Much has been said about the country’s first world class museum – some of which are this, this, and this – and it only deserves the recognition it has been getting. Once again, The Mind Museum delivered its promise of providing an interactive experience as it celebrated the International Museum Day.

Last Friday, The Mind Museum joins the world in celebration of the International Museum Day. To make the day at the museum extra special, informative lectures and interactive workshops were held.

The Mind Museum invited local scientists to share with us how it is to be the minds behind all the studies and innovations that make our lives easier and more enjoyable.

I really loved it that through the lectures, we were able to know what’s going on in the field of science and technology. It’s not everyday that you get to learn how doctors and scientists work together to come up with a vaccine for dengue or study about human microbiome and Norovirus.

Our local scientists believe in the power of museums such as The Mind Museum in helping people see the beauty and wonders of Science.

“It (museum) gives life to the books that you read, the National Geographic that you’re watching, your imagination,” says Associate Professor and Specialist Microbiologist Marilen Parungao-Balolong.

The Mind Museum visitors were given two workshops to choose from: Vermiculture Workshop and Robotics Workshop.

Vermiculture is the process of using worms to decompose organic matters to help sustain plant growth.

Did you know that worms have five hearts and that they’re actually hermaphrodites?

Kids really had fun getting their hands dirty with the worms and the soil while the Mind Movers teach them how to take care of the worms which by the way they took with them home!

I even heard one kid said “Now I’m not scared of worms anymore!”

During the Robotics Workshop, kids got to listen to the maker of Mimo, the Mind Museum talking and walking robot — Joe D’ Mango!

He shared his knowledge about robots and he showed us some of his awesome robot collections! Kids can’t help themselves from asking questions and Joe D Mango answered them all!

After the short discussion on robots, the kids were given the opportunity to try making robots themselves.

The Mind Museum also held a competition where the contestants’ knowledge about the exhibits at the museum was tested.

Aside from offering a great museum experience through its exhibits and innovations, The Mind Museum also gave us the chance to celebrate the International Museum Day in the most wonderful way possible which just proves it’s really world class. State subsidized libraries are the mark of a developed nation. In Brisbane, Australia, for example, the have 33 city libraries where you can take books, DVDs, magazines, etc. home with you, surf the internet or play video games, and more! All for free!

When In Manila, where libraries are pretty much nonexistent unless you’re in school (and most of these are deserted), people get their fix of the written word in the bookstore! And last Saturday, I headed over to Fully Booked at the Fort aka BGC for Free Comic Book Day 2012 redux!

 The entire Justice League (and then some) greeted patrons at the door.

For Free Comic Book Day, the doors opened at 10a. The line stretched all across High Street and looped around the aisles of books. I was in line for over half an hour, but for some reason, not a whole lot of faces looked annoyed. There was a lot of reading material lying around, after all. I chatted with a guy next to me in line who was with his 8-year old niece whom he was grooming for the world of geekdom, and had a stimulating 20-minute conversation on everything to do with the genre. She’s in good hands because this guy really knew his stuff.

After inching along in line for what seemed like ages, we were rewarded with…one comic. I suppose it was to ensure that they didn’t run out of stock.

The titles for FCBD range from the extremely good to cat litter lining material. For a review of all the free comics released this year go here. Unfortunately, the really good titles (such as the hardcover Mouse Guard by David Petersen) weren’t released in Manila. What’s up with that?

For those of you who didn’t read my last post, I gave out an online comic as well, titled The Man Who Wanted to Be the First Politician Who Didn’t Harm Anyone and Other Stories which you can download for free. Here it is again:

When In Manila, there are many beautiful sceneries and memories to be captured every day and how do we record them? Through photographs? Through journal entries? Well,  Urban Sketchers Philippines captures them one sketch at a time. 

I remember Arnold Arre’s talk back in Graphika Manila 2010. He advised artists to sketch everyday to get better at their craft. By sketching everyday, he meant capturing everyday happenings by sketching like the people in the coffee shop or the scenery where you’re at. The list goes on and on. I myself wasn’t an artist so I wasn’t really engaged with sketching but I did like his tip. I never really tried it after the convention though.

