Disney’s “Frozen” in 2015 may have been the family story we all know and love, but the animated hit film could have had a different story and ending altogether!
Producer Peter Del Vecho has revealed for the first time how the movie could have gone. For starters, Elsa and Anna weren’t originally sisters! Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said:
“So when we started off, Anna and Elsa were not sisters. They weren’t even royal. So Anna was not a princess. Elsa was a self-proclaimed Snow Queen, but she was a villain and pure evil — much more like the Hans Christian Andersen tale.
“We started out with an evil female villain and an innocent female heroine and the ending involved a big epic battle with snow monsters that Elsa had created as her army.”
The movie was also supposed to open with a prophecy of how ‘a ruler with a frozen heart will bring destruction to the kingdom of Arendelle’. While for most of the movie it’s assumed that the ruler responsible for Arendelle’s destruction is Elsa, it would actually be Prince Hans, who triggers an avalanche meant to take out not only Elsa and her snow army, but also all of Arendelle. This is how Anna persuades Elsa to use her powers for good instead of evil.
But according to Del Vecho, the story felt like it was something they’d seen before.
“It wasn’t satisfying. We had no emotional connection to Elsa — we didn’t care about her because she had spent the whole movie being the villain. We weren’t drawn in. The characters weren’t relatable. Making them related led us to the idea of her living in fear of her powers. What if she’s afraid of who she is? And afraid of hurting the ones she loves? Now we had a character in Anna who was all about love and Elsa who was all about fear.
Looks like their change in plans worked.
