Derrick Williams suits up for Minnesota Timberwolves

Derrick Williams is drafted to Minnesota Timberwolves after having quite a remarkable run with collegiate basketball as Wildcats’ center. He was the No. 2 pick for the NBA draft 2011 and second No. 2 overall selection for an Arizona player. (The No. 1 pick was Kyrie Irving who was drafted to Cleveland Cavaliers). Actually, he’s one of a handful of players who have ever been drafted from the said state.

6-foot-8 Williams is sought to be the most pro-ready player in the NBA and is one of the products of Sean Miller’s coaching. He might be lacking in the size department, but his smart plays, athleticism, and finishing ability clearly make him a logical pick.  Williams is known for his outside shooting, isolation scoring and post scoring. His great footwork, above average ball handling and speed make him a formidable opponent on the court. He could make some improvements though in the rebounding area and in limiting tunovers.

What can the Timberwolves expect from their new teammate Derrick Williams? Coach Sean Miller defines it one-by-one. “He’ll hit the ground running as a scorer,’’ said Miller. “He gets fouled so easily. He’s explosive and has a great first step. He can shoot from 21 feet. He’s clever in the way he can score. He’ll find ways to score.’’

Williams will be joining a team full of young players and he’s really looking forward to it. “I think that with everybody being so young on the team, I think you can push each other,” Williams said. “Everybody has young, fresh legs. I’m just going to look forward to them pushing me, and me pushing them as well.”

Last season, the Minnesota Timberwolves have only won 17 games and lost 65, setting the record for the league worst. But the emergence of Williams may prove to be the answer to the Timberwolves’ season-long drought.