Last May 19, I tagged along Urban Sketchers Philippines‘ First Anniversary Sketch Walk. Urban Sketchers Philippines is a chapter of the international Urban Sketchers organization. It wants to prove that despite all odds, they are able to share a glimpse of the beauty (and not) of our cities or otherwise about life through their sketchbooks. They share their works online after every sketch walk so people can view their works.

Now, I can’t sketch to save my life but it looked like fun. Plus, Urban Sketchers Philippines believes that it has less to do with skill level or technique. What is more important is experiencing the process of looking, seeing, feeling and recording on paper. 

I arrived at Quezon City Memorial Circle around 10:00 A.M. I walked around to look for people who are sketching. When I got to the  Quezon Memorial Monument, I saw a guy in the middle of the field and sketching under the intense heat of the sun! Now that’s what I call dedication!

 I thought, Where are the other sketchers? After that, I went around to look for the other sketchers. They had their own spots where they were making their magic. Some drew alone while others drew in groups.  

I saw what he was drawing in his sketch pad. Really great stuff!

I  took a glance at what some of them were working on. Some were just sketching. Some were sketching then inking. Some were sketching, inking, then adding watercolor to their works.  Not all of them made the Quezon Memorial Monument their subject. Some were drawing other objects from the surroundings or the people who were also at the park that day.

Also, before going to the sketch walk, I checked out the Urban Sketchers Philippines blog site. They weren’t limited to sketching on sketch pads. I saw some sketches on receipts. Also, someone sketched on his Samsung Galaxy Note. Who would have thought these everyday objects can be utilized as a canvass for art?

A cool thing that happened was when a family was passing by, they noticed the Urban Sketchers Philippines by the street. The young boys were observing the sketchers so a member approached them and asked  if they wanted to draw with the group. The kids were lent sketch pads and pencils so they can join. After drawing, their parents said they would definitely be on the look out at the Urban Sketchers Philippines blog site for updates on future sketch walks. 

Their works were great. When I was seven years old, all I knew to draw were stick men! Really good to stimulate an interest for the arts with the young ones.

After walking around, I was sweating like there was no tomorrow. The sun’s heat was intense and here were these people, not minding the heat because they love what their doing. All for the love of the arts.

I finally found a spot for sketching and decided to make the Quezon Memorial Monument my subject.

I know, I know… Not really the greatest sketch artwork you will find but hey, it’s a start. More sketch walks, more improvement!

At around 11:45 A.M., the members were starting to gather around and chat with each other. Some of the members were far off so I only got to see them during this time. Some were students while some were professionals but one thing’s very certain: they all have a passion for the arts!

When in Manila, it’s always difficult to plan a night out with friends given that there are so many awesome places in the Metro. Whether you’re in for a chill hang-out night in a pub with a couple of beer bottles, ‘pika pika’, and a kick-ass band. Bigfish and Freedom Music present Bigfish Innovation White 2012, the country’s biggest musical congregation of white-clothed clubbers, at the World Trade Center! This year’s lineup is a who’s who of the most promising acts in electronic music today: Cosmic Gate, Myon & Shane54, Bobina, and Emma Hewitt, who are joined by Bigfish’s John Paul Lee and Chris Raeuber.

German DJ/producer duo Cosmic Gate made the global dance community snap to attention when they jumped 43 places to land on No. 19 of DJ Mag’s Top 100 for 2009. That was the same year they teamed up with the striking, silken-voiced Australian songstress Emma Hewitt for the single “Not Enough Time”, a dance music hit that earned them nominations for Best Trance Track at the 2010 International Dance Music Awards and Best Selling Trance Act at the 2010 Beatport Awards.

Hungarian duo Myon & Shane54 are another European trance tandem that’s carving a name for themselves as they gig from continent to continent. With a list of solid singles and fierce remixes to their name, even trance luminaries Armin van Buuren and Above and Beyond are fans of their work, having featured them on their respective compilations.

