I feel so blessed when I got the chance to exchange thoughts with its author Kathryn Pua! How nice it is to meet someone who share the same vision as yours. We used to be “lost” souls as well, but due to our yearning for “meaning,”  we bravely chose the path less traveled.  The book came as a result of her intention to share her wisdom and the secrets on how she was able to achieve the happiness she is now enjoying. I’m very impressed with the passion and dedication which she has shown so far and this is one reason why I’m giving my full support to her. I believe that everyone should have a copy of this book!

By the time I got the book, it reminded me of the movie Eat, Pray Love. I knew I just had to reward myself with a good book and a good meal shared with a good friend that moment so I invited my friend Badeth for dinner  at Va Pensiero for they serve authentic and simple Italian style pizzas which I think are closest to what Julia Roberts also enjoyed in the movie. I knew I just had to set the right mood and ambiance while reading it! hihihihi

 rewarding myself with a good book and a good meal shared with a good friend!

 I enjoyed doing the activities which the book asked me to do. It made me realize a lot of things. It made me think about the things which I have been neglecting and depriving myself with.Unlike all regular planners where you’re asked to list down the things we HAVE to do and accomplish, in The Book of Ten, you are given the freedom to just be yourself and write the things we WANT to do!

It is a book that will help you reflect and ponder on the things which really matter to you. The very vital things which you know will complete your existence. It is loaded with activities, ideas and even free space for you to freely write anything and everything!Feel free to write down your dreams, aspirations… the things which will make you happy! Let this book guide you in your journey to live the life which you promised yourself you’d live!

Let me share to you my story….

Years ago, I used to be so pessimistic. I had too many fears and woes. I hated myself so much I couldn’t even take a photo of myself for I  believed I was so ugly. I rejected so many opportunities because I never had any confidence in myself. People looked down on me, I was often ridiculed, criticized and often told that I was never to succeed. The saddest part was… I believed them. Little did I know about this invisible box which I confined myself in for the longest time. It was when I was at my lowest where I finally realized that enough was enough and that I will never allow people to treat me that way ever! Slowly, I struggled to pick up the pieces of that broken me and slowly allowed my wounds to heal. I went on a journey deep deep inside my soul in order for me to be whole again. It really takes a lot of courage to dare know the real you. With a lot of prayers and the support of my family and friends, It didn’t  take too long for me to get back on track. When I was finally able to switch my vibration to a much positive one, unexpected things started to unfold and until now, I’m still at awe with the things I am receiving. It really pays to have faith that all is well and that everything will be for the good. I realized that when you do your best to align yourself to your source and be who you are, all the universe can do is soothe and support you all the way! Everything for me is possible now. My life is so fabulous and ever unfolding!

Years ago, I dreamed of seeing Palawan but since I couldn’t really afford to travel, I never seriously planned to go and if I would, I’d just book the cheapest ticket, sleep at the cheapest inn and take the cheapest tour. Roughly 2 months ago while my  partner Frank and I were chatting during one of our out if town trips, I remember telling him that Palawan would be a nice destination to go to next. We really had no plans then for it was just a casual talk. Perhaps we have unconsciously placed an order to the universe and miraculously, after only 1 day, I received a call that we were to be sent to Palawan and stay at a premiere resort….

It is never too late my friend! Now is the perfect time to love yourself and give it the attention it needs. Life is too short to be wasted on unimportant people and things. Life is supposed to be good for you! Be happy! Smile a lot! Count your blessings. Look for reasons to feel good. Dig out positive things in the past. Look for positive things from where you stand and expect positive things in the future. And because I genuinely want you have a happy year, allow me to share to you one of my tried and tested methods. I really couldn’t exactly put into words how thankful I am with the overflow of blessings which I reaped since I started this positive switch!

In line with my previous article about being grateful for what we have, now, it’s time to ASK and visualize the things which we WANT to materialize!

YES it’s as simple as that! You really just have to ASK!! You don’t even have to know how you will have it…. all we  have to do is ASK and let the universe do its course!

For this year, I made a vision board of the things which I WANT to have. I noticed that most of us often want a house, a car, the latest gadget, a better relationship but the thing is…. there are 2 factors why these wishes of ours don’t happen. First, we easily get demotivated. We easily lose hope (booooo!!). You see my friend, when you allow negative energy to be the dominant vibration in your life, the universe will just mirror it back to you! So what to do? Choose to feel good! Make sure to let that spark of light that is within you  shine! Second, our wishes are usually vague! You have to know what you WANT!  Be specific with what YOU WANT!

