WHEN IN MANILA, you will feel how Filipinos deeply appreciate music. The Videokes and Karaokes along the streets and inside the malls are evidences of which. That’s why when MAMMA MIA The Musical arrived in Manila, tickets were quickly sold out.

I was so excited because I was one of those lucky ones to get hold of these golden tickets!

The show was scheduled at 8PM in CCP.

We made sure we arrived before 7PM to avoid the traffic.

TIP:  A flat rate of Php 45 is offered beside the parking lot at Harbour Square. It is the one right across CCP. Just tell the parking attendant that you are going to watch a show at CCP.

There were already a number of guests in the lobby when we arrived.

Guess what?! There was a musical ensemble set up for the waiting guests.

It was definitely a great addition to the ambiance. This made the night more romantic, especially for those out on a date ♥♥♥

Aside from the entertainment, refreshments were also offered at the main lobby.

This was a life saver for those who haven’t had dinner yet!

The satellite bar served sandwiches (Php 125), pastas (Php 225), cakes (Php 105) and drinks (Php 50 – Php 120)

Of course, there were plenty of souvenir items to choose from.

Aside from the Programme (Php 500) and CDs (Php 900),

the next most bought item was the MAMMA MIA pink rhinestone t-shirt (Php 1000)

 and YES, all major credit cards were accepted :) 

Guests were already pouring in at around 7:40 PM.

Adults, teens  and even kids as young as 7 years old were all very excited to see the MAMMA MIA MUSICAL.

I didn’t realize that the younger generation were into ABBA songs until that night.

The show opened promptly at 8PM with the Philippine National Anthem.

The lights dimmed and the curtains raised.

I got goosebumps as soon as I heard Charlotte Wakefield (Sophie Sheridan) sing “I Have a Dream.”

Her voice was magical. She was amazing!!!! 

The fun and exciting  journey began when 20 year old bride to be, Sophie, sent out 3 wedding invitations to her suspected fathers – Sam Carmichael, Bill Austin and Harry Bright. 

The laughters continued as Donna Sheridan and her friends, Rosie and Tanya,  were reunited.

I couldn’t help but move to the music as they sang the familiar SONGS OF ABBA like:

“Money, Money, Money,” “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen.”

However, It was not all smiles  throughout the show.

I got teary eyed when Sara Poyzer (Donna Sheridan) sang “Slipping through my Fingers.”

This was the scene when Donna was helping Sophie get ready for the wedding.

I felt all sorts of mixed emotions to see  Donna reminiscing how she brought up Sophie alone and then realizing that she was already about to give her away. *sniff*

Slipping Through My Fingers is the  perfect mother-daughter song:

After all the tears and laughter, MAMMA MIA Musical was not yet over!!!

The whole theater was bursting with energy as the audiences stood up, waved, sang along and danced to the music.

It was truly a night we will never forget!!!

I told you all that David Archuleta sounds totally pinoy!

Check this out! I got to hang out with my friends from TV5 and got to hear him sing this at the studio. I’m not the biggest follower of David Archuleta but I was just really impressed at how much he prepared for this and how pinoy he sounds.

I heard him sing it a few times, sounding perfect, but each time his people came out saying David wasn’t satisfied with it yet and thought that he could do better. So he just kept recording it over and over again. This of course also really impressed me.

It seems that the great singers and artists out there are absolute work horses who strive for perfection!

The guy is Ivan Dorschner, a Pinoy Big Brother contestant from the PBB Teen Clash 2010 edition.

Funny thing is that according to our good friend and Katy Perry concert correspondent at the scene, Francine Prieto, she states that Derek Ransay was actually one of the people whom fans were screaming at to go on stage but was apparently “shy.” I guess that’s something only a Katy Perry can do!

Katy Perry asked for one shirtless guy from the crowd and Ivan Dorshner was glad to oblige. Katy Perry was so playful and fun! You can even see Miss Peacock here pinching the shirtless Ivan Dorshner’s nipple! 