Also on the bill is Moscow-based trance master Bobina, whom Ferry Corsten has called “one of the most talented music producers ever to come out of Russia”. Having released the country’s first #1 electronic dance album and being the first Russian DJ to snag a spot in DJ Mag’s Top 100 roundup, Bobina is hailed as a dance music god in his home country.

Joining these trance greats at the Innovation White stage are Team Bigfish’s main men John Paul Lee and Chris Raeuber.

Weeks 4 and 5 of 9 Works Theatrical’s Adult Class of Stage Camp just went by! And let me just say that it is becoming more and more challenging for me, but then again, I’m also excited to see myself and my other classmates each step out of our comfort zones.

You know in those ninja movies where the sensei asks the student to wipe windows or sweep the floor and the kid has no idea why they were doing it, but somehow we all know there’s a lesson being taught? Well, that’s how our first 2 weeks of Stage Camp somehow went. We did a variety of exercises all to teach us about energy and getting comfortable with ourselves. These small exercises somehow pieced together in the end and in became clearer to us that we weren’t just playing, we were learning.

After 2 and a half weeks of that, it was time to prepare for our production number. HERE RIGHT NOW, A ONE NIGHT ONLY CABARET. Hope you guys don’t miss it! (Though part of me doesn’t want you guys to see me sing and dance!)

For the minor song numbers, I was assigned to sing with Stacey Villanueva and Dess Verzosa, 2 equally talented and sexy ladies. Our song number… will be a surprise! Let’s just say I really need to step out of my comfort zone! hehe

As soon as we were taught the basics of our group number, everyone was already eager to start practicing. We practiced wherever we could – by the elevator shaft, the rooftop and the corridor! It’s inspiring to see how dedicated everyone is. I couldn’t be more thankful.

I know I’ve said this a MILLION times, but I DON’T SING. haha Not that I don’t want to, in fact I actually love it, but I always sing out of tune and I hate it. So, I just don’t sing.. in front of people. Anyway, I’m still trying my best at rehearsals and my classmates are also giving all that they can. They have beautiful voices and I’m really in awe every time they sing!

Our teachers Topper Fabregas and Anthony Ong on the other hand are REALLY REALLY talented! This class wouldn’t have turned out this great if not for them! Not only are they really good, but they have the patience and understanding to be able to share this talent with the rest!

The Philippine Center for Creative Imaging or PCCI, is the premier training hub for the country’s growing pool of digital artists and photographers. It conducts intensive, hands-on workshops in graphics software and their real-world applications. Digital Video Production Workshop: a 2-day workshop by Dale Custodio

The workshop I attended took place last May 12-13 at PCCI in Makati. There were 9 of us in the class handled by TV director Dale Custodio.

The classroom set up was very conducive for learning. The professor is seated in the middle while the class is seated around him. Also, there are limited slots so you’re sure to get you’re money’s worth when you enroll!

Sir Dale was really good and he handled the class very casually. He often told jokes and was open to answer any question we had to ask (with a few jokes before answering of course! haha). He also had to adjust his lesson plan depending on the students knowledge on the subject – which I think was really good. This way, no one would get left behind! So don’t worry if you don’t know much and you’re classmate is a pro, the teachers at PCCI will try their best to adjust the lesson to make sure everyone gets the most out of the workshop!

I’m not sure about other classes, but most classes, including ours provide manuals / additional notes to ensure that all topics are covered, especially those that aren’t discussed due to lack of time. Our manual compiled by our teacher himself. Moreover, ALL STUDENTS are entitled to a FREE refresher course afterward! So if in a few months you forget what you learned, you can always come back for FREE! Cool huh?

The first day of our Digital Video Workshop was all lessons and video watching! We were taught the basics for video productions such as camera angles, shots and movements! We also watched a couple of videos, one being the 2003 French Academy Award Nominee “I’ll take the next one” where we observed the different components in creating the video.

Such a beautiful film don’t you think? And after analyzing it, it made me realize how the simplest things and every single factor contributed to making it this way. It’s not just the cast… it’s EVERY single thing. Camera, lights, angles! They come to life!!!

