When in Manila and yearning for fine desserts….. I’ll just go straight to the point ok? I’m sort of in a hurry right now.. I’m in a middle of an ecstatic sugar high! OOOhh Yeah! You have to seriously, seriously taste the gelatos and French macarons at Bar Dolci!

A lot of my friends have been asking me to try out their gelatos and macarons because they’ve been telling me that Bar Dolci‘s macarons  are no match with my then favorite brand (which I prefer not to tell). hihihihi

So last Sunday I’ve invited a long time friend of mine Dra. Gigi Samson and fellow writer Paula delos Reyes who also happens to be big fans of Bar Dolci to join me and buddy Badeth on our 1st Bar Dolci experience!

Bar Dolci is a gelateria cafe which makes gelatos, macarons and savory items which I may say are “beyond compare!” 

Bar Dolci only opened its doors last  December 2010 yet they already have been noted as the top gelato spot in Manila! It has received  countless raves from top magazines, blogs and practically every person that I know  who has tried it! I even heard stories of people literally going wild when their favorite flavor is out of stock!

I must admit…. I’m a fool for macarons! As soon as I entered its ultra hip store, I was stunned with what I saw! It was like an apparition!

Let me tell you more about the fine food and experience….

As we entered the resto, I was impressed with its now bigger place as compared 2-3yrs ago during my 1st visit when they were still located along Maginhawa St. The interiors definitely looked more chic with its traditional-meets-modern design, artsy walls and fancy chandeliers! Their staff greeted us so warmly and treated us as honored guests! I would have to say how personally impressed I was with Sir PJ Lanot (one of the owners) for being very confident with his menu. I actually asked him to recommend their specialties but he told us to just ask whatever we fancy! Hmmm

Without further adieu once again, here are  our drool worthy photos……

We started the feast with their SISIG Tacos:

 - 10 pcs of  meaty Sisig filled crunchy mini tacos with loads of vegies topped with lots of cheese!! The mango cubes made it taste even more special I believe! An ideal starter to tickle your taste buds!!

Since Shai is a self confessed pasta lover, she ordered 2 pasta dishes that time ..

Spicy Tuyo Pesto (165php) -  fresh pesto, seafood and a whole piece of spicy tuyo on the side! Honestly, it’s the best pesto dish I’ve tasted! Deliriously good!

 Sisig Carbonara (165php) – Ideal for all you Sisig and white sauce lovers out there! Pinoy meets Italiano! Whoever thought about this is a genius! It was a hit with  the boys! I liked it as well but not as much as the pesto dish!

Porkchop Tonkatsu with Longanisa Rice (175php) – Breaded pork cutlets served with sweet Teriyaki Sauce and Vigan Longanisa fried rice!  I’m not really a big fan of Tonkatsu because they’re usually very tough and dry however, I was really surprised by this particular one since it was really thick yet remained very tender! This is what I call deep fried to perfection! Thumbs up!

Ham and Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breasts  – Their very own version of Cordon Bleu! Since I’m a big big fan of Cordon Bleu, I was soooo happy when Frank ordered this! It was very tasty of course! Honestly, I wanted to snatch it from  him and eat it all up! (I’ll do it next time!) ahihihi

Bagnet and Tofu Stack-O with Mushroom Rice (225php) – Sliced blocks of tofu with chunks of crispy pork belly cooked in soy sauce and vinegar served with shitake mushroom rice and aoili. This was the one I ordered for aside from being a tofu fanatic, I was very impressed with its presentation!

Kare-Kareng Bagnet -  Crispy slabs of Ilocos Bagnet on a bed our all-time favorite thick Kare-Kare sauce and vegies!   I’m completely lost for words! A culinary masterpiece indeed!

For our sweet endings we ordered 2 of their most popular desserts….

Chunky Choco Tempura – deep fried tempura batter coated choco wafer bar with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream! I loved the union of these entirely different desserts! The warm crispy choco tempura complimented well with the cold creamy ice cream! It was well balanced! Bravo!

Tablea Cheesecake -  Frank and I found a new favorite indeed! Being big fans or our local tablea, we just love everything about it! It wasn’t very sweet at all! It had the right amount of bitter sweet taste!  From the temperature down to the texture of the crust…. we’re totally blown away!