So lucky Ivan Dorshner was able to go on stage and live out every man’s California Dream with Katy Perry in Manila, if only for a few blissful seconds.

LIV5 Live In Manila! 5 Rocking Bands In 4 Nights of Pure Music Madness! 

When in Manila, I have always enjoyed partying with my friends. But for a bachelor party, we decided to go to Prague this time.

Prague isn’t as cheap as it used to be, but it’s still well worth a visit – particularly if you like the idea of going somewhere safe and pretty that’s guaranteed to be full of other bachelor parties! Since it became one of the top destinations for a guy’s final weekend of freedom the capital of the Czech Republic has been overrun by groups of boys out for a good time – resulting in an industry well set up for catering to your every need.

There are all the usual suspects, activity wise – you can go paintballing; pretend to be in a band for a day; go karting; go quad biking; and shoot clay pigeons. And with a city centre set up for wild nights out there’s no shortage of the amber nectar either! The beer in Prague is notoriously good. It used to be, as I say, notoriously cheap though these days you’ll be paying prices you would expect you find anywhere else that does a bachelor party – i.e. just the same as city beer back home. It’s a whole heck of a lot better than your average city beer, mind – proper European lager, cool and crisp and usually served in exotic looking Euro litre glasses.

The locals drink half litres, so if you want to blend in a bit (and get drunk slower!) that’s the way to go. There’s a lot more to Prague than strip bars and alcohol. The bachelor party that wants to soak up some of the sights will be well rewarded with a winter visit to one of Europe’s most dramatic-looking capitals. The city still retains much of its pre WWII architecture, including a stunning fairytale castle overlooking the centre.

To get to the castle you have to wander over the Charles Bridge, a wonderful Gothic structure strung with statues that look like they’ve just stepped out the scenes of a horror movie. If you’re going to go to Prague for the beer then you can’t leave without doing a tour of the Staropramen brewery. Staropramen is premium beer anywhere else in the world – here it’s what the locals drink lime water, and a trip to its home is well worth the entry fee. You get a long tour with plenty of tasting and tons of bar snacks along the way to help mop up the booze! Check out the John Lennon Wall for a bit of revolutionary youth culture (not to mention all the ace bars and cafes in the vicinity.

The Wall has nothing to do with John Lennon or the Beatles, who never came to Prague – it’s an ongoing statement made by the graffiti artists and youths of the city, who regularly decorate it with message of peace, love and revolution, You gotta love Eastern Europe : ) Wenceslas Square is amazing in the winter, something right out of a festive wonderland. Check out the stalls selling all sorts of terrifying local foods – if you’re man enough you can probably get a jar of pickled deer (it will have hooves in it) to go with your mulled wine. Prague is so much more than just a European capital for party animals – though it is definitely that too. If you want a bit of sightseeing and some awesome culture to go with your bachelor weekend, it can provide.

If, on the other hand, you just want to drink yourself stupid and look at girls with practically no clothes on (or indeed no clothes at all) – well, it can do that too.

Filipino American Inspires X-Factor Bulgaria with Bulgarian Song “Oblache Le Bialo”

When In Manila, French singer, songwriter and former international reporter, Julien Drolon’s charismatic stage presence and feel good music has made him the music biz’s latest artist to follow in the Philippines. After a series of successful shows in Hong Kong at the Music Matters Festival, Julien decided to launch officially his career in the Philippines in 2011.

His pop music is a mix of different genre such as funk, rock, soul combined with positive lyrics about peace, love, freedom and the Philippines. The french artist visited for the first time Manila in 2007 and felt in love with the country and its people, then he came back several times in the Philippines between 2008 and 2010. In April 2011, Julien started a SM Mall Tour and performed in more than 20 cities around Metro Manila.

