because I did not complain, fate granted me my unspoken wish by receiving an invite from our Managing Editor for a weekend staycation at OASIS PACO PARK HOTEL…

Still trying to absorb the wonderful experience I have had a day before for an overnight stay at a five star hotel in Taguig, now I’d be spending my weekend at Oasis Paco Park Hotel, in the heart of Manila or Maynila (which is different from Metro Manila, by the way). Immediately, I figured a compass would be handy.

Image from Google Map

Born in Kyusi (Quezon City), raised in Los Banos and went back to Quezon City during my adolescent years, trying to locate an address in “Maynila” is sort of going to an expedition. An egghunt!

Oasis Paco Park Hotel, known as the original boutique hotel for over 20 years and formerly referred to as Paco Park Hotel, with all the renovation it received since the early quarter of the previous year, is able to maintain the “reminds-me-of-Old-Manila” feel.

Able to find my way, a security officer gave me a slight nod. What a relief…Mang Dador, had a ready smile as he gestured me to the front desk. As soon as the two ladies stood up from behind the desk and gave me a very warm welcome, I, in turn, saw Mae Ilagan who asked me to check out the room assigned to us after some introduction as she was speaking to the hotel’s Room Manager Division, Miss Pauline when I popped in.

Combining antique and modern interiors, Oasis Paco Park Hotel has a capacity of 50 rooms that range from Php 2,000.00 to Php 6,500.00, from Economy Rooms to Family Rooms, and that of Hotel Suite, depending on your need and the hotel’s rules/conditions such are, standard check-in time is 2:00pm and check-out time is 12 noon and group rates are available upon request.

As for my purpose, I wanted to proceed with little effort. So, instead of grabbing my pen and notebook (old school writing works best for me), I headed for the bed that felt like it held me so tight that when I woke up, from what I thought was just a short slumber, it was already time for dinner!

Extremely large bed in a spacious room!

Such a waste because I also wanted to go for a swim! Right. No swimming pool will ever escape these eyes of mine. To lessen my annoyance of myself, I opted to check the bathroom instead which totally blew away the dark clouds that floated on top of my head because it is so huge!

Reminds me of bathrooms in ancestral houses.

Freshened up, Mae and I were on our feet to go downstairs because there’s where dinner should be served. But first things first… towards the staircase!

Every step down the stairs led to a captivating courtyard surrounded by yellow lights which gave the place a cross between nostalgic and romantic glow that revealed how charming this boutique hotel can be, especially at night…then suddenly, I felt so calm.

DAK MAGNETIC CLOTHING

LAUNCHING from CEBU to Manila

Started in April 2013, Dak Magnetic the brainchild of Chan Quiambao, is a t-shirt brand that is inspired by street-art. Manufactured in the heart of Cebu, each design is an original art piece from a local artist from Mindanao.

Their goal is to make Filipinos (mainly) and also other races appreciate their artistic vision. They want “our kababayans” to buy more the locally made shirts instead of the designer brands. Also, the group wants to make the clothes affordable so that people who can’t afford to buy the expensive brands can enjoy products of the same quality at a much cheaper price. They want to go global so that foreigners will see that Filipinos are very artistic and can compete with the other famous brands.

With the help of ANT Productions for logistics and planning; 121 Bar & Grill for the event venue; media sponsors- WhenInManila.com & WU Manila Magazine, Dak Magnetic’s Clothing Launch here in Manila was made possible.

The event will mainly feature the brand Dak Magnetic but to pull in the crowd, a live graffiti contest was conceptualized. 3 graffiti artists will be painting on plywood boards and selected piece will be turned into a shirt design for Dak Magnetic. A Rasta Theme was developed for this and so a reggae group called Collie Herb will be playing during the night.

When In Manila, traces of Spanish culture will always be immutably ingrained within the city’s rich history. Take a trip back in time through a gastronomical experience with Casa Marcos.

Since 1945, this restobar has been serving Spanish favorites with a local twist. Upon entering their Burgos Circle branch, I was immediately taken in by the classy yet homey ambiance. Artistic memorabilia lined the walls, sealing in the Spanish semblance.

