One lazy Saturday, I had a chance to pamper myself and avail of Studio Zen’s haircut, blow-dry, Bonacure hair repair treatment, foot spa, and manicure and pedicure. Would you believe, it only took a couple of hours to finish everything because a team of beauty experts worked on me simultaneously.

First, one of their professional stylists, Mr. Pat Abog, assessed my hair so I can get the proper treatment, instead of simply whisking me away to the shampoo area like in other salons. Studio Zen makes sure to know their clients before the actual treatment begins.  Some of their stylists have even trained in the world-renowned Vidal Sassoon Academy in Shanghai, China.

The Bonacure Moisture Kick treatment began right after my hair was washed. I liked that the stylist chose the products that were appropriate for my dry and color-treated hair. This specific treatment is supposed to promote color retention and protect the hair structure. After the product application came the steam procedure, which took around 15 minutes. During the steaming process, one of the salon’s staff gave me a relaxing back massage. All the while, I was getting both manicure and foot spa treatments. I felt like a princess for feeling so pampered!

While my tired feet soaked in a footbath, a nail technician started to prep my fingernails for the manicure. I was seated right beside the sterilizing equipment where they clean the nail tools so I felt very comfortable with having my nails done there. The nail technician meticulously prepped my nails and cuticle before applying some fancy polish. I chose a classic red hue to flatter my fingers. The salon has a nice selection of nail polish—with brands ranging from Sally Hansen to Orly.

As I was getting a manicure, my feet enjoyed a soothing foot spa where I was able to get a good foot scrub and massage. The scrub felt especially nice since the product had some peppermint scent that felt cool on my legs. For me, a foot spa is the ultimate way to spoil yourself. Nothing beats getting a fantastic foot rub and feeling your soft and smooth feet after. To top it off, I got the perfect pedicure to match the color of my fingernails.

After my Bonacure treatment, Mr. Pat suggested that I get a haircut to bring some life to my limp and straight hair. He did nothing drastic; just clipped off some strands here and there, and gave my `do some much-needed layers. He even gave it more body as he dried my hair.

A couple of hours later, I left Studio Zen with a big smile on my face and an improved new me. Even fellow writer, Jariss, got a new look. She came in with long, wavy hair, and went out with a cropped and edgy hairstyle.

When In Manila, semestral break is one that I’ve been longing for! After weeks of being swamped with work, typing till the wee hours of the morning, I believe it’s time to unwind and relax. Living in the south, and having lived here all my life, I was looking for an activity that wouldn’t entail planning, or driving for hours just to get to do something– a quick fix to my relaxation woes, When In Manila. This is how I came across SPArkle. 

SPArkle is located along West Service Road, a quick drive from where I live. It was the first Monday of this semester’s break and a couple of friends and I were off to have our very first spa party.

Upon arriving at SPArkle, we were very pleasantly surprised. Despite the noise and chaos that the service road brought, the spa was a very peaceful place. Everything from the lighting, to the colors used, to the music, was soothing. There was great attention to detail, there were even rose petals scattered along the stairs for decor. Very pretty! 

Up on the second floor, SPArkle has their massage and treatment area. This floor was even more relaxing than the first one! At this point, all of us were just excited.

My friend, Cheddar, got her very first Diamond Peel. This took about two hours. We were told that this was a machine peel (and the diamonds were actually in the machine, hence the name) that lightens and cleanses skin. After the treatment, she came out fresher than ever.

Camille, my sister, tried their Sculpting Wrap Treatment with a Slimming massage. This entails lying on a heating blanket while getting slimming massages and having treatment formulas applied on you. After this, you get a foil wrap which traps the heat for the body. This lasted a good hour and a half.

We were told that you’d lose about an inch on your waistline after five treatments. In the meantime, however, my sister just loved how relaxing everything was. 

Joelle, another friend of mine, had the Magic Flame Soothing Candle Touch Therapy with Hand Reflexology. Ate explained that this was a hand massage done with Massage Flame wax. This soothes and relaxes as well as helps with blood circulation. After the whole treatment, you then are given heated mittens. This took about an hour.