“After this class, you will never enjoy another movie again.” Why? Well because we’d be so busy observing the different components like lights, sounds, angles, continuity and more! I have to agree! Though I still get lost in most movies and shows, there are moments when I find myself wondering what “style” was used or where the camera was placed! It’s fun actually! haha

PCCI believes that learning by doing is the fastest and most effective way to acquire new skills! Hence, we were given some homework and also tasked to create our own short film. Though I’m pretty sure some of the “tips and styles” taught were already being implemented in the past, we became more conscious and aware of what we were doing NOW.

I really learned a lot during the workshop and was please of how “casual” it all was. I wasn’t pressured, nor did I get “bored” as if I were really in school! (heehee) I enjoyed every minute of it! …and as an added bonus, snacks are provided!

When In Manila, look for the best of international cuisine in the part of the Metro Manila where it truly is global – Bonifacio Global City. I was invited to try out the food selections with the rest of my family at Wee Nam Kee Serendra but do get your eyes working though since Wee Nam Kee is situated in the quite corner. Hainanese Chicken Rice is the specialty but expect not only that but a lot more authentic Singaporean cuisine cooked in the original way it is cooked in Singapore, Hawker-style.

Fast service seems to be a tall order in some restaurants but not in Wee Nam Kee Serendra where we were overwhelmed at the sight of food arrived almost simultaneously. Sambal Kangkong is of course the first casualty of our hunger for appetizers. Nope, this is not the kangkong with bagoong that a certain fastfood chain used to serve well but that with chili paste and just a bit of shrimp paste complement the taste with bits of shrimp. The appetizer is a meal in itself but we have more coming in.

Rice will always be part of the Asian cuisine and in Wee Nam Kee Serendra they have Wee Nam Kee Fried Rice, improved version to your typical Yang Chow Fried Rice with more bits of seafood. I love seafood and the Honey Crisp Squid went well with my seafood cravings. Despite being covered with a honey-based sauce, the squid retained its crunch. The secret? They used dried squid that is already crispy dry and fried it further hence the crip is retained.

Hong Kong Fried Noodles in Singaporean cuisine? Why not? Singaporean Cuisine is Chinese-inspired and a feast of Hong Kong Fried Noodles was a saucy treat with mostly seafood in the mix. To my delight, there was lots of squid in the noodles and appealed mostly to my younger brother since he was allergic to shrimp and prawns. Speaking of prawns, Cereal Prawns are a hit! Did I say cereal? These giant prawns were cooked in a cake of cereals mixed with spices which gave the prawns a light flavor and the cereals a light seafood flavor from the prawn. If you are allergic to prawns, you can have the one with crabs instead.

When we seem to be full, we got Wee Nam Kee’s Signature Chicken Rice served with half portion Steamed and the other half Roasted. For this one, you have an option of using ginger, chili or sweet soy for your sauce especially for the steamed portion. If sauces are not your favorite, you can have the roasted one with the skin still surprisingly crispy and the meat tender. Do not forget to drink your barley juice with this one, remember, in traditional Chinese medicine, it restores the bodily balance.

Republiq is one of those hip new clubs that everyone wants to go to. I went there once in my first week, but it wasn’t exactly club hours before I left. For the Absolut event it was slightly different.

When I arrived I was greeted by two gorgeous blonde Australians outside the doors. +2 points. I walked inside and found two gorgeous brunette Australians. +2 more points! At the very least I knew the crowd would be…interesting. There’s something very unique about the club scene. Maybe it’s pulsating music filling your body and thoughts, or perhaps the dark environment broken up by flashes of blue, green and purple lights coupled with dry ice. Or maybe it’s the tightly packed room where people are leaning over to shout into each others’ ears just to be heard. Whatever it is, Republiq has it.

When in Manila and you’re in the mood for something creative, visit Heima Store ! Heima is a fun & quirky furniture design store with branches at the LRI plaza in Makati & Cubao Expo.  Heima held its third Design Discussion last Saturday with its collaborators as speakers.  The following illustrators, photographers and videographers shared their stories, techniques & experiences:

 Soleil Ignacio – a freelance illustrator who loves drawing girls with long hair  just had an exhibit Hello Sailor at Heima Cubao together with the next speaker shared the progress of her amazing illustrations from personal works to local and international magazines. 