For starters, I had the Gambas (Php 285) and Almejas (Php 230) paired with their complimentary pandesal. The Gambas are Spanish garlic shrimps cooked in a distinct Casa Marcos style, while the Almejas are baked clams topped with melted cheese and crispy garlic bits. Both were old favorites and flavorful.

Casa Marcos‘ pandesal is a unique winner in my book. Cooked fresh using brick oven woodfire daily, their pandesal has a salty, crunchy texture yet is soft as a pillow on the inside. Their pandesal is so delicious, they put up a seperate store within the restaurant called Bread Bag Pandesal Bar, which alone is already worth a visit.

For my main course, I had the Tenderloin Steak ala Pobre (Php 495) and the famous Paella Valenciana (Php 745). The Steak ala Pobre is cooked in oil and garlic, while the Valenciana is a hearty rice meal with chorizo, seafood, and chicken cooked over a slow fire.

My verdict? The Tenderloin was delicious enough but it was the Paella Valenciana that completely blew me away. Having tried a variety of the same dish in different restaurants, Casa Marcos’ version stood out from the rest. The dish was hearty, the meat succulent, and the mixture of flavors simply delicious. Definitely my new go-to haven for Paella!

When In Manila, be sure to drop by Casa Marcos! Here’s a tip: it turns into a bar after sunset with pretty sweet happy hour deals. Trying their famous Sangria next. See you there!

When in Manila and looking for a different kind of weekend getaway, be sure to check out a special Tanay rest house in the folds of Rizal. This destination belongs to none other than former Philippine President Joseph “Erap” Ejercito Estrada and shows just where you’d want to be if ever placed under house arrest. Recently, I got the chance to see the sights and explore the museum of this Tanay rest house.

First, a little history on the country’s most prominent actor-turned-politician. Erap Estrada held office as the 13th President of the Philippines from 1998 up to 2001; this followed a political career that took him from being Mayor to Senator to Vice President and eventually to being one of the most disputed presidents of the country. His term was cut short by the historical EDSA Revolution of 2001 dubbed as EDSA Dos, and he was eventually impeached and placed in house arrest in what he would soon turn into his Tanay rest house and museum.

Following the rising road that led deeper into the 19-hectare property, it wasn’t long before we came upon a house for rent, a public swimming pool, and a small hotel. However, having just come from another Tanay resort ourselves, we weren’t really interested in exploring these places. We were there on a quest to see how a president lives under house arrest, and we pushed on, knowing that there’s more to Erap’s Tanay rest house than that.

When In Manila, one would seldom consider the city of Manila as a haven for the best restaurant. WRONG. People from different corners of the Metro are able to trace and follow the trails that lead to MY KITCHEN where the delicious smell comes from stronger than GPS radio signals.

My Kitchen, ranked as the #1 Restaurant by Tripadvisor, is one of Chef Chris’ project where he freely stretches out his passion for cooking when he became Consultant Executive Chef for Aura Hotels and Resorts. Without having to own the restaurant, Chef Chris Locher’s enthusiasm for cooking with the intention of putting a smile on a customer’s lips is like an unfading fire in his belly.

Over a weekend staycation at the Oasis Paco Park Hotel, Mae Ilagan and I felt privileged to experience being in a haven of deli inside an oasis. It was late in the afternoon when I met Mae at the hotel. Hours after I got arrested by a pile of linen sheets, we headed to My Kitchen for dinner.

Chef Chris, together with a waitstaff, personally helped us to our table. Complimentary starters served immediately. I felt my breath thinning at the sight of pesto drowning in olive oil.

Chef Chris was not mistaken! …With a bowl of Oasis Salad not so far behind.

Formerly, The Original was known as Panizza back when Chef Chris was with C! restaurant which started making waves in Pampanga. But, soon as the ingredients had evolved by adding arugula (leaves) and alfalfa (sprouts), panizza became The Original, simply because “There can only be one!” as Chef Chris puts it where Mae and I would only agree!

Roll it!