PINO is indeed FINE FILIPINO FOOD!

From the interiors, the fine service, the world class quality menu and the artistic plating………. I really am lost for words!

PINO is a restaurant which all Pinoys should experience and be proud of!  No doubt about it!

Truly one of the BEST dining experiences I ever had for it made me feel more proud of my roots! I remember seeing genuine smiles and sparkles on our eyes as we went home that night. This was indeed the highlight of our weekend!

 Are you ready?

A little background: Since my mom stayed in Tokyo during her college years (she majored in Japanese language at Tokyo University), I grew up being very familiar with all things Japanese. Making sushi is quite common in the house as well as frying tempura from time to time however, to tell you honestly,  I haven’t experienced dining the traditional way that’s why I’m so excited to do this feature! Also, Japanese dishes are all neatly and artfully plated so I can’t wait to see the result of our 1st Japanese cuisine shoot!

Joining us this week is our blogger friend Ms. Ana Gonzales of Anagon Collection. She’s currently one of the prominent names in local fashion blogging. A really cool down-to-earth kid! Frank and I find her to be very inspiring and an ideal role model for this generation. We’re so glad she said yes to our humble invitation!

Anyway, moving on with our Japanese feast at the highly acclaimed  Sugi Restaurant, allow me to guide you through this photo story to show you the highlights of this week’s date….

And then it was time to meet Chef Nakamura! He was kinda shy but was really warm and nice! He arranged the table in a very traditional Japanese way for us! Thank you Chef!

THE STARS OF THE SHOW….

Kaiware Kani Salad (250php) -  Radish sprouts and crab meat with your choice of dressing

as for the dressing, they recommend Japanese mayo and  vinegar with sesame seeds

Assorted Sashimi (750php) – An array of skillfully sliced fresh picks made up of salmon, tuna, blue marlin, mackerel, eel and kani placed on a bed of fresh shredded radish garnished with lemon and wasabi!

Ebi Tempura (390php) – Deep fried crispy fresh all prawn tempura! Best enjoyed while hot! It wasn’t so warm by the time we started eating ‘coz it took us time to take photos. It  tasted very good nonetheless! =) We loved it!

Since Ana is a Vegan, she enjoyed  the crispy vegies a lot!

Salmon Aburi Maki (530php) -  Sushi roll with ebi fry topped with slightly seared salmon. This I may say, was the one I liked  the most!! Highly recommended!

Wagyu Ishiyaki Steak  (620php)  – Wagyu beef and vegetables grilled on hot stone on your table.  Served with 2 kinds of sauce. The meat was really fresh and tender!! Frank loved this a lot!

the Sashimi was super fresh, melts in your mouth! It was very soft  and tender!  We were just a little “bitin” with the ideal beverage to make it more balanced. I believe it would have been better if we were served with some tea or the traditional Japanese sake to wash down the aftertaste and for the ultimate experience.

From the ambiance, the staff and food… it was indeed a fine dining experience for us! =) We loved everything especially the Salmon Aburi Maki! We hope we can experience the tatami room next time!  I heard customers may use it for a minimum consumable order of 3,000php. Honestly, we were just a little “bitin” with the drinks. All in all, as to what their General Manager Ms. Ines  Cabarrus promised, we really had a great experience!  Durex has received special permission for this campaign from the authorities because they are not just selling condoms but promoting safe sex education, the Brand Manager claims. They are not fighting over the RH Bill either. They just import rubber…and distribute and market it….and its an open economy. Their closest competitors can’t promise the quality of safety that Durex does. Hence, the claim to public health. There’s nothing political about it, nothing religious……but putting the choice in the hands of the Individuals.

I still don’t understand. How can a campaign remain apolitical with CARLOS CELDRAN as its brand ambassador? Also, will the beloved public figure of Celdran not get tainted by going commercial through his association with Durex?

