When in Manila and you think you’ve seen it all… well you better think again!

This coming February 14, Hoopla inc. together with official sponsors Manila Hotel and Fox International will introduce a revolutionary production from Argentina that’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Fuerza Bruta is an event filled with artistic thrills that will surely grab everyone’s attention and stun the senses. The show is not the typical theater play but a mix of theater, aerial gymnastics, and even a club party! Fuerza Bruta has been wowing audiences worldwide since 2005 and now it’s Manila’s turn to get some piece of this action!

What is Fuerza Bruta anyway?

The term itself actually means BRUTE FORCE. When I first heard about it, I immediately looked it up on YouTube and found amazing videos that left me dumbfounded. My first reaction was simply, “WTF?” This is something you have to see to believe.

If you’ve seen Cirque du Soleil last year, then you already have an idea. Though the two productions are very different from each other, the mixture of stunts, music and theater is something they have in common.

This heart-pounding 60-minute spectacle features performers running and tumbling across vertical wall of technicolor cloth, flying dances, a man bursting through moving walls, and dances wading on a small puddle of water on a hanging pool. YES – A HANGING POOL! Which will be placed directly above the audience!

The show is completely non-verbal and uses dance, acrobatics, visual displaces, and pumping beats as it floods the senses. Audiences are urged not just to watch, but to shout, spin, touch and even help the cast smash things! WOW! That’s definitely something new! Fuerza Bruta is an INTERACTIVE live event that makes the usual night out dull in comparison.

What makes this show even more unique is how it ends with a techno dance party for the entire crowd! So why go to a club when you can watch Fuerza Bruta and party the night away!

World over, such museums are tourist attractions. They excite and educate people about…well…the sexual history of a culture…but in most countries…one doesn’t talk about such things openly.

SEXHIBIT is modeled on a museum, but its actually a hi-fi tent exhibiting the good and the bad of sex, the safe and the unsafe of it…JUST FOR ONE DAY–TODAY–the 14th of October. So guys …go EXPLORE…from now until midnight on the Makati Avenue Open Parking. Its free entry for all adults–above 18 years i.e. Bring along an id or an attitude to prove age :)

 Durex has received special permission for this campaign from the authorities because they are not just selling condoms but promoting safe sex education, the Brand Manager claims. They are not fighting over the RH Bill either. They just import rubber…and distribute and market it….and its an open economy. Their closest competitors can’t promise the quality of safety that Durex does. Hence, the claim to public health. There’s nothing political about it, nothing religious……but putting the choice in the hands of the Individuals.

I still don’t understand. How can a campaign remain apolitical with CARLOS CELDRAN as its brand ambassador? Also, will the beloved public figure of Celdran not get tainted by going commercial through his association with Durex?

The prude in me decided that perhaps it is these minimal moments in a city’s popular avenues and hang-outs that finally determine the history of its PEOPLE and culture. I witnessed the quiet ribbon-cutting of Durex’s SEXHIBIT by Carlos Celdran, entered the sex-museum tent hoisted in the vicinity of pubs and bars like Kiss, Pussycats, Rogues, Heckle and Jeckle and what not….and learnt in half an hour the unspeakable facts of the S word that no text book or treatise, family or barkada can possibly talk about as comprehensively.

When In Manila, who says club food has to be boring?  

In the progressive hub of Bonifcacio Global City rests SEVENTH HIGH, a boutique nightspot that sets the bar for luxury in Manila’s nightlife industry.

It has three areas, The Club, The Lounge, and The Club Room.  This night I went to the Lounge, where I got a a preview of the new menu that goes with the magnanimity of Asia.

The inside was very inviting with huge couches, exquisite interiors and an aura of relaxing fun.  Somewhere you could go to at the end of a workday to just mingle, drink and listen to great entertainment.

To match that ambiance is a power team of experts that can only provide the best dishes – led by father-son tandem Chef Gene & Chef Gino Gonzalez .

Here’s my discovery of the new dishes, which they say, does more to mankind than the discovery of a new star.

