Could Leonardo DiCaprio Be Starring as the Joker in an Origin Film?

Leo DiCaprio Joker

What do Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto have in common? They have all played Batman’s nemesis The Joker, adding their own flavor to the iconic role. Can you imagine A-list Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio joining the list and donning the purple suit and white makeup?

Last week, it was announced that Warner Bros. is developing an origin movie that will be produced by Martin Scorsese, the legendary producer and director behind Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Hugo, and more. Rumor has it that the studio is bringing in Scorsese to hook DiCaprio. Both are long-time collaborators, having worked on the films The Aviator, Gangs of New York, The Departed, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street in the past two decades.

Rumors are also swirling that Leto, who has played The Joker on Suicide Squad (and in an upcoming sequel and spinoff), is not pleased.

It might be a little confusing as the Scorsese-produced origin story will not be a part of the DC Extended Universe, which includes the poorly-received Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad. Only its latest offering, Wonder Woman, has been critically praised.

The origin story will be part of a series of standalone films, which will include a Batman stand-alone that won’t star Ben Affleck.