Let me show you my vision board…

1.  Taking photos make me feel so ALIVE so I WANT to upgrade my camera to a Canon Mark II! I also WANT to setup a simple studio in my house for our food photography passion! I’m sure Frank would agree on how taking photos changed our lives for the good! Photography means so much to us so I hope we can have more time to improve our craft! I’m so happy to tell you that I’m slowly setting it up during my free time! You see, when something makes you happy, you will definitely find ways to feed your soul with it!

2.  Though my financial status is fine, I really WANT to close my card and SAVE MORE for a business I WANT to invest in!

3.  To travel for FREE!! yeah I know it sounds crazy but that’s what I WANT!! With the use of our talents, I’m certain that this is  very attainable! hihihiihi

4.  It has been more than 2 years after I suffered my most painful heartache ever and honestly speaking… I’m thankful that it happened! ‘Coz if not, my life will never be as happy, creative and positive as now! I never would have met the wonderful people who are currently in my circle! I’m thankful for the lessons learned so this year, I believe I’m READY to fall in-love again! I know he’s somewhere out there and I’m so eager and WANTING to be with him! I know he’s definitely worth the wait!

5.  Ultimately, at the right time, like every girl, I WANT to settle down and be a mom. I WANT to have kids. A daughter or 2 or 3… and one of them will be named Maggie.  I WANT a simple house and live harmoniously with my husband and kids. I WILL be a wife which my husband will be proud of. It excites me whenever I think about this because I often visualize myself teaching my kids on how to cook and preparing special meals for the whole family. Yes, I’m very much family oriented and I want only the best for them!

I have compiled photos of the things I WANT on this online vision board and made a point to look at them everyday for I know that the more I focus my energies on it, the more it will manifest! I know you may be thinking now like, “What if I don’t get these things?” or “This is  impossible!” —- > If you’re thinking of this right now, then you just hindered yourself from receiving them because of the negative vibes which you have just sent the universe! My advice is just STOP the pessimism (boooo!!)  and just enjoy dreaming about your WANTS! Enjoy it… Savor it… BELIEVE that it’s YOURS!!!

You know what? I don’t really worry if I don’t get exactly these things I’ve listed because most of the time, I GET an UPGRADED VERSION of it which is even more wonderful!! You see, when you focus on happiness and the things which keep you HAPPY and ALIGNED with your SOURCE (we usually call it GOD), there will be no room for any doubts or worries because the universe will provide you with all the good which you need!      

Decide to FEEL GOOD NOW! Live the LIFE which you promised yourselves you’d live may it be when in Manila or anywhere around  the globe!

Visualize An Abundant 2012 with Your Very Own Vision Board!

There  is sooooo much to be thankful for when in Manila or may it be anywhere in the world! The only sad part is that oftentimes, we fail to recognize and appreciate them because we are too focused on what we do not have rather than the things which we do have!

So before we bid goodbye to 2011, may we take the time to remember and be thankful for the blessings that has been showered to us this year! 

I started working on myself in having this “attitude of gratitude” in 2010 and I am so overwhelmed with the abundance of blessings which I’ve been receiving ever since! To name a few, my health greatly improved, I got promoted as a Team Manager and I even won raffles and contests since I made this positive switch!  Easier said than done.. I know, but it is NOT Impossible! It simply starts with a mental decision to be thankful and feel good no matter what. It’s about choosing the dominant vibration you wanna emit.  It takes time…. it’s a process and a journey! But once you get there…. the harvest is just unlimited!

I’d like to share to you my gratitude board. I just love looking at it!  If you noticed, they are all about people and experiences rather than material stuff.  Each photo holds a very special memory which I truly cherish in my heart! I’m sure these photos will also put a smile on Frank’s face. I do have thousands of photos in my hard drive (more than 20k photos this year only! phew!), so I just had to pick a few ones! And yes, the people around me are my true treasures and I am so thankful to share these blessings with them! I always believed that the best thing you can give someone is a “good memory.“ My partner Frank and I had the time of our lives this year! We sure made soooo many great memories together and shared them with our family and friends! We never saw it coming but it did! Rockets started going off especially when we started  taking photos together and just allowed ourselves to be who we are.  The two of us just work so well together that many people started to notice the “magic” in our photos! I am soooo thankful to have him in my life and for the wonderful friendship which we both share. I believe it is soooo rare to find a person which you share a real chemistry with, so I really feel lucky because the universe allowed our paths to cross! I believe that the things we did this year are but seeds  which we planted… and since we planted seeds of goodness, I’m certain that the harvest will be bountiful! I look forward in experiencing more and more great stuff together with him! =)

We are so very thankful for Vince and wheninmanila.com for believing in us and for being sooooo supportive of us! Wheninmanila.com definitely opened new doors  with all the places and people we got to meet along the way! I may say we gained more confidence with our creative and people skills due to this.  I believe this is just the start of something sooooo great and Frank and I are so proud to be part of the wheninmanila.com team! The Attitude of Gratitude! Grateful For Such An Abundant Year!