Not long before we could roll the remaining slices of The Original, the waitstaff politely excused herself, carefully placing a bowlful of an old family recipe passed on to Chef Chris by his grandmother of Italian descent. With the beef so tender that even toddlers won’t have difficulty chewing… And the cream sauce tasted so rich like I was the one soaked in it, while the saffron risotto was just as flavorful. Osso Buco Maestri smelled so good, it made me numb to fail to realize should I be drooling.

OSSO BUCO MAESTRI
prepared after an old family recipe in lemon and white wine flavored cream sauce with fresh Italian parsley bedded on saffron risotto
Php 980.00/350g
Php 1,400.00/500g

The abundance of cheese, butter and cream sauce in our dinner was perfected by an equally overwhelming dessert which was also favored by Yummy Magazine as Best Dessert in 2012, Triple Chocolate Cake with orange peel braised in brandy, is a creation of Chef Chris’ wife, Chef Cristine or Tinlou.

TRIPLE CHOCOLATE CAKE
The BEST chocolate cake ever served with orange peel braised in brandy and dark Swiss chocolate infused with grand marnier
Php 350.00

Seen how our eyes brightened up at every dish served on our table during dinner, Chef Chris bade goodnight by telling us to be ready for an extravagant lunch on the following day and better if we’d be able to ask help from our friends. On the other hand, I was just glad being the-weekend-side-kick to an expert ‘cause she knew exactly what to do…

There are so many things that you can do WhenInManila. You can go shopping, in-and-out of your favorite stores, trying out a new little black dress, feeling the smooth leather of your future go-to red tote, giving your soon-to-be wedges a test run, dining at a newly opened sushi bar (I love sushi), having a vodka tonic on-the-rocks at your favorite pub (We do not advise drinking and bar hopping for minors.); or better yet, check out a proudly Pinoy brand that is eco-friendly, skin-friendly, wallet-friendly, and all things friendly.

A quick art I made for Human Heart Nature.

Human Heart Nature is a proudly Pinoy brand that has started venturing out internationally. What sets it apart from others is its pro-environment, pro-poor, pro-Philippines campaign that provides naturally made products for your everyday personal use. Aside from that, you get to use organic products that are effective and affordable all while contributing to a cleaner and greener environment. It wasn’t long until yours truly have stumbled upon their humble abode and experienced the immense power of nature.

Feel the power of Elemi and Orange combined, to fight your skin imperfections!

Let’s start with the basics. We all know that facial wash is a staple in our everyday lives. Morning and nighttime regimen won’t be complete without cleaning our face first. The biggest problem, however, is being blessed with an oily skin (Don’t worry, I can totally relate. UGH. The agony). Luckily, Human Heart Nature provided us with a solution. Specialized for Oily or Combination skin, Balancing Facial Wash will leave your skin feeling soft, supple and oil-free (I vouch for it. You won’t be feeling greasy at all. That is if you won’t go out prolonged under the heat of the sun and sweat excessively. In that case, just spritz water or mist in your face, let dry and use powder. HAH! Instant tip. How’s that?) And if you don’t fall in the category, there are three washes to choose from. Whichever your face type is, there’s one especially made for you, and for your wallet! For a 50 mL bottle, Php 79.75 price range is a definite must-grab.

Rub those dead skin cells away with a dose of 100% natural goodness!

Next is exfoliation. You need to remove those dead skin cells if you want a younger looking skin, and to get that, you have to exfoliate. The best thing about Human Heart Nature Purifying Facial Scrub, aside from its 100% natural goodness and a price of Php 104.75, is that it is gentle on the skin but tough on dirt and grime (Reminds me of a detergent commercial, don’t you think?). You’d instantly feel the difference after one wash, I have. Another tip, twice to thrice a week of exfoliation may harm your skin, as it will not give enough time for the skin to renew its cells. So, make sure to use your Purifying Facial Scrub (It smells like strawberries, by the way. I love strawberries!) maximum of once a week.

A miracle oil that will keep you wanting more!

Last but not the least, Human Heart Nature’s Sunflower Beauty Oil. Don’t be deceived by its name. Although it’s an oil, it is definitely a grab even for those with Oily or Combination skin like me. With almost endless benefits to choose from, 23 to be exact, this one is the holy grail of skin-care au-naturale. From soothing those irritating rashes, removing stubborn makeups, to an overall moisturizer, the possibilities are endless. Just keep your eyes open! Oh, wait! Make that 24 benefits, since this thingamajig only costs Php 149.75 for a 50 mL bottle which can last you for almost two to three months. See that? Magic!