She almost fell asleep during the hand massage—that relaxing. 

I got my very first Underarm-cial plus a free waxing. For those of you wondering, this is actually a “facial” for your armpit. This is for underarm brightening and also to get rid of those stubborn ingrown hair. They even gave me a steam treatment (just for my underarms!) so that my pores would open up. I was told that depending on the skin, it takes about two to five sessions to really brighten up your armpits. This took about 30-45 minutes.

All the treatments were great and very relaxing, though a very, very big plus was that their staff were all so friendly and nice. The atmosphere was not only soothing but also comfortable.

Nobody wants to be pressured when it comes to beautifying oneself, agree? For all the treatments, the nurse (Amie) walked me though what the process would feel like, what to expect, and the do’s and don’ts etc. All throughout the procedure she kept an open communication with me and I barely felt any discomfort.

DIODE LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Hello Laser, Goodbye Razor. There are many factors that go into determining which laser hair removal clinic is right for you so make sure you do your homework before you choose. It doesn’t end there. You have to decide which type of laser treatments would you rather opt for, the IPL or the DIODE. As having done some research and briefing, I was enlightened on why Diode Laser Hair Removal is better than IPL. Currently there are lots of laser treatments out in the market and it’s hard to distinguish which aesthetic clinic can deliver the best results. IPL or Intense Pulsed Light. This is NOT a laser; it’s a light, which tries to imitate the strength of a laser. While Diode Laser is versatile because of its wavelike design and can treat a diverse range of skin types. I was given the pain free Diode LHR and did it hurt? Hell no. Not a bit of sting neither an ant bite sensation was felt. Define Painless Fashion. It was actually ticklish to the core and if you happen to have sensitive underarms, well, good luck resisting that big T! Also, my underarms did not turn any red at all after the treatment, even until the day after. No burning sensation was present either.

I am on my 4^th week now and results were visibly superb as early as the 1^st week. I was able to finally ditch my razor too, whew! I hate them as shaving makes you prone to having underarms with chicken skin ya’ know. Lucky me for my underarms are still perfectly fine. After 1 week, my hair started shedding and I can even pull the tiny hair out with my own fingers. Do note that results may be peculiar but it also calls for proper maintenance. You have to seek another consultation after a month to know the vital steps necessary to take on.

Nail-a-holics Nail Salon & Spa and PAWS Teams Up with Animalistic Nails

Did you know that our hands and feet are the most used and stressed parts of our body? So When In Manila, I thought that there’d be no better way to thank our hands and feet, than to pamper them and spend a whole day at Nails Studio & Day Spa.

Our feet do the walking and our hands do the typing every single day.  I feel that it’s just right to give them a relaxing treat but without having to spend that much.  Then I heard about this Nails Studio & Day Spa in Tomas Morato owned and managed by a couple, Dianne Siao and Charles Tan. They supposedly offer the best service at the most affordable prices. After walking around Quezon City all day, this was the day that my friend and I ultimately decided to pamper our aching feet.

As soon as we stepped into the spa, we smelled the pampering green tea and peppermint scents. My attention was especially captured by this “free wifi” sign (Yes! we can tweet, browse and check our Facebook page while enjoying the service). Furthermore, spa goers have a chance to watch movies showing throughout the spa. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, and we were more than excited to sit our tired backs and aching feet on those lazy boy couches to get started.

I had their Signature Spa Pedicure (500Php), for a totally spoiling regime that included a scrub, spa, mask, and pedicure. The treatment started with the foot spa to invigorate my tired feet, moving onto the hand and foot mask. I have to admit, I used to think that masks were just for the face but now they have that for hands and feet too!). They had me choose which scent I’d like to try but the sheer amount of choices overwhelmed me, so I had to ask my nail technician for her recommendation. My ever so smart beauty consultant recommended I try their “best sellers,” the Lavender Mint and Vanilla.