When in Manila, Christmas starts as early as December 1st. Christmas spells carols, blinking lights, Santa Claus, and everyone’s favorite – Kris Kringle! The true fun of unwrapping gifts is not from the gifts we get under the Christmas Tree, but from the gifts we receive every week from an unknown person we call “mommy” or “daddy” or our Secret Santa. After a day’s search for the perfect “something green”, or “something soft and cuddly” for our “baby”, we also anticipate what we will receive.

If you are getting tired to give and receive (and shop for) something funny, naughty, long and sexy; and your room is already filled with the same stuff and knick knacks you receive every year, you can forget about those words and prepare for new challenges this season.

Here are new “somethings” to share with your family, coworkers and friends:

1. Something Embarassing to Carry in Public

Make your “baby” feel like he/she is Harry Potter or Hermione with a broom, or make him feel like a professional plumber with a plunger. My coworkers received the most creative and embarassing gifts last week from dustpan and broom, to plunger and the ever-reliable “tabo”. I was hoping someone would give a chamber pot (aka “arinola”)! Now that gives you an idea. Make sure that you don’t require gift wraps for this theme and pray that your “baby” is a certified commuter.

2. Something Trending in Twitter

News and social media feed us with the latest trends, Fashionistas and stylistas would love to get something trendy as the word is usually associated with fashion. Why not give a twist to the theme and make it something that is trending in Twitter. It’s a great battle for creativeness as the theme will require us to give something that is related to controversial topics, politics and personalities.

3. Something for Private Use

It could be anything that one uses in private – could be dental floss, razor, or waxing cream. Or it could also be anything that “two” (partners) use in private. There is no restriction, as long as the gift is useful and not recycled.

4. Something Reminiscent of Childhood

We always want to feel young and reminisce about the good old childhood days. You are in luck if you share the same age with your group or team. But for families and coworkers who are in different age brackets, it is the perfect theme to share something about your childhood and bridge the gap of age differences. I grew up with Shaider and BioMan – and I will exert an effort to find a gift related to these shows to give to my “baby” who grew up playing Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja. Now think of your childhood days – the TV shows you watch, candies you eat and clothes you used to wear – that should give you an idea what to give and share.

5. Something That You Need to Insert

That beats the “Something Naughty” by 10 points! But seriously, it could be anything that you insert in a gadget (like a memory card), or in a photobook (like postcards). It doesn’t need to be naughty.

6. Something Hand-Made

It’s time to support the talent of Filipinos and local businesses. You can buy woven bags, or knitted cover-ups. You can even be more creative by adding a personal touch to your gift and make your own.

7. Something That You Received But Haven’t Used

We all received gifts in the previous years that we just haven’t used or simply didn’t like. Let’s apply the saying “one’s trash is another’s treasure”. Make it clear in the guidelines that the gift should be something that we can use.

8. Something You Can Use After a Year

Gifts don’t have to be something that you can readily use. Let’s think of it like an inheritance which you cannot get or use yet, until you are at a certain age. In this case, something which can be used after a year. It could be gym membership for someone who plans to start losing weight next year, a kitchen gadget for someone who is graduating from a culinary school next year, or as grand as ticket to DisneyLand (and your baby will have a year to prepare and save for the trip). Those are just suggestions. I know you can come up with something more creative.

9. Something Imported

We all love to receive something “imported” or from the PX Store when we were younger. It’s the perfect time to relive the excitement with this theme. It could be something that is bought from a trip, or anything that we can buy with prints that says “Made in China”, “Made in USA“, or “Made in <insert country here”>. Please be clear with the guidelines that it should be something safe and environment friendly.

10. Something You Don’t Want to Own

In this theme, let’s temporarily forget the Golden Rule. This will be a nice theme to discover each other’s dislikes and personalities. Time to know if you and your “baby” feel the same way about the “thing”. As for me, I don’t want to own anymore of that figures like kissing doves and angels which only collect dust and occupy space. I am sure you can also relate when I say picture frame and towels.

When in Manila, one must always keep in mind that words are very, very powerful. They can build someone up, but just as easily, they can tear you down. In high school, I fell victim to bullies who’d tell me to go back to Canada, called me Canadian Dust, they’d make fun of my accent, and would turn off the lights in the classroom, surround me, and would shine flash lights in my face. It was terrifying, fortunately for me though, my bullying was confined to a group of immature high school girls and was easily resolved once I informed my older brother of the situation.