Salmon & Tuna Carpaccio. Sashimi has always been my favorite, but this time it came in a different presentation, juicier with the sauce held in a spoon, and the added texture with the seaweed and seed toppings made it different enough for me to go back there for more.

Mison Marinated Steak.  Now if anyone tells me that meat should melt in your mouth, this is definitely one of them.  With Umeboshi Dip, Teriyaki Sauce and Onion Salad, it’s a great mixture of flavors. 

Kani Sarada Pasta.  I super love kani (crabstick).  This is like Kani salad but instead of lettuce or cabbage, you get pasta.  It’s light & refreshing and now on my hit list when I go to Seventh High.

Seventh High also comes out with new cocktails.  A lot of research and development is put into coming out with new drinks and food to serve its customers.  Here are some more entrees that are perfect with their line-up of drinks.

Grilled Chicken Wraps.

For a healthy alternative, the grilled chicken wraps can compliment any cocktail.   

Japanese Kani Corn Pizza.  It’s bite-sized, very light and has that oven-baked taste that comes with the melting of cheese in your mouth.  

Almost everything presented had a different twist to its taste.  It’s something that only professionals with passion in their field can come up with. And to be served with such flair in the ambiance of Seventh High is a perfect combination to the senses.

Boneless Lechon with Onion Jam and Asado Sauce.  Who could go wrong with Lechon? But what really got me was the Onion Jam.  More than any lechon sauce, I personally think this is the best compliment to having this dish.  If you’re going to indulge, might as well go all out with this Lechon.

And to cap that all off would be the Chocolate Truffle Sampler.  It has chili.  Sweet and hot at the same time.  And when I said hot … I meant REALLY HOT! Now who wouldn’t want that kind of combination? Your taste buds would go crazy over this. 

We took all that heaven in our table  while listening to premium live entertainment.  That night it was Arpie and the Multivitamins.  They also open the mic for guests who would want to sing their hearts out in the midst of merriment with friends, great food & drinks.

Now that’s an experience you can only get at THE LOUNGE of Seventh High. I’m already lining up all my friends whom I could enjoy life with at this place.  And did I mention, they offer a Wine Buffet at only 800++ pesos? Sounds like plan? Definitely is.

When in Manila, you’ll find that snippets of excitement beyond our city is very much within a few hours away. And when you’re looking to get a slice of crazy Southeast Asia where better to go than to Thailand?  Enter: Bangkok.

COME AND GO AROUND

Bangkok is a great metropolitan pot where culture melts seamlessly with urbanism. What greets you from the plane are the golden glare of temples battling the skyscrapers in grandeur. That’s when you know that you’ve arrived.

The fastest, most efficient way to get to the city proper from the Suvarnabhumi Airport is to take the Airport Express that operates from the basement floor of the arrivals building. Fare from the airport to Phaya Thai, the last station on the AE is only 45 Baht when using the City Line. The other AE line, the Express, traverses the same route as the City Line, only it’s a lot quicker and pricier.

Once in the city, getting around is fairly simple. Arm yourself with a free map from the airport or your hostel and familiarize yourself with the transit system. The light transit system of Bangkok is extensive, with three light rail trains traversing the city: the Airport Express, the BTS Skytrain (with two lines: the Silom and the Sumkhuvit) and the MRT. The AE and the MRT utilize magnetic tokens which you tap on the reader, while the Skytrain’s ticket counters exchange your notes for coins to feed to the machines dispensing cards. Fares for the trains vary according to number of stations travelled and can range from 10 to 40 baht. If you’re ever lost and don’t want to take the cab, walk to the nearest station. If you’re not on a tight budget though, you can take the metered taxi whenever you feel that the route is complicated. The flag-down rate for the taxis is only 35 baht and it increases only by 1 baht for every few hundred meters. Transitbangkok.com allows for easy route planning by telling you the specific stations and bus numbers to board after you have supplied your destination and starting location.