And there you have it, skin-care addicts! Three totally rad products from a proudly Pinoy brand that promotes both beauty and nature. A definite go-to shop for your obsession on all things natural (and safe!), WhenInManila.

When in Manila, it is not uncommon to come across an internet shop full of people playing Defense of the Ancients, or better know in the streetzzz (yes, multiple letter z’s) as DotA. The real-time strategy video game is actually a customized modification of the game Warcraft III. Kinda like how crack is a low purity form of cocaine, DotA is a smaller scale version of Warcraft III. You sniff Warcraft III in the restroom of clubs, while DotA is best done smoked through a glass pipe in a dark alley. Well, not really. One thing is for sure though is that, just like crack and cocaine, DotA is highly addictive. Here are several reasons why DotA addiction is similar to drug addiction.

6. Peer Pressure

“Hey man, do you play DotA? Looking for a good time?”

DotA addicts are always looking into converting others to play with them. If you ever meet one, chances are that one of the first things they’ll ask is if you play also. If it just so happens that you don’t, they will try to convince you to play. The first hit is free of course and you start off as a casual player. From casually playing, you start to become dependent and it gets harder to turn down invites from other addicts to go out and play. Before you know it, you’re headed towards a downward spiral and you’ve become a DotA addict yourself.

5. Bad Crowds

In the world of DotA, players form groups called ‘clans’. Don’t let the Scottish-Gaelic word meaning ‘family’ fool you though because clan rivalry can turn hostile very quickly. Highly sophisticated and scientific studies show that 1 out of 3 shameful pwnages are caused by clan violence.

[SoW]2Pac: Scourges of the WESTSIIIIIDE!

[SoE]Biggie: East Coast Scourges baby!!

[SoW]2Pac: (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻

[SoE]Biggie: >>:OO

Watch this DotA related brawl at a net shop in Morayta: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucilnhB-SJE

4. Financial Issues

These days, internet shop rates go from P15 to P20 an hour. It doesn’t sound too bad until you’ve been playing 12 hours every day and you rack up quite a heavy bill. More highly scientific studies have shown that college students divide their allowance into: 8% for food, 5% for commute, 2% for school supplies and 85% for DotA. Once that 85% is depleted, there’s no telling what a DotA addict will do for extra money. “Can you lend me a hundred pesos? My uh… dog has uh.. sclerosis.”

3. Physical and Health Changes

If you personally know any DotA players, here are some physical tell tale signs to look out for that will indicate that he or she has developed DotA addiction. Playing DotA for excessive periods of time can cause:

-Blood shot eyes related to disturbed sleeping pattern

-Unusual odor from decline of grooming and bathing habits

-Weight lost from skipping meals in order to continue gameplay

-Weight gain from a steady Cobra energy drink diet and lack of exercise

-Wearing of the same clothing for several days straight (Probably a DotA or Mineski related t- shirt)

2. Neglecting Responsibilities

DotA can also easily replace your life priorities. DotA addicts will disappear for days because they’d rather play than say… show up to work, attend classes, or pick up grandma’s dementia medication from the pharmacy. So, while the DotA addict is leveling up his hero character, work or school performance are most likely dropping. Not to mention granny just almost tried to cook the pet cat into nilagang pusa.

1. Relationship Problems

DotA addiction can also be trouble for romantic relationships. It’s probably because DotA is pretty much like having a third-party involved. When given a choice to either play DotA or spend time with their significant other, the DotA addict will most likely choose DotA. If you ever visit their Facebook, you will probably discover that they have have more screenshots of gameplay than pictures with their girlfriend or boyfriend. Once the DotA addiction starts becoming a serious conflict in the relationship though, the addict will turn to secrecy and continue the addiction behind their life partner’s back. The secrecy usually poisons the relationship and eventually leads to a break-up.