Nowadays, bullying has been taken to a whole new level, has become more aggressive and is more terrifying than ever, case in point, cyber bullying. With cyber bullying, the victim is not only at the mercy of the instigator, but is also at the mercy of thousands of other people across the country (and even the world), who, more often than not, choose to partake in such childish antics. Furthermore, with old school bullying, you’d be bullied in school, but would then be able to go back to the safety of your home. With cyber bullying, you could be at home, school, the mall, church, your grandma’s place, as long as you’re connected to the internet, you’re subject to attacks. 

In the United States, the number of suicides committed by children, teens and young adults as a result of cyber bullying has been increasing at an alarming rate thus emphasizing the point that such an issue should not be taken lightly. Currently, a school mate of mine has fallen victim to cyber bullying and as a result, is greatly distressed and traumatized by the situation. An impostor has gotten hold of her photos via Facebook, has created an account under a false name and is posting upsetting wall posts, thus subjecting my school mate to a tirade of angry reactions from people who don’t know any better . If you’ve come across articles regarding an “Angie Marie Ligot” stating that she hates being a Filipino and etc., please be informed that it is a HOAX and that the young lady in the pictures displayed in https://www.facebook.com/uap.pride is not responsible for any of the posts. In fact, please click here for the TRUTH behind the scam. 

In the Philippines, several lawmakers are urging their ”fellow members of the House of Representatives to support the pending anti-cyber bullying bill as an additional protection for Filipinos in the cyberspace… The bill aims to deter, prosecute, and eliminate cyber-bullies from the cyber world and ‘create a culture of free and unfettered exchange of information, opinions and ideas based on mutual respect and sensitivity towards the feelings of others…’ Covered by the proposed anti-cyber bullying bill are electronic devices that include telephones, and mobile phones, computers, laptops and tablets, or any other device, tool or implement that may be developed for instant messaging, text messaging, chatting, emailing, video chatting, interaction in social networking websites, and other virtual interaction.” Read full story here. 

However, until “Anti-Cyber Bullying Act of 2011″ is passed, I am praying that many, if not all of you, will take it upon yourselves to be more discerning of posts that you read on Facebook, and to make sure that the person who presumably posted it, is really said individual and is not an impostor. Also, please be responsible netizens and be mindful of the things you say when choosing to respond to such bogus posts, because after all, not only do your words and behavior destroy an innocent person’s feelings and reputation, but it destroys you too. Better yet, do yourself one better and opt to not partake in such affairs and instead report such incidents to the proper authorities. I SAY NO TO CYBER BULLYING AND I HOPE THAT YOU DO TOO. 

When In Manila, SAY NO TO CYBER BULLYING!

When In Manila…’WALK THIS WAY!‘ Yes, walk your way to Carlos Celdran‘s world-famous tour  of  ’Intramuros’ in Manila.  Celdran gives guided tours of the old walled city of Manila, the Intramuros, and people throng to him, following him like he is the ‘Pied Piper’ of the Philippines !! He sings the National anthem of the Philippines with his hand on his heart (and boy, he’s a pretty good singer!). The tour begins….

All of us in the tour group of about thirty, marveled at his eloquence, sophistication, knowledge of history and that satiric-comic wit that laced every sentence. Is CARLOS CELDRAN just a tour guide ? He was pure entertainment from 3 Pm to 7 ! We walked when he walked, looked when he showed, stopped when he stopped, listened when he talked, ate when he gave. We were mesmerized, in short. And what was our man selling— a Filipino’s own version of his land’s history! Beauty!

Like the mythological Proteus, the sea-god who could change to any form, Carlos Celdran has the theatric ability to create a scene of Philippine history from pre-Hispanic 1500s to this date —  just all by himself and his little sling bag, a microphone and a boom-box!

Even his attire is a statement on Pinoy culture. Carlos rolls the sleeves of his ‘Barong‘ : a shirt that’s a cross between a south-east asian shirt the Kurta (with its light embroidery and pastel hues) and a Western formal shirt (collars and cuffs and buttons). This Barong-clad Filipino pulls out of his bag one of his several hats and morphs into a five act play!  

It seems that the walls of Intramuros are speaking through him– Fort Santiago, Rizal Shrine, River Pasig, Ateneo University, the skyline above the ruins left by the second world-war come alive with distant echoes from Manila’s heterogenous past.