EAT

To say that Bangkok is food heaven would be an understatement. Thai cuisine, which is a distinct fusion between Chinese and Indian gastronomy, is rich with choices and very hard to resist. What’s lovely about Bangkok is that you’re always spoilt with food stalls selling fresh fruits, yummy Thai meals and varieties of iced milk teas literally everywhere you look. And they’re ridiculously cheap too: you can get your fill of a traditional Thai meal for as little as 25 baht! Khao San Road is brimming with eateries and stalls during the day. Indian restaurants also line the surrounding streets. For a truly exotic trip, you might want to sample the various creepy crawlies peddled in Khao San at night: scorpions, ants, worms… take your pick.

For desserts, you can go for the proverbial mango sticky rice or head on over to Swensen’s (branches at Khao San Road and Siam Paragon) for heavenly ice creams and cakes.

SHOP

People are not exaggerating when they say that they are willing to go to Bangkok just to shop. Unlike Hong Kong, which could cost a backpacker an arm and leg, Bangkok provides retail heaven for the bazaar hounds in all of us.

Khao San Road and its nearby artery streets, for one, already make it possible for you to complete all the shopping you need in just one area. Stalls and shops selling everything from casual clothes to swimwear, resort wear, athletic wear and even wedding dresses can be found here. The sidestreets perpendicular to Khao San also feature pack-up stalls selling intricately-done wooden souvenirs and literally hundreds of books. Lonely Planet travel guides cost only 100-700 baht and paperback novels cost as little as 100 baht. We got three travel guides for only 700 baht and the nice vendor even threw in a free French Glamour magazine. Score!

 If you’re in for a bona fide shopping experience, however, you’d want to plan your trip around the weekend just so you can visit the Jatujak (Chatuchak) Weekend Market. The JJ Market is a massive compound with 10,000 stalls peddling everything you can think of: vintage and new clothes, accessories, bags, home décor, rare records, souvenirs, pets – even giant Transformers statues! The market is arranged by zoning sections, which do not necessarily contain one of the same kind of wares. Even if you don’t intend to buy, it is still interesting to see the designs of the stalls themselves. Rather than being normal booths, most stall leasees – especially the hip artistic young ones – have converted their space to mini boutique shops or music stations blaring old-school rock.  Meanwhile, a walk through a special section dedicated entirely to showcasing artworks for sale by local renowned artists makes one forget that she’s in the crowded Jatujak but is instead in a gallery. The market is open from 6 am to 4 pm and is conveniently located near the Kamphaeng Phet MRT station.

If you’re wanting to shop at regular boutiques, then there’s Central World. As the third largest shopping complex on Earth, its home to all the stores you know.

PARTY

Bangkok’s reputation as nightlife capital is not exaggerated: it really goes crazy when the sun goes down.

When looking to party, destination number one will always be Khao San Road. This road, a.k.a. Backpacker Central, has always been popular for its unpretentious clubs and bars even before it became as developed as it is now. Here, people from all over the globe meet up to have fun. In fact, the cult classic novel The Beach by Alex Garland opens with a perfect description of the road by describing it as “a decompression chamber between East and West”.

Booze is everywhere in Khao San: from the nondescript bars that you somehow don’t notice during the day, to the roving drinking carts which serve the free-spirited with beers when they just can’t be bothered to sit down. Every night, Khao San  changes from being a shopping mecca to a throbbing hub of music blaring from all directions. The usually wide road magically becomes an alley thanks to tables and chairs that suddenly dominate the road. People from the bars stop you on the street wearing ridiculous signs that bear words such as: “REALLY STRONG COCKTAILS AND BEER!” Some of the most notable places to get hammered in Khao San are the Shamrock Pub, the Silk Bar, the Hippie de Bar and the Club.

The Shamrock Pub, an Irish-run watering hole, is, to summarize it in one word, loud. Rock music will pound your ears as you enter. Grab a beer and stick around for the awesome local bands that play every night.

Hippie de Bar is laidback and chill but is somewhat secluded, with an almost obscure sign and location which requires one to go to the end of the road and enter a garage that doubles as a bookstore.