”Happy Anniversary, babe. I’ll be there in 30 minutes, I’m stuck in traffic. What? I can’t hear you? There’s no sig—-” *hangs up and continues to play*

When In the Philippines, there are a handful of locations that boasts of the perfect balance between the comfort of the simple poblacion life and the raw beauty of nature. On top of my list is Camiguin Island, trapped between Visayas and Mindanao, a province that has maintained its pristine natural condition amidst the influx of a booming tourism industry.

The first time I visited Camguin was in 2008 as a segue to our stay in Cagayan de Oro. Hours of travel by bus and boat practically scrapped one day off our vacation. This time around, we flew in via Cebu Pacific’s Manila-Cebu-Camiguin connect flight which was launched April of this year. No bumpy roads. No seasickness. No wasted time. And as they say, time is gold.

Cebu Pacific’s ATR 72-500 flies from Cebu to Camiguin on a MWF schedule.

This blog post is for people like me who are always on the go. If you’re looking for the essentials, this is it. This is Anthony Bourdain’s “The Layover” flattened and pressed into a neat 1000-something word essay of how to go, where to go, what to do in Camiguin. So here goes.

Going to Camiguin

The island of Camiguin is accessible by air or by sea. Ships and fastcrafts from Cebu, Bohol, and Cagayan de Oro travel to Camiguin on a daily basis. Two major ports operate in Camiguin: Benoni (from Mindanao) and Balbagon in Mambajao (from Visayas). Alternatively, Cebu Pacific flies into the Mambajao Camiguin Airport from Cebu via an ATR plane on an MWF schedule.

Upon arrival, it is a MUST to grab a free copy of the Camiguin travel brochure care of DOT-Camiguin to learn more about the island and the places you wish to visit.

Going Around Camiguin

Your mode of transportation around the small island should be based on two things: How many are you in the group, and where do you plan to go for the day?

When moving from Point A to Point B, you can hail a tricycle or multicab for less than a hundred bucks. If you’re worried about a driver jacking up the price (which is unlikely, because the Camiguin Tourism Office is trying their best to regulate the transportation sector in this regard), you can always ask two drivers how much it would cost and go for the cheaper one.

Camiguin’s tricycles can accommodate up to 6 persons.

For day trips, the tourism office highly encourages hiring multicabs (6 to 8 persons) or Hi-Ace vans (8 or more – or you want to do things in absolute comfort!). A multicab costs 1,700 pesos for 8 hours while a van would cost 2,000 to 2,500 pesos for 8 hours, depending on the number of passengers.

Tricycles, while nice looking, are not advisable because (a) they’re not regulated for day tours, and (b) it would be difficult for them to reach the higher places, which are essentially the must-go places.

If you’re alone and familiar with the territory (or you’re just direction savvy) you may opt to rent a motor bike and cruise at your own pace. Again, ask around to get the best price for your buck.

When in Manila, and you are a person who loves the idea of biking around the metro with hundreds of fellow cyclists, – long rides such as the recently concluded “Freedom Ride” conducted by Dakila is the event for you! The event aims to give notice to the rampant human trafficking, and put an end to this modern day slavery in the country. It wasn’t coincidence that this event happened on a day where we were made free from the clutches of foreign invaders back in 1898. Coordinated freedom rides also occurred in Iloilo (June 12 7pm), Dumaguete (June 11, 4pm) and in Zamboanga (June 12, 7am) making this a nationwide event!

actual 29Km route from Eastwood and Back via Marikina, Katipunan, Timog, New Manila, and Ortigas (map grabbed from Dakila’s event page)

Over 400 cyclists and advocates surged Eastwood for the Manila Freedom Ride, making this one of the largest rides in the metro this year. The route was designed to be easy to accommodate amateur riders who can still enjoy the trip of going around the northern part of manila in their bi-pedal transportation despite the long kilo-metric route. The ride started with a short opening program explaining the advocacy and the aim of the ride, the program was also graced with the appearance of Dakila’s VP, known activist and song writer Noel Cabangon (who will later on be taking part at the Freedom Concert right after the ride).

Noel Cabangon welcoming the cyclists to the Freedom Ride

Dakila Hosts talking about the advocacy that they fight for!