Carlos is a social activist pushing for the Reproductive Health Bill in the Philippines (a controversial topic in the Catholic Christian context of Philippine’s socio-political fabric), he’s also a performing artist and an entrepreneur. But it is in his tours that he comes across at his pithiest best. Everything else he does seems an off-shoot of his complete identification with his country.

When you meet Carlos Celdran at his tour, you feel that Manila belongs to him. There is an undeniable, uncanny familiarity between the moss-covered stone walls of Santiago and this boy as he hollers “SECULARRRRR!!! “  to remind the present day Philippines of its aspiration and identity. In fact, there is a lot of social responsibility attached to such actions. I am surprised at his perkiness, the nip in his every statement. And he is such a regular guy– not very tall or short, not very thin or fat, not very Spanish or Filipino! Unless you see him perform at his tour…you might pass him by.

Just as you might pass Manila…enjoying yet finding faults with it…without appreciating the quintessential saga of the Philippines and its capital city. Carlos could be held erroneous, biased, politically motivated…. And over the years we might see him a little sullied by his success and endorsements. But for now.. he is still Sterling.

An ardent lover of his country who breaks his own heart as he admits the downsides of being a Filipino, and breaks a foreigner’s heart when he points at the inequities met out to his beloved homeland by the Spanish, the Americans, the Japanese and the Chinese. A romantic-pragmatist who sews those wounds by praising the incidental benefits of being influenced and espoused by the invaders.

When I stepped out of this charmed ‘regression’ session with my group of tourists from all over the world, we were all suddenly thrown into the present Circa 2011– cars on the streets, traffic on the way out of Intramuros. To jam-packed Manila roads, enormous billboards and faces that looked an admix of Asian-Caucasian, Chinese, Korean and Indian, American ;)

 This variety that never made sense before Carlos– made sense now.  That Filipinos are like ‘HALO-HALO‘ – a mix-mix Filipino dessert-  of all the cultures that set foot on its shore. That’s right– on Carlos Celdran treats his guests to the local chocolates, and ends the WALK THIS WAY tour by serving the yummiest Halo-Halo in town to ALL ! 

His Tita passes around a menu of Pinoy restaurant nearby, which is a perfect way of ending the tour.

When In Manila, ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.  If it sounds familiar, its something that came from former US President John F. Kennedy which is a statement not only applicable to the United States of America but to our own beloved country as well.

When you think about the Peace Corps, the first thing that comes into mind is nobility, service and … greatness of spirit. 

Today I met an American who is much as well a Filipino like many of us – he is Hans Groot, a Peace Corps volunteer who came to the country back in the 1960s, has taken root in our country because of the deep and lasting impression this service made upon him and is the editor-in-chief of this book.   He compiled various Peace Corps stories of volunteers, Filipinos who hosted them and people who became their friends along the way.

What exactly does a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines do? They help in the social and economic development of our country – as aides to education, fisheries, health education, agriculture, nutrition, coastal resource management – and so on.

As you flip through the pages of this book, you will find out more about the 50 years they were here and some memories from the 8,000 volunteers who have served in our country.

Aaron S. Williams (Peace Corps Director, Washington DC) graced the event at the UP Executive House with various ambassadors and dignitaries to commemorate this milestone.

It was an afternoon of getting to know more about the organization, the work the volunteers did (some examples are the Bohol Deaf Academy, Palawan Conservation Corps, Soil & Water Conservation, Mindanao State University) and some post service ventures like the Peace Corps Alumni Foundation for Philippines Development (PCAFPD), The Hobbit House, HELP foundation, Bantai Civet Story to name a few.

Also got to see a few of their scholars who are leading successful lives – who by being served by the Peace Corps, now allows to serve the Philippines themselves.

There is a lot more to find out about this book as you get hooked on the passion for service other people had for our country.  When in Manila, this coffeetable book makes you think – 8,000 volunteers have braved our country and served it – as an individual how could this book inspire you to leave the Philippines in a little better shape than how we found it?

Such is the slogan of the Johnnie Walker Join the Pact campaign of which is the brand’s global commitment to promote the safe and responsible consumption of its products. Last November 5, 100 lucky individuals were blessed with gold passes which granted them access to Johnnie Walker’s Step Inside the Circuit party held at Prive Luxury Club. The party was not only meant to raise widespread awareness about the issues revolving responsible drinking and drunk driving, but it was also a means to encourage those present to join the campaign and to sign the pact to never drink and drive via www.jointhepact.com