The prude in me decided that perhaps it is these minimal moments in a city’s popular avenues and hang-outs that finally determine the history of its PEOPLE and culture. I witnessed the quiet ribbon-cutting of Durex’s SEXHIBIT by Carlos Celdran, entered the sex-museum tent hoisted in the vicinity of pubs and bars like Kiss, Pussycats, Rogues, Heckle and Jeckle and what not….and learnt in half an hour the unspeakable facts of the S word that no text book or treatise, family or barkada can possibly talk about as comprehensively.

When In Manila, the natural outcome is to celebrate with the ‘World-famous Philipino brand’ SAN MIG ! Next year they even plan to produce special Oktoberfest Beer.

 As I said, Oktoberfest is really a celebration of the love-story of the German Crown Prince and Princess Terese who wed way back in 1810 and celebrated an extended wedding where all citizens were invited to endless drinking and most lavish and rich food. No doubt, Filipinos have loved the concept! Aren’t they as crazy (or more) for Beer, Music and Eating out as the Germans! I find it intellectually stimulating—how every culture has its greek god Bacchus worshipping version. HoLI festival in India for my Indian friends is similar. ‘Do crazy things Day’ kind of affair…. and its a class-less , friendly, family affair, not a clandestine get-high pub crawl. At least it was not meant to be. 

I was told by a German, ”Remember– for us — BEER IS ‘FOOD’! ” So in that spirit and given the lovely location of the fest, I am gonna take my family to get a taste of German festivities right here in Manila (Sunday morning). BTW the Filipino staff dressed in Bavarian Costumes looked so cute :) and the fair garden setting with its benches and tables is a total ambience!

When in Manila and craving for some authentic chicken inasal and other Ilonggo favorites, our newly found food haven will surely provide you with the real deal!

Your weekly epicures are on the loose once again and this time, Frank and I were joined by his niece Badeth and “bestestfriend” Mitch who also happens to be my closest “amigas” so I feel really fortunate that our “barkada” was once again complete! Woot! woot!

As you all  know, inasal chicken restaurants have been popping out like mushrooms allover the metro, each claiming to serve authentic Ilonggo cuisine. What I find very special about this place though, is that their ingredients are all imported from Iloilo!

The whole idea according to one of its owners Mark Tanlu, is to bring the taste of traditional barrio style Ilonggo cooking right here in Manila! From the meats, the freshly made molo wrappers and right down to the local yellow coloring which they call “kalawag” are all shipped from Iloilo. My friends, you can’t get more authentic than this! This is definitely something which you foodies ought to experience!

Frank, Mark and Me!

As our orders were prepared, we had the chance to meet the owners namely Mark Tanlu and cousin Glenn Gustilo. Mark told us so many things about Ilonggo cuisine and culture as well! How nice it is to learn and discuss about the food which you are actually enjoying! Food can tell a thousand tales about its place of origin. It’s more than just filling your tummies and tickling your taste buds. It’s more of a “culture thing” and I have high regard to  people who wanna preserve its authenticity that’s why I’m so impressed with its owners! Mark really knows his inasal! According to him from the root word “asal” meaning “tuhog,” inasal simply means “tinuhog” or skewered. He even educated us about the authentic Ilonggo way of cutting the chicken as well as tips on how to correctly grill chicken! It’s not as easy as it looks! You really need a lot of practice to master this skill!

…. ok ok, we won’t keep you  guys waiting! Here are our recommendations!

Chicken Inasal (72php/pc, 86php with rice and iced tea)   – Mark said that  most marinades for Chicken Inasal share the same recipe but what I like most about theirs is that the meat remained very juicy because they have mastered on how to cook it the proper way! My buddy Frank said that unlike other  Inasals he has tasted, he found  this one to actually have more meat in it as opposed to the others where there seems to be more bones that meat. Great quality for less the cost!

Molo Soup (39php) - The best molo soup I’ve tasted so far due to its freshness and subtlety. Mark and his team are the ones who make their own Ilonggo molo wrappers to assure its quality and freshness! I must admit, I’m not a big fan of soups and stews but I immediately fell in-love with this one! It had no overpowering tastes. It made me remember how my grandma would serve warm bowls of soup along with a warm loving hug whenever I was under the weather.  Comfort food at its finest! We all loved it! And for only 39 pesos? Wow!! Speechless!

