Choco Pies in the Sky from South Korea to North Korea

 

Choco Pie is a sweet treat composed of two small disc-shaped layers of chocolate-covered cake with marshmallow filling in the center. It was believed to be introduced to the North Koreans through the Kaesong Industrial Complex, which is a joint operation between North and South Korea.

Choco Pie is produced in South Korea, and since its introduction, it has become very popular to North Koreans. Washington Post reports that this popularity might lead to an uprising, which is why Kim Jong-un allegedly ordered it to be banned in North Korea.

Earlier this week, as an act of rebellion, volunteers composed of former North Koreans and South Korean activists placed numerous Choco Pies inside bags that they aim to send to North Korea by releasing them in the sky using giant balloons. 

According to Mashable, the use of balloons to travel objects across the border from South to North Korea isn’t unusual. In the past, they are used to carry things like anti-North Korean leaflets and USB sticks that have photos from places outside the country.

Thus, the people who sent out the Choco Pies flying in the sky really hope they reach the people from North Korea.

Personally, I think this is the cutest form of rebellion that I have seen so far. It’s an act of kindness that transcends the differences between the two countries.