 Tokwa Penaflorida - also an illustrator and a self-described “book sniffer”  gave a talk about Storytelling for Non-writers and work-in-progress videos that will make you wish you had his skills and imagination.

 Aleyn Comprendio - an analog photographer from Iloilo who also works for Mayad Studios shared her tools, methods & set of dreamy photos with inspirations from the Scandinavian countryside. Together with the next speaker, she held her exhibit Southern Stories at Heima Makati just last week.

 After the Third Installment of Heima Design Discussion, cocktails were served and everyone proceeded to the shop to view the new collection. The room was filled with photographers & shoppers!  I don’t know how many times I’ve suggested to Heima for them to put  up a cafe since everyone just wants to stay & hang-out in this artsy place.  Speaking of shopping, every time we go to this store, our stack of (irresistible) washi tapes goes up. Tsk, tsk, tsk :)

The event was definitely majestic as it was hosted by the very bubbly and legendary Cosmopolitan cover girl, Joey Mead. The program also included breathtaking song numbers by former Cosmo Online Hunk, Markki Stroem, rising singing sensation and an awardee of the Fun, Fearless Female for 2012, Zia Quizon, and the Techy Romantics.

The party was incomplete without the delicious food and refreshments, as the Bar gave out a number of cocktail drinks to make the evening even merrier. As the night played on, the crowd heated up and could not stop howling and squealing when the “15 Hottest Hunks Ever” were introduced onstage, including Marc Nelson, Aly Borromeo, Rafael Rosell, Jay-R, Paulo Avelino, Hideo Muraoka, Enchong Dee, Brent Javier, and Jon Hall. The awarding of the Fun, Fearless Females for 2012 took place right after, as strong and independent Pinays who made a huge impact on society were given their plaques of honor by Myzra Sison, Cosmo’s editorial director.

The finale of the incredible evening was when Cosmo’s 15^th anniversary issue cover girl, Anne Curtis, came out to give a toast to the magazine and its entire crew. Anne also celebrates the 15^th year of her career in showbiz, which definitely makes her the ideal cover girl for the May 2012 issue.

There’s no other magazine that does it like Cosmopolitan, as it has become every woman’s go-to bible when it comes to anything beauty, fashion, style, love, and career-related. 15 years of helping and redefining the modern Filipina really is such a pivotal moment for its fabulous team, and we can only look forward to more years to come! Anti-Gravity Yoga is perhaps the most interesting kind of yoga compared to hatha, vinyasa, bikram or ashtanga because it requires a thin, stretchy fabric that serves as a hammock and aids you in doing the various poses. It can be a seat while you perform variations of crunches, or a prop to help you invert and hang suspended in the air. My favorite part was the last position, where the hammock was wrapped around us like a cocoon and we laid down and swayed peacefully while inhaling all the positive energy we could get from our workout.

A few tips before taking up the class—wear sleeves and maybe shorts or leggings below the knees, because the hammock can sometimes ride up or dig into your armpits and under the knees when you put your weight on it. Refrain from wearing jewelry as well, because it can damage or graze the cloth. Lastly, trust the hammock! Even though the fabric may seem thin, it’s guaranteed to carry about a thousand pounds!

When In Manila, well… I mean When In Pampanga, my friends and I went to Robinsons Pampanga to participate on the cosplay event HOBBY FEST 2012. For those of you who don’t know what Cosplay is, it is a form of art wherein you dress up as you’re favourite Anime, Manga (Japanese term for Comics), Movie or Game characters. I’m a big fan of this community and I was uber excited to share my stories with WhenInManila.com readers! 

This tour started with a free bus ride from Robinsons Galleria to Robinsons Pampanga. Inside the bus we were crazy as always fooling around with the other cosplayers. Upon arriving at the destination we were greeted by some of our fellow cosplayers. I even got a chance meet up with some of my buddies there.