I opted for the Lavender Mint which she started applying to my legs and feet, at which point I heard this cute little girl in the spa asking: “Mom why is she painting her legs?” I had to giggle as I realized that this too was my first time to encounter the foot mask. As my therapist “painted” legs and feet, this amazing aroma filled up the entire spa. The mint aroma of Lavender had this cooling and healing effect that got to me right away! The foot mask was left to dry for about 10 minutes followed by a scrub, then, for the main event, a pedicure with an added foot massage and a foot wrap before we got started on the polish. Yup, all that and then some! 

I love OPI nail polish, which is what they used, and it was a total delight to see all the different OPI shades they had to choose from. My friend loves blue and got the midnight blue while I wanted to have red carpet nails, so I had to go for shades of crimson red. 

We had a day of scrumptious treatment for our hands and feet… I say scrumptious because I’m currently staring at my colorful nails and they look like yummy candies I just want to munch on… Anyway, I strongly suggest that you pamper your feet and hands as well!

As much as we care about our face, hair and skin, I think it’s about time we showed our hardworking feet and hands some lovin’ that they deserve!  It’s time to start the hand and foot revolution that wont hurt your budget neither!

NAIL Boutique is a quaint but surprisingly chic nail salon located right at the heart of the Phil. Heart Centre in Quezon City. Just look for these 2 distinct establishments (so you won’t get lost) when you’re in the area: The Sulo Hotel, next comes Shakey’s and there’s your lucky find, NAIL Boutique. This is a nail spa & salon born out of love for vanity from four female entrepreneurs. Ms. Desiree Morales, as one of the co-owners was a charming host and she allowed me to experience the luxury of pampering they claim to offer without burning a hole in my pocket. She recommended for me to try their signature treatment called The Luxury hand/foot spa on my visit. She was professional to deal with, even called my appointment with the salon as our ‘date‘. Sweet. She was there throughout the treatment session, checking on everything and making sure everything is smooth sailing. I wish all owners are like her, very hands-on.

Service. Staff. Surroundings.

In Nail Boutique, you’d ask yourself which one would you prefer- quality vs. quantity? Nail Boutique currently offers ORLY, MISA and  Kleancolor polishes. I do not need to elaborate much on ORLY as it is already a staple with most nail salons. How ‘bout MISA? MISA Nail Polish is highly recommended for pregnant women. They’re free of formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP (a petroleum product that has been proven to pass through breast milk).  Lastly, this is where I’ve found out about Kleancolor.  Desiree mentioned to me that Kleancolor is one of Kris Aquino’s top fashion picks with regards to her nail care. Well, another product vouched by the Queen of All Media & Endorsements… something to pique my interest again.

They may have limited selections with the brands of their nail polish shades but I think what matters most is that as a customer I was given a brief background on each of the products that they actually use. Something that helps a customer to decide easily. Simplifying and basically starting fresh, they have  launched a few new products/services namely, Kleancolor Cracked Nails, Nail Art Stickers & Eyelash Extensions (human hair extensions only).

Nail Boutique is whimsical and funky, but when it comes to the nails, they mean serious business. The amiable greeting and the soft pastel pink walls has you relaxing even before your toes touch the warm and bubbly water of their spa chair. Purple, grey, stripes- who would think they’d go well together? The temptuous plush chairs and colourful vintage decors gave a more defined look to it. They’ll keep you off your toes with options ranging from the regular mani/pedi to the ultimate spa treatment. If toes are not your primary concern and your focus is on your nails, Nail Care & Spa offers high-quality nail care, cuticle maintenance and massage to accommodate every need you may have.

Moisture wrap, Moisturizing Massage, Callus Removal, Hand & Foot scrub = The Luxury Treatment.  Staffs were pleasant, make eye contact and always ask for the particulars. How I wanted my nails trimmed, cuticles to be touched or not and the nitty gritty of basically how I want my nails to be cared for.

Like a candy store where sugary temptations tease from every corner, Nail Boutique’s Kleancolor shades are difficult to resist. One of their senior staff, Gemma makes it uncomplicated for customers. She can tell in an instant which colours suits you best and she knows every shade by heart, impressive.  Kleancolor quality on the other hand is spot-on. Opacity in one coat, smooth application and with trend-setting colours to choose from.