Arroz Valenciana (49php) – This I may say was the one I’ve been most curious about. Glutenous rice cooked with meat and liver chunks, locally available spices, green peas and  raisins. Their Iloilo grown turmeric which they call “Kalawag” (yellow coloring) gives it its yellow brilliance! It reminded me about mom’s recipe. She used to make this every Christmas day when I was a kid. I like its simplicity! The taste is superb! I recommend you eat it while warm. Mark said he wanted to keep it as simple and as authentic as possible like how the locals would prepare it. It reminded me about my favorite Spanish Paella which I cook at home. The only difference is that, paella uses saffron instead of turmeric, huge pieces of meat/seafood  and cooked in a special paella pan. I appreciate this soooo much!

Grilled Hito (90php/pc, 105php with rice and iced tea) - The reason why I rarely eat Hito (catfish) is because the ones I’ve previously tasted were  very slimy and had an odd fishy aftertaste. To my surprise, it was decently prepared! It was very flavorful! It had no fishy aftertaste and the meat was very soft and tender! The whole gang liked it a lot! Very different from the usual… a must try as well! =)

I remember chatting like crazy that night! Laugher and cheer filled the air making the experience even more memorable! How nice it is to be yourself and be with the people who truly accept and understand you for who you are… to be in a place where you don’t have to worry about what you should wear or how you should act… and to be welcomed and entertained by people who are passionate about food and  the preservation of their culture.

Oh yeah! Truly we were at the right place and time! We were all surprised because we lost track of time! We dined for more than 3 hours! waaaaaaaaahhh!!!

How To Get There:

It’s really easy!  From Robinson’s Galleria, take a bus bound to Cainta and tell the conductor to drop you off the the RCBC bank right before The Ever Gotesco Mall along Ortigas Extension. From there, you will easily find the Riverside Arcade 2.  The place I may say isn’t really fancy but clean and presentable enough for casual “cowboy”  eaters. Invite your friends and family and have a heck of a time! You can definitely be yourself here! The place is ideal for everyone who would like to experience the taste of Iloilo!

I find Kusina Ilonggo to be very promising!  We all feel very positive about this! I won’t be surprised to see branches popping out soon! =)

Manchego Cheese Nori – Imported Manchego cheese fried in thick beer- batter and finally rolled on a Nori, with a strawberry & chocolate sauce on the side.

The taste of the Manchego cheese used is offbeat, not too strong yet slightly salty. Averagely-creamy with the slightest piquancy.  The dish is without the characteristic aftertaste of a sheep’s milk, what makes it rather special is its resemblance to churros.  Told the chef that the addition of the strawberry sauce was a good move. I tried mixing the 2 sauce together and my palate just went crazy with this dish.

Chicken Carnitas – Bite size carnitas with chicken and tomato-mango salsa, garnished with leeks and red capsicum.

Carnitas means ‘little meats’ and is traditionally fried then braised. Though in this dish, I asked and found out that chicken strips were sautéed, results are just as tasty. I’ve always been delighted with carnitas; they’re beautiful to cook, beautiful to serve. They seem to whip up one’s extra-sensory experience. This is a little like fajitas but isn’t grilled and has a more delicate flavour to it.  The aroma of the carnitas truly wafted throughout Axis and I just knew we were in for something good and boy, were we! The dish was cooked just long enough to crisp the exterior of the meat. Makes you feel like asking for your own cup of rice as it’s great on its own. The meat was really tender and perfectly seasoned, however they can try to double up the spices with this dish for those looking for that extra kick.

Nacho Supreme – Classic Crispy tortilla chips topped with Chili con carne, salsa, olives and jalapeno.

A very common Mexican appetizer, the king of all bar party foods…so what’s next? Their portion is a huge layer of fried corn tortilla chips layered on a plate with toppings usually falling off during its trek from the bar’s kitchen down to our table. Good bar food to me is almost always synonymous with greasy while exceptional bar food must never overdo the grease factor. Their nachos are gratifying, topped off with the generous amount of that slathered thick cheese. The grease from the cheese is also nowhere to be found, undeniably a dish that pairs great with any of the many selection of beers they have on the bar list.