The ride was fairly easy, and most seasoned cyclists will find this route to be really simple. But as I said, this route was designed without any prejudice to the skill levels of the attendees (which is a good thing!). This was also a rare opportunity for us (bike commuters) to bike without the constant fear of being hit by rampaging busses, or fast cars in major roads such as C5, Marcos Highway, and Edsa.

The start of the 29km Freedom Ride

After the 29KM ride, cyclists were treated to a Freedom Concert featuring Dakila’s Vice President Noel Cabangon along with other bands such as Radioactive Sago Project, and Up Dharma Down.

Noel Cabangon takes the stage and sings to the cyclists relaxing after the ride

At the end of the freedom ride, we were not only given insights on the human trafficking situation in the country, but we were treated to a day of fun, sweat, and ultimate bonding with fellow cyclists. I am proud to say that I was part of an event that will possible encourage change towards the modern slavery situation. The freedom ride also paved the way for me to meet many active cyclists whom I will be riding with really soon!

When in manila, where the oldest China Town in the world lay – Binondo welcomes us a place where royalties feasts. Binondo is a place where you go to when you want to eat legit Chinese food, knowing that the competition is not only tough but really strong, King Chef fruitfully celebrated the first year of their hard work. King Chef was unveiled last June 2012 at the Lucky China Town Mall. Because of their freshest ingredients and finest herbs spices straight from China, King Chef can really say that they can serve a fine dining experience for the kings and queens.

I’m a fan of Chinese food, whatever category of Chinese food it may be, whether if it’s just plain Chinese food, Taiwanese, Cantonese or whatever –nese it may. This made me interested in checking out how King Chef differs from all the Chinese restaurants around them, even though that I’m from the south, me and my friends drove all the way to Binondo just to have a feast for the so called royalties.

King Chef Seafood Restaurant – Binondo is Mr. Michael Chan-Ang and Mrs. Marites Apido Ang’s second branch. Their love of food and compassion to excellence pave the way for a fine dining restaurant in Binondo to be a great hit.

I was really excited on what King Chef will bring us, and as expected they gave me a mouthwatering Chinese foodie experience as they serve the first dish. The first platter of the many dishes they brought us was the Assorted Cold Cuts Combination, there were different appetizers in that platter but what caught my attention was the seaweed (it’s the one in the middle). The seaweed had its very unique texture when it had a jelly like noodle. It was a sweet chili jelly like noodle. It made me crave for more because the spicy flavor was just little and the sweetness was just enough, it gave me the “I think I want more” factor and before I know it I was asking the waiter if he can serve more seaweed.

Assorted Cold Cuts Combination

I like food that has different texture, it gives the food uniqueness and character. Which led me to the next dish that I loved, the Dumpling in Seafood Spinach Soup, what I like about it was the texture as well, it had a combination gooey wishy-washy feel when you take a sip. It was really light, just right to give a heads up that the next dishes will also be blast.

Dumpling in Seafood Spinach Soup

After tasting the tasteful appetizers, I was even more excited for what’s next. What main course should I look after? Which dish shall I gaze upon? What cuisine will make me crave? And there was the Fried King Fish in Mango Sauce, answering all my questions.

The King Fish was crispy on the outside and soft like it was steamed inside. At first I thought that it was a simple salt and pepper mix, but when I tasted the Mango Sauce, it was really a treat for the king! The flavor of the Fried King Fish complimented the sweetness of the mango. The Fried King Fish in Mango Sauce is where salt meets sweet mango. I thought that salt are only for unripe mangoes. But I was wrong, salt is also good equalizer to ripe sweet mangoes. Oh I just like how it blended!

Fried King Fish in Mango Sauce

Here are the other dishes that also made my day!

Birthday Noodles

Mango Balls

Almond Fish Gelatin

If there’s one thing that King Chef is really proud of, it’s their service to their customers. Great food is everywhere, nice ambiance is everywhere, but having a great service is only found in a place where the staffs have the heart for excellence and quality. That’s what King Chef is, it’s about the complete package that will make each of every customer a king and queen.

So When in Manila, if you want legit Cantonese Food, go to King Chef Seafood Restaurant! Where everyone is a king and a queen! Where everyone is special!