Following the success of his first SM Tour, Julien and his manager Chris Librojo revived the acclaimed hit song Ipagpatawad Mo with Jack Rufo, guitarist of Neoclours and one of the Philippine Music industry’s most sought after pop producer and session guitarists. Ipagpatawad mo (Pardonne-moi in french) is a romantic song in tagalog and french that will delight the fans of OPM music. Filipinos will soon realize that French and Tagalog can sound very good together as both languages are romantic and beautiful. In August 2011, Julien and his video production team went to Paris to start the making of Ipagpatawad Mo. 

Some parts of the video were also shot in the Philippines with the collaboration of Ms Venus Raj who will appear in her first music video. The beauty and the elegance of Ms Universe Philippines 2010 made her the best candidate to be part of this project.

Tiger Translate Conquers Manila at KYSS Bar: Beer and Art

According to news reports, the father of international singing sensation Charice Pempengco was killed in a stabbing incident Monday night.

Ricky Pempengco, who is separated from Charice’s mom, Raquel, was stabbed in A. Bonifacio Road, Barangay Laram, San Pedro, Laguna. A police report said Pempengco was in a drinking session and then left to buy a cigarette. The suspect, Angel Capili Jr., approached him and stabbed him with an ice pick. Pempengco was able to walk away and then sit on a pavement, but the suspect went back for him and stabbed him again.

The 12-inch ice pick pierced through Pempengco’s body, killing him. The suspect quickly left the scene. Authorities said Pempengco might have survived the stabbing had barangay officials been able to rush him to the hospital. Pempengco’s drinking buddies didn’t help him since they were afraid of getting hurt. As of this morning, police have already arrested suspect Angel Capili, during a follow-up operation. They, however, are yet to figure out the motive for Pempengco’s murder.

A call for freedom, a call for equality – this is really what MTV Exit is all about! We were very fortunate to be invited to witness this very important music event held last Oct 29 at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds. The event was organized to mainly spread awareness and gain more support in the fight to end human trafficking. It was a very successful event due to its powerhouse line-up of world class acts and its success in sending the message of awareness to the thousands who attended the event!

Approximately 25 thousand people attended the event!

MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and trafficking) in partnership with USAID and AusAID are currently working hand in hand with our government, non-profit organizations, artists and the media to educate people about this very serious issue on human trafficking and exploitation. About 2.5 Million are being trafficked worldwide at the moment so we better join this campaign to save lives and end slavery.

It can happen to anyone…it can happen to YOU so it’s a must to always keep our eyes open and be sure to report any acts of exploitation  to the proper authorities!

Aside from spectacular performances by a roster of international and local acts such as the Korean pop sensation Jay Park, US rock band EVALINE,  Itchyworms, Ebe Dancel (former frontman of Sugarfree) Pupil and Parokya ni Edgar, various videos about exploitation and human trafficking were also  featured in between performances. Moreover,  notable speakers from both the public and private sector went on stage to educate the people more about the gravity of this issue.

I was most impressed by Pupil‘s performance that night! I’m not really a big fan of Ely Buendia but I noticed that his music indeed matured a lot! His bandmates are lucky I believe!

One great thing I love about music events is that it always has been a powerful tool in bringing people together whenever there is an urgent issue which needs to be dealt with. I also admire artists who share their talents and influence for a good cause. Music is indeed a universal language which transcends all boundaries.

That night I may say was indeed a night full of great music, love and hope!

There is truly an urgency for peace and equality……..

…..and  it’s time for us to respond and take action!!

We were very much entertained but most important of all, we were educated!

MTV EXIT Holds Concert To Raise Awareness Against Exploitation and Human Trafficking!

When In Manila, after 21 years of rocking the Philippines, Razorback gives us Three Minutes Of Glory. 

There’s no one who can rock the crowd as hard, When In Manila, as Razorback does. As a staple in the industry, and an icon in the Filipino music scene, Razorback has given us hits like Giyang, Payaso, Ikot ng Mundo, Voodoo, Who Do?, and Wakasan, just to name a few. 

5 years after their last recorded project, Alive, and 5 albums (Hebigat Sounds Vol. 1, Beggar’s Moon, Star, Razorback, D’ Greytest Hithits) down the road, they’re at it again with their newest album Three Minutes of Glory. 