The Silk Bar, on the other hand, stands out from its humble neighbors with its sleek, modern façade and tables and chairs that, unlike those of every other place on the road, are not monobloc. Sample their international fusion menu, and drink and dine al fresco from its terrace.

 Lastly, The Club, or the one with the octopus on the sign, is the perfect place to satisfy your drunken urge to just get down and dance. It has a small but intimate dancefloor that wraps around a stage where popstar-looking Thai dancers move alongside hoardes of drunken tourists. What’s great about The Club is that it’s not pretentious: no need to be all made-up; you can just dance the night away to the commercial techno and hip-hop beats. Bonus: they don’t charge a door fee.

Another happening party district is the Royal City Avenue or RCA. The bars and clubs here are trendier than in Khao San Road, which means that you can’t get away with your ratty though indie-hip shirts. The most popular clubs here are the huge Route 66 and the ever-crowded Slim/Flix. RCA bars and clubs are flocked by stylish locals and celebrities rather than backpackers. Admission is free for both.

EXPLORE

A great way to start any day is by immersing yourself in nature. Make a beeline for the Lumphini Park, a wide expanse of greenery right smack in the middle of the metropolis where you you can idle away your time by picnicking, jogging or paddling in the beautiful lake teeming with ducks.

Meanwhile, make it also a part of your itinerary to watch a movie in Thailand. Thai people really take the movie-viewing experience seriously, as testified to by the popular Siam Paragon Cineplex. The Cineplex, which boasts of a spacious lounge area with couches and concierge-like ticket counters, makes one feel as if they were checking into a hotel room. Once inside, ergonomic seats that naturally inclines at the best angle allow you to sink in to an impromptu hour of R&R. Tickets for regular non-3D screenings are at 200 baht each while IMAX tickets can set you back at least 600 baht. In Thailand, every screening begins with a video narrating the life of the King of Thailand. It is expected that everyone stand up to show respect.

Finally, no visit to Bangkok – nay, Thailand – is complete without a visit to the Grand Palace, a huge walled complex that features majestic palaces and temples of gold and varying architectural styles. Admission fee for all the complexes in the compound, including the Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is 350 baht. Signs abound, announcing that people in “immodest” clothing  (including even knee-length shorts and tights) would not be allowed admission. Weirdly, we were allowed in even though we were wearing shirts and not-long skirts. Don’t fret if your outfit isn’t allowed in though: you can always borrow clothes from the information center right inside the complex entrance, but each article of clothing would set you back a refundable 200 baht.

LEAVE… FOR NOW

With all these sights and features that Bangkok has under her belt, it is easy to understand why it remains to be one of the go-to places of people seeking culture and fun. The multi-layered city has become bigger than its media-overhyped sexual sector and has become an ultra hip destination for all the adventurous people all over the world. University of the Philippines UP Alpha Phi Omega Sorority Party at The Lounge: Green With Envy Party

Last week I wanted to transcend to another world of partying and was glad I chose to go here over the other typical bars in the metro. I headed out for a West Coast Wednesday Party at Fever. I need a quick escape from the boredom and stresses of city partying! Fever said it was a special night edition and voila! It was an epic night as the International pop star Allan Pineda Lindo, Jr., popularly known as apl.de.ap of the Grammy Award-winning group Black Eyed Peas was their special surprise guest! Partying on a mid week had never been this cool. I totally felt like I was on a West Coast getaway with the DJs bringing the beach vibe to the city.

Temperature rose as Black Eyed Peas’ Apl de Ap graced the West Coast Party at Fever. He partied with everyone else just like a normal guy, no fame intact. Such a pretty cool guy, not to mention very down to earth.  Do you also know that he recently launched a music library and a computer laboratory at the Holy Angel University (HAU) and at the Sapangbato National High School (SNHS) where he attended before migrating to the United States?

apl.de.ap was born and raised in Pampanga before an American family adopted him and brought him to the US when he was only 14. He initiated those projects out of his vision to provide students in his hometown easier access to information technology. He has never forgotten where he came from and has always been proud of his roots. His songs deal with our culture and our country itself. He once mentioned that he likes coming back to the Philippines because of his countrymen’s warmth that keeps him grounded.

