Emma Stone to Play Cruella De Vil in Upcoming Origin Film

After Emma Stone’s award-winning turn as Mia Dolan (Best Actress in the recently-held Academy Awards) in the award-winning film La La Land (Best Director for Damien Chazelle), Stone is set to portray the 101 Dalmatians villainess, Cruella De Vil, in the near future.

The actress will star in Disney’s Cruella, which will work as an origin story similar to Sleeping Beauty‘s Maleficent. The studio confirmed the news of the casting in April 2016.

Rumors have been swirling as early as January of that year, but it’s a nice reminder after Stone showed incredible depth in La La Land (and all her previous roles).

There’s still no word when exactly Cruella will come out, but Disney mentioned that it’s set to come out in the next three years.

The last time De Vil was portrayed in a live action film was in 2002, in the sequel 102 Dalmatians. She was portrayed by Glenn Close.

In the meantime, fans of Stone can look forward to Battle of the Sexes, where she will portray tennis player Billie Jean King. The story is loosely based on the 1973 match between King and Bobby Riggs. The real-life tennis match became news when Riggs taunted female players to compete with him in a match. King took the offer. We’re not going to spoil the story for you, but let’s just say that the match was a spectacle, and drew in 90 million viewers worldwide.
