It was in 2015 when it was announced that there would be a Darna movie set to be in production under Star Cinema. Fans of the Pinay superhero rejoiced!
There was more celebration when it was announced that Angel Locsin would be playing the role yet again. Locsin played the role in the Darna TV series on GMA-7 in 2005.

Unfortunately, fans of Angel Locsin would be disappointed with the recent news the Darna film project.
In ABS-CBN’s press statement, which was also posted on Star Cinema’s Instagram account (see below), health reasons were cited as the reason for Locsin’s withdrawal from the film.

The actress reportedly injured her back last year, which prompted her to leave the project. Fans regained hope when she announced that she was doing therapy for her back. Unfortunately, this recent announcement from ABS-CBN is final.

She may not be coming full circle with reprising her role as Darna, Locsin will still be doing projects with the Kapamilya network.
Angel Locsin was one of the most iconic actresses to bring Darna to life on the small screen. Erik Matti reportedly signed on to direct the film.
We’re excited to see who will replace her in the newest movie adaptation of the Pinay superhero.