Overall, the event was a success we had a blast and enjoyed our stay in Pampanga and next year we are looking forward to go back not only for the cosplay event but for the sightseeing trip as well. When In Manila and craving for a delicious and hearty breakfast meal, you definitely have to get it at Kanto Freestyle Breakfast!

Back in college, my friends and I usually go out of the dormitory during late nights to buy some food to eat while studying ( sometimes more on the eating part). There are many food establishments around our area which are open for 24 hours. Definitely convenient if you’re craving for tapsilog at 2AM in the morning, and I know I’m not the only one who experiences that!

Last May 14, I met up with my friend at 9 PM to have some late-night dinner. I only had coffee after work so I was really hungry. We decided to try Kanto Freestyle Breakfast. Well, it wasn’t an easy hunt in going there. Good thing the residents around the area were kind enough to tell us directions. My friend slowly drove and we peaked at San Joaquin St., he said “Looks like just residential houses to me.” “Yeah, seems like it. Where could it be?” I replied. We got lost for 30 minutes! After searching and searching, we finally found the place.

Finally found the way to Kanto Freestyle Breakfast! 

The place seems like the typical 24/7 eatery that we see at the streets with the usual roster of -silog meals in their menu. As the old cliche goes, “Looks can be deceiving.”  This is definitely not your typical eatery by the street.

The pictures at the tarpaulins outside already says “Hey, we have some good stuff here!” The pictures do not lie!

Now what should you eat at Kanto Freestyle Breakfast when its 10 PM and you are extremely hungry? After looking at the menu, everything I read sounded delicious!  They have a variety of meals and sandwiches to choose from. Well, here’s what we ate for dinner:

Strawberry and Blueberry Pancakes

I really loved the blueberry pancakes with maple syrup! It’s even yummier when you put some butter with it. I think I almost ate all the blueberry part of the pancakes. My friend like strawberries so he enjoyed the strawberry part. Yummy!  

Kanto Boy Breakfast Meal – Pampanga Tocino

We got to talk to one of Kanto Freestyle Breakfast’s owner, Vince Juanta. He said they only serve tocino from Pampanga. Same goes with their Beef  Tapa meal; they only serve those of from Batangas. Only the best for the breakfast meal-loving diners. Also, every rice meal comes with not one, but two eggs! Well, the highlight of this meal for me was the pesto tomato. I don’t usually eat tomatoes, I even remove them from some dishes that I eat but with this one, I wanted to take home a bucket of it. Really tasty! It converted me to some tomato-lovin’.

French Toast and Bacon with Two Eggs Freestyle

They definitely got how I liked my fried eggs: scrambled and fluffy! Reminds me of those Perfect Scrambled Eggs that Gordon Ramsay cooks on Youtube. The bacon strips were cooked perfectly! Not too crunchy but not under cooked. The French Toast drizzled with maple syrup and topped with butter gives a good balance to the saltiness of the scrambled eggs.

Eggs Benedict

The potato wedges were soft and chewy.The melted cheese and uncooked egg yolk of the sunny side up really went well! I was very surprised with that. The ham was good too. The bread would have been better if it was a little toasted for that breakfast-y feel but all in all, this was a good dish.

Chugged down all those delicious food with some hot chocolate. I had coffee before going to Kanto Freestyle Breakfast so I opted for this one.

When we got to chat more with Vincent, he told us that he was the one who conceptualized the menu. What he had in mind when thinking about it was “What breakfast meals would I always want to be available at our house?” Now if only this was the case at our home, then I would be one very happy camper!  Also, he told us about the freestyle option from the menu. Diners can mix and match breakfast food for their own customized rice meals. Mine would definitely include bacon and pesto tomato overload. You can view the Kanto Freestyle Breakfast menu here.

 Overall, I can say that getting lost to find Kanto Freestyle Breakfast was definitely worth it. The food was great. The place looked nice and safe even after the late hours of the night. The staff was nice. And also eating gourmet breakfast meals without the fuss of being in a fancy restaurant.
