Journey Live in Manila This March 21, 2013!

 

Quite recently, a graduating student from the University of the Philippines approached When In Manila for his thesis on media coverage of local and foreign acts for the year 2012. According to his research, When In Manila has published significantly more reviews of foreign concerts vis-a-vis local ones. Being one of the more avid concert goers in our group, he interviewed me on the plausible reasons for such a difference. What ensued was a 20-minute discourse on the dynamics of talents, promoters, its marketing arms, concert venues, and publications – all of which might be interesting to some but surely not so much relevant to the current article. What I’m driving at, rather, is that at the end of the interview I felt somewhat guilty for personally attending more concerts by foreign acts than local ones as a writer.

Bad habits are hard to break. But I hope this is one way to make amends. After all, Arnel Pineda is 100% Filipino.

So WHEN IN MANILA, mark your calendars for Journey‘s triumphant return as they perform at the SM Mall of Asia Arena this March 21, 2013! Expect Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory, Deen Castronovo, and our very own Arnel Pineda to play “Don’t Stop Believin'”, “Open Arms”, the tireless “Faithfully”, and all their greatest hits in a probably nostalgic, hopefully surprising, and ideally magnificent concert to draw the 40’s, 30’s, some 20’s, and everyone else who grew up appreciating their music – fantastic 80’s riffs and all! – and lyrics.

Hard to believe, but this is only the second concert of Journey in Manila. The first was four years ago for their Revelation tour, a concert that was documented in the Journey Live in Manila DVD. As the story goes, lead guitarist Neal Schon discovered Arnel Pineda via YouTube singing Journey cover songs with local band The Zoo. Since then, he has recorded two albums Revelation and Eclipse with them and is at the core of what keyboardist Jonathan Cain calls a “world band” that is Journey.