The highlight of the night was the introduction of Johnnie Walker‘s Responsible Drinking Ambassador since 2008, two- time McLaren Mercedes Formula One World Champion, Mika Hakkinen. Growing up, my brother and I were avid fans of Formula One, with me cheering for McLaren and my brother for Ferrari, so when I heard Hakkinen was coming to Manila, I knew I had to pull out all the stops to meet him. During the party itself, it was difficult to take a picture with Hakkinen, but with much perseverance and my skills of wading through crowds and long lines, I was able to not only take pictures with THE Mika Hakkinen, but shake his hand and exchange a couple of words. (Haha, I’m sorry, I realize I sound like a fan girl)

Anyways, I was later told that I’d be able to interview Mika one-on-one before a private cocktail party that was to be held at Red, Shangri-la Makati the next day. I made sure that I went prepared, that I was dressed appropriately, had my questions ready and I swore I’d maintain an air of professionalism during the interview, but once I stepped into the interview room and was sitting 2 arms length away from Mika, I was a nervous wreck. Thankfully he was very accommodating and answered my questions in a friendly manner that immediately put me at ease. 

While sipping on his cup of coffee, Mika, myself and another interviewer were able to discuss several things but great emphasis was put on why he joined the campaign in the first place, to which he was reminded of his almost fatal ’95 Formula One car crash in Adelaide. He spoke of how not being in control of his car was not only terrifying but of course, life changing. He did mention though that he was thankful that the accident happened in a controlled environment and that the only person injured was himself. He went on to say that that was why he joined Johnnie Walker’s campaign, he said that being sober and losing control is one thing, but being drunk, getting behind the wheel, and posing a threat to not only yourself but also to other innocent people is, as he said, STUPID. 

I will never forget that moment when he looked at me dead in the eye and said, NEVER EVER DRINK AND DRIVE. For Mika, it doesn’t matter if you only had one shot of tequila or one bottle of beer, if there’s a drop of alcohol in your system, don’t even think of getting behind the driver’s wheel. He brought up the importance of having a designated driver, a role that is easily interchangeable per party, that way, no one misses out on the fun. 

“In its simplest form, responsible drinking means that people need to be accountable for their own safety and that of those around them. Part of this means not drinking alcohol if you are planning to drive. There are so many options available whether it is appointing a friend to be the designated driver, booking a taxi or using a public transport for your journey home. It may sound simple, but unfortunately there are still people who think it is acceptable to drink and drive and I am determined to do all I can to help change these attitudes.”

The opportunity to sit down and chat with a racing legend is one that I will never forget. I honestly believe that Johnnie Walker made a good decision in appointing Mika Hakkinen as their spokesperson because who better to tell you a thing or two about responsible driving then a two time Formula One champion, right? When in Manila, make sure you make it a point to fly over to Palawan to check out Palawan River, one of the newly declared New Wonders of Nature! According to news reports, “the New7Wonders Foundation, which is based in Zurich, Switzerland, came up with the list based on votes through text messaging and Internet voting, which ended Friday.”

According to the New7Wonders Foundation, Palawan River dubbed as one of the new wonders of natures is a result of the current tallying of votes, however, the foundation has yet to verify the results and will confirm the winners in early 2012. Out of a list of over 400 locations and over 220 countries,  other gems of nature that have graced the list in the initial counting include the Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo, and Table Mountain.

“The new wonders that have been selected are the people’s choices,” the group New7Wonders explained. The new Wonders of Nature will then “bring our natural heritage onto the same level of appreciation as that which has been made by humans,” the group added.

“We congratulate each of these participants on achieving their provisional New7Wonders of Nature status, and look forward to completing the confirmation process to celebrate each one in their own official inauguration ceremony early in 2012,” the New7Wonders Foundation said.

Given all the bad media that our country has been receiving as a result of NAIA Terminal 1, this is truly a breath of fresh air and a title that the Philippines should not only be proud of but hopefully is one of the many positive titles that have yet to come.

When in Manila I’m sure that you’ve read several articles about NAIA being dubbed “the world’s worst airport” by a certain travel website, however, international news program CNN takes the title to a whole new level by ranking NAIA as the world’s 5th most HATED airport. 

In an article titled “World’s 10 most hated airports,” CNN’s Jordane Rane said up to the present, NAIA is “beleaguered by ground crew strikes, unkempt conditions, soup kitchen-style lines that feed into more lines and an overall sense of futility.”

It noted the rash of bad press it got, including the “Worst in the World” by the Sleeping in Airport blog. This was capped, however, by a “collapsed ceiling in Terminal 1, a paralyzing ground service strike at T2, and the usual charges of tampered luggage, filthy restrooms, seat shortages at gates, re-sealed water bottles sold in retail shops and an Amazing Race-style check-in routine spiked with bureaucracy, broken escalators, lengthy Dot Matrix passenger lists and creative airport departure fees.”

