Disney Features Its First Ever LGBTQ Character In Pixar Film ‘Onward’

Disney is taking a small but significant step ‘onwards’.

The animation studio recently revealed to Yahoo Entertainment that the upcoming Disney-Pixar film Onward will be featuring an openly gay character.

Although audiences have speculated at the inclusion of LGBTQ characters in previous Pixar films – such as Toy Story 4 or Finding Dory – none have been confirmed so far. This would make Onward‘s character the first animated LGBTQ character in the Disney-Pixar universe.

Her name is Officer Specter and she’s a Cyclops police officer who openly identifies as a lesbian. She is voiced by Lena Waithe, a gay screenwriter and actress.

“It just kind of happened,” Onward producer Kori Rae tells Yahoo Entertainment. “The scene, when we wrote it, was kind of fitting and it opens up the world a little bit, and that’s what we wanted.”

Director Dan Scanlon adds: “It’s a modern fantasy world and we want to represent the modern world.”

Onward is set in a not-so-magical world where even mystical creatures are forgetting their roots to magic. It revolves around two brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot (Tom Holland and Christ Pratt), who set off on an adventure to spend one last day with their father.