It was always a breather to see apl.de.ap visiting the Philippines once again.  He is a globally successful artist and Pinoy at heart, apl served to be the olive on every woman’s martini  in Fever that night. He sported that genuine smile all throughout the night.  Fever may be crowded but it’s noticeable that their service was neat as they were all fast and efficient. I cannot even count how many times they changed my dirty liquour glass for a clean one. Exquisite service.

I wasn’t anymore surprised that Fever attracts the same beautiful people because behind it is the usual famous kingpins of the Manila scene:  Tim Yap, Stephen Ku, GP Reyes, and JM Rodriguez. Fever at Sofitel is the perfect venue for a quick evening getaway. Merely 20 minutes away from Makati,  you are surrounded by the luxurious and natural surroundings of the hotel. No doubt that it is the ultimate party setting for a club as hot as Fever.

Fever boasts of a winsome and amiable setting, semi-gothic, cloaked, dramatic chandeliers, private boudoirs, crystal beads, and touches of Baroque-style décor made the lounge ultra-chic and beautiful. Black Eyed Peas Apl.de.ap at Fever Lounge Sofitel Hotel for West Coast Wednesday Party

The rain was pouring hard and classes were suspended but my friends and I were excited as we headed to Sofitel’s Fever for REDiculous Tuesdays.

We braved the downpour and the flooded streets of Manila and arrived around nine-ish and there were already some people already inside, getting a head start on their Tuesday nightlife! 

Fever’s Interior is amazing. As Dru, Blender Tuesday’s promoter, put it, it is very obvious that the bar is running under a hotel.   

Soon, it was apparent that no rain or work the next day could ruin the party as people started coming in. By 11:00, the party was in full swing. The open bar for rhum coke and vodka sprite didn’t hurt either.

REDiculous Tuesdays at Fever Luxe Lounge Dance Club and Bar: Best Nightlife Party Places in Manila

Last July 29, 2011, Victoria Court celebrated their 25^th Anniversary at Club Manor in Eastwood. The culminating event of 25 years of hard work featured a fashion show, an HIV awareness campaign and of course, fine women, fine music and fine alcohol.

Hosted by 89.9’s The Boys Night Out Sam YG, Tony Toni and Slick Rick, the show opened with the band Soul Airplay/n, led by Ira Cruz and Glaiza de Castro, and hiphop group Dirty Room Productions.

As part of their campaign for HIV/AIDS awareness, huge screens played videos of advocates and HIV victims standing up for what they believe in or sharing their experiences about living with HIV or caring for someone infected. Famous people in the video were Rep. Risa Hontiveros, Sam YG, Tony Toni and Slick Rick, Film Director Treb Montreras, Fashion Designer Twinkle Ferraren and known advocate & writer Ana Santos. It was the result of strong voices backing up one cause. Strong voices with one message: Be aware. Get tested.

Shortly after, Managing Director Atticus King welcomed the guests and played a video that showcased Victoria Court’s new room designs. The fashion show was very unique. I commend the whole VC team who put the Victoria Court experience into Club Manor. They laid out their top thematic rooms in the club, complete with backdrop, furniture and accessories.

All the rooms were hid behind a black curtain and were unveiled one by one as the models and designers walked the ramp. The pole-dancing numbers were pretty entertaining. Talk about grip and flexibility!

Each designer represented Victoria Court’s top rooms where they got inspiration from for each of their designs. The featured designers were: Barbara Gonzalez, Jona Ballaran, Lizanne Cua, Twinkle Ferraren and Dita Sandico Ong.

The night ended with loud-banging music and more alcohol. Seeing these pretty models dance and move their bodies to the beat was a delight. Definitely fun. Victoria Court couldn’t have celebrated their 25 years any better. So When In Manila, feel the distinction of making love and get a taste of Victoria Court’s thematic first class suites. Remember, at Victoria Court the Customer is always King.

From July 25 to December 25, 2011, Victoria Court is giving free suites to the lucky 25^th guest every 25^th of the month in all their branches.