Style

First off,  why Wayfarer? C’mon, they never really went completely out of style, they are edgy, fierce and cool at the same time. It’s actually up to the wearer on how you’d make it all work. I mean really! They are absolutely timeless (in style since the 80′s! ) and complimenting to almost every shape face.

The Wayfarer Style is perfect for people who don’t like the larger lenses. Personally, I love the larger lenses because I feel like they cover my face much better, and there is no way that the sun is sneaking past my peepers. Wayfarers always have tickled my fancy and aside from it being a killer accessory, it’s practical to carry one in my bag every day. The classic style looks good on just about anyone. They can be worn by men and women. Their wide and angular shape can complement just about anything. Plus, they come in many colours!

Design

The design matches its quality with its sleek, simple yet streamlined design.  This one’s well made, exhibits a simple workmanship. The logo doesn’t look like crap or not in any way looks like a replica. None of those bling bling, Swarovski accentuates or whatsoever. Just pure minimalist design. The simplicity of its design complements one’s face structure. It even gives the illusion that I have a slimmer face. The thin plastic frame is so friendly that it doesn’t hurt my face and around my ears when worn.

The frame is averagely sturdy, lightweight and doesn’t make squeaky noises when you fold the glasses to store them. You know how annoying they can get right? Since I have long hair, a minor but very much appreciated feature is the shades’ bridge design.  You can see in the photo that the bridge has no  rubber pads that keep them in place but it does not cause a gnarly tangle when I put them on top of my head  (definitely not so cool when you have to bother friends and strangers just to remove sunglasses from your hair eh?!).

Fit

How well it stayed firmly in place? This is a big deal since I have a round face and tend to get the dreaded ‘bounce’ most of the time.  Very lightweight and perfectly tinted–not too dark or too light. Quality of a much more expensive product for a good price. Once I put them on, I realized that they were worth it. The plastic that they’re made out of is really durable, lightweight and not overwhelming. The joints that hold the frames together are also put together really well. Initially, it took me awhile to get used to having smaller lenses on my sunglasses, but the Pepe Jeans Eyewear just looked great. The lenses are significantly shorter so it provided me with great cheek clearance when I smile. These glasses are perfect for those with petite faces or if you prefer slimmer lenses.

Amount of Coverage

The shades protected me from the side-glare. Unlike other sunglasses, there is enough clearance that my eyelashes don’t brush against the lenses. My mascara doesn’t want to have any relationship with lenses of any kind alright. I like sunglasses that frame my face completely, and this does the job. These fit like a glove and aren’t so big I looked like one bug-eyed woman. I was pleased by the way glare was reduced while keeping a clear and sharp image as well. Clarity wise, it’s a plus.

Weather Adaptation

When I get a good, snug fit shades with a great coverage, the downside arrives when it becomes “fog gable”.  I never had to pull the sunglasses down my nose just to clear the lens.

Protection

The lenses protect my eyes from the sun very well as this has high UV rating. It is critical that you settle for one that will be able to give you excellent UV protection. Remember that sun exposure contribute to the development of cataracts as well as other eye disorders. Block those harmful eye irritants as early as now.

Cost

Ah, one of my favourite categories when choosing sunglasses. I bet yours too?  This versatile performance eyewear retails for just.   With this, you don’t need to shell out twice the equivalent of a monthly house rental in exchange for a wardrobe of great eye protection. While initially I thought they were pricey, they’re not! They are sold at a very friendly price ( <Php3K!).  They are so comfortable you would not think twice getting one. On this beautiful Tuesday morning, I find myself  hanging out in my friendly neighborhood Starbucks and skimming through the news, which of course is jam packed with everything that has to do with the brutal murder of Ramgen Revilla. I don’t feel the necessity to discuss the details of the case as I’m pretty sure you guys are up to date with it, but I do want to share this article with you.

The article, Sen. Ramon Revilla’s “Other Woman”, was written by columnist Raissa Robles and is an interesting look at the side of the story that we don’t hear on the news, that of the woman who is mother to both the slain and the accused. The article is an awesome piece of investigative journalism, so get comfortable in your seat, cue the telenovela music, get ready, set, read! 

Sen. Ramon Revilla’s “Other Woman” by Raissa Robles

I was debating with myself whether to write about this. Sleep on it and wait for more developments, my hubby Alan who is my de facto editor, advised me.

And so I did. I’m glad I did.

Because Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. did a most unusual thing this Saturday. He agreed to be interviewed by phone on the TV gossip show Startalk.

Hours later, that very night, he staged what the Philippine Daily Inquirerdescribed was “a hastily called press conference” where he asked the Department of Foreign Affairs “to exert legal and diplomatic efforts to bring Ramona back to the country and face our justice system.”