Razorback does not disappoint. They’ve maintained the flavor of rock and roll they have been known for throughout the years. Yet, the band has also surprised us with musical growth, exploring their sensitive side, as is evident in some of the songs on the album such as Atin Atin Lang. Three Minutes of Glory also features new songs like the hard hitting title song, Three Minutes of Glory; Earthbound, a personal favorite; Amused, sang in duet with Lougee Basabas of Delara on the record; and Daang Daang Dahilan, an original single that they’ve played at gigs while the album was still in the making.

The Music Museum was packed with Boars, lining up to get to watch Razorback and the first ever listen to the newly released album. Last night’s event was not only their album launch, but also a celebration of their 21st anniversary.

The show had the most amazing light set ups, reminiscent of Pink Floyd concerts. 

The set list, just a few minor changes with the song line up with the addition of Jealous Guy and Tabi Ng Bulkan to their performance.

At some point, everyone just stood up and went wild. I found myself standing on my seat and singing along. God knows I didn’t really know the lyrics, but on a night like this, music just takes over the crowd. It was a good night for rock and roll.

Razorback is composed of Kevin Roy on vocals, Triso Ripoll and Manuel Leguarda on guitars, Louie Talan on bass, and Brian Velasco on the drums.

After five years of guitar playing with Razorback, this is Manuel Legarda’s first album with the group. He brings a new texture to the table, albeit a very familiar one that the Boars find truly fitting.

Album was produced by Louie Talan and recorded at Wombworks Audio Production Studios (http://wombworks.multiply.com).

Razorback’s Album Launch: “Three Minutes of Glory” and 21 Years of Pinoy Rock

When in Manila, you’ve most likely heard that in 2007, over 1,400 prisoners of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center were shown dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” thus instantly making them an internet sensation after their video garnered 15 million hits and more than 300,000 views per day after being uploaded.  They also performed “They Don’t Care About Us” as part of a tribute to the late Michael Jackson. 

Not wanting to be left behind, inmates from a couple of other detention centers have followed suit, one in Iloilo which may be viewed here and the latest to join the bandwagon is that of Sorsogon which may be viewed here. 

Personally, I think that this is a good way for the inmates’ to bide away time, after all, most, if not all Filipinos do enjoy dancing. I feel that it is an effective means of diverting their attention to something positive that encourages team work and discipline, as opposed to them just sitting around, rotting away in their prison cells. I am not condoning their crimes or making excuses for whatever they did to go to jail in the first place, but sometimes, people need direction in life and something worthwhile to do, that way they don’t have too much idle time on their hands and end up doing crap. Am I making sense? Hope I am, have a nice day!

MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and trafficking) is a multi media campaign which aims to raise awareness to the issue of human trafficking. This campaign started in Europe of 2004 and have enlisted help of celebrities such as Lucy Liu, Angelina Jolie, and musicians like Radiohead, The Killlers, Muse and Click Five.

To date, this campaign has expanded throughout Asia and continues to spread the message through free concerts, documentaries, music videos, PSA’s, and youth forums. 

MTV EXIT, in partnership with USAID and AusAID, has announced it’s return to the Philippines for it’s fight against exploitation. On October 29, a free Live concert will be held at SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds for the benefit and awareness of the human trafficking issue. 

During the MTV EXIT Media Conference held yesterday, notable people in the campaign explained to us the gravity of this issue. This issue alone affects 2.5 million people worldwide, majority of which are either from Asia or in Asia.

Jerome Alcantara, Head of Policy Center from the Visayan Forum Foundation Philippines, an MTV EXIT NGO Partner.

After the speakers, there was an exclusive screening of the new documentary Enslaved: An MTV EXIT Special (Hosted by Dingdong Dantes). This is the third in a 12 part documentary series. This will be aired on November 27, 9:55 pm on the GMA News TV Channel 11.

As part of their awareness campaign, all these documentaries are made royalty free. People are encouraged to watch and distribute copies to reach more people.