Now Saturday press conferences are unusual in the news business. A prominent personality calls for a weekend press con when he has an urgent thing to say. Or when he wants to downplay an important thing, knowing people are resting and won’t really bother to read it. Sundays are usually busy family days.

Okay, as I was reading the article, a million thoughts were going through my head, at some points I was annoyed with Genelyn’s behavior, at other times, I felt bad for her… So yeah, here are a couple of my thoughts, take note that I am trying to be as objective as possible, and that hopefully you would respect my opinions as I’m sure to be respectful of yours: 

1. As a mistress, more often than not, life will be very difficult for you, especially when speaking of financial matters with the first family and legitimate heirs still alive. There may be laws implemented that will supposedly protect you and your children, but come on, given the fact that our justice system works at a snail’s pace, nothing is going to be given to you that easily. 

2. As an adult, let alone as a mother, I think it’s only proper that you avoid turning your Facebook account into an online diary. Like the saying goes, “Don’t Facebook your problem, FACE the problem”.

3. I highly doubt that Genelyn is stupid, I’m going to assume that she was given a good education and was, in one way or another, raised well by her parents, so I do not understand why she seems overly dependent on the monthly allowance given to her and/or her children. You’re old enough and “active” enough to give birth to 9 children, use the same energy to go to work. Besides, even if you were given 1 million pesos a year, that is more than enough to raise 9 children. The Philippines has got bigger families living on a more meager budget and they’re doing just fine. 

4. To a certain extent, I commend Sen. Ramon Revilla for being man enough to (presumably) take care of ALL his children, I can see that he’s a loving and doting father, but come on woman! Of course your finances are going to dwindle, no offense, but the man has 15 other wives and tons of other children to take care of! It’s not like earning money is getting any easier these days.

I’m reminded of Mano Po 2, the one with Christopher de Leon, Judy Ann Santos and etc. I remember the scene wherein Judy Ann’s character is telling her on-screen sister that as a man, people can trash talk him (Christopher’s character) all they want, but as a father, they have nothing against him because he was always there for his kids.

5. Lastly, I’m sorry, since when was being a mistress something to be proud of? Kindly enlighten me. I understand that women may do it for certain “noble” reasons, but.. Is it really something that needs to be publicized? I just don’t get it, I understand that our culture entails our being more understanding and open- minded, but where do we cross the line? Please, seriously, I need to know.

10 Things Longer Than Kim Kardashian’s Wedding

When in Manila, I’m sure each and everyone of us has come up with  a bucket list of things we want to do. Unfortunately, there are times when we feel we won’t be able to accomplish everything on that list for a myriad of reasons, but usually the excuse is simply, “I can’t”. Well, continue to read on because once you’re done with this article, I assure you  that you will have no excuse whatsoever to not be able to pursue the things you want to do. 

Dear readers, meet Jessica Cox. 

According to several articles, 

Jessica was born without arms but decided, in 2008, that she wanted to fly. She earned her Sports Pilot certificate after three years of training, and was named the first woman to pilot an aircraft using only her feet.

“My right foot is on the yoke, and my left foot is on the throttle. I use both feet, and I don’t have special equipment. I just fly the plane,” she said.

She describes the experience of flying as freeing.

“It’s a big challenge,” she confessed, “but once you’re in the air it’s so empowering.”

Despite her disability, Jessica enjoys gymnastics and swimming, and holds a double black belt in taekwondo. Cox also drives her own car and is a certified scuba diver. She later learned to surf while she was in Hawaii She is also an accomplished motivational speaker.

“If I was born with those two arms, I don’t think I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish as much as I have as well as meet and go all over the world as much as I have,” she said.

“It was a long process. It didn’t happen overnight. I went through a lot of times when I said I wished I had arms or I wished that things were different. But I came to the point of acceptance right at the beginning of high school. And I said you know what, this is my life and I choose to be grateful for what I have and I choose to wish for more.

“When I look at myself in the mirror, I see myself as complete… because this is my life and I’ve been able to do so many things because I’ve been blessed with the family I’ve been given with.”

She then gave these tips to achieve success:

• Learn to accept yourself. Once acceptance is reached, you see yourself as complete. You move forward in believing that you can do anything.
• Have faith in God. When it comes down to those difficult moments, it’s your faith that shines through and gives you strength.
• Accept whatever challenge you are given and overcome it.
• Encourage others, especially your children, to do the same. Believe in them and let them know that there are no limits out there.
• Don’t give in to fear. Fear stands for False Evidence that Appears Real.