I once again settled for my stick-with-red-shades comfort zone but they managed to convince me to try their Cracked Nail Polish. I am not a fan of it you see, but seeing the results changed my mind in an instant. They have taken utmost care in applying this as I have found out that they’ve did their homework on how to apply and achieve those so-called perfect cracks. Knowing myself as very scrutinizing, I witnessed before my eyes on how the temperature’s surroundings, method and amount of application can actually be major factors in achieving those cracks according to your preference.

Ever wondered why they named it Nail Boutique?  They sell RTW (from Bangkok) clothes, cute pairs of shoes like rubi (from Singapore), and Graftobian Cosmetics. After a week of hard work When In Manila, it’s best to relax and treat oneself for a day at the spa. Here at the heart of the bustling city of Fort Bonifacio, Taguig is where I found haven.

The place looks very contemporary but stays true to the nature of a spa, its very cozy and relaxing. I love that they have plenty and spacious treatment rooms.

I go over their brochure and there’s a lot to choose from; it goes from the typical reflexology and aromatherapy massage to their signature spa rituals. 

They offered me their newest treatment – Baborganic Snowflakes Candle Touch Rituals. As explained to me by my therapist, this treatment will run for 90minutes and will have a combination of body scrub and body massage. She begun with a simple stretching to awaken my tired muscles, then applied the candle wax snowflakes all over my skin. These snowflakes feels cold and it acts as scrubbers which is left on my skin for a couple of minutes then wiped off with a warm towel. Then for the body massage, my therapist used a warm wax that totally soothes my body; the wax smells nice like a perfume and its not greasy. To top it off crystal wands were used to target my stress points and that was a major plus in this treatment. It was a very unique and relaxing experience, I will recommend this especially to those who want a one-of-a-kind massage treatment, but don’t be surprised with the price because its definitely worth it.

When In Manila, the bridge that unites 50 businesses to 150 bloggers happens only here at Blogapalooza!

Blogapalooza aims to connect big and small businesses to the online community. Blogapalooza send invites to influential bloggers of different genres, social/media influence-rs and businesses that have something cool to offer, put them all in a room and VOILA! The connection starts there!

Businesses will have to present their products/services in the most unique way they can, preferably without slides to bring out the creativity within them. A maximum of 5 minutes per presenter is allotted. Bloggers on the other hand, get to see, feel or even experience the products/services/others FIRSTHAND. They also receive promotional items/freebies from the presenters. This way, they are free to blog about the experience, the event, the details of the businesses. Brilliant and simple isn’t it?

I was one of the lucky people to be able to witness the launch of this awaited event organized by Vince Golangco, founder of WhenInManila himself, on September 17, 2011.

As early as 6am, Vince, together with some staff were already at the back-doors of Fully Booked at Bonifacio High Street, unloading the repacked “freebie/loot bag” for the expected 150 bloggers and getting the place ready for the crowds.

Located at the 5th floor of Fully Booked, I had the chance to help out and carry these loot bags up to Fully Booked’s Top Shelf function room , and let me tell you that those loot bags were the biggest I’ve EVER SEEN!

Hannah Villasis of Flair Candy, Cheryl Golangco, the Little Running Teacher and Philippe Villareal of Yajapa were also there to help out.

The function room was set up with about 10 tables for the business booths near the entrance of the room.

The whole function room had a FREE wi-fiaccess courtesy of some friends of When In Manila.

Right next to the registration and right when you enter the Fully Booked function room, you’ll immediately see the giant photo-wall. The photo-wall was very personalized in that all the bloggers’ URL addresses, of the 150 bloggers, were included.

The Registration was located just in front of the elevator. Pre-printed name tags numbered accordingly was already prepared to facilitate faster registration. The first 50 bloggers to register got to choose additional items like shirts and water bottles from Aquabest, umbrellas from HTC, notebooks, pens and others from some business presenters. PLUS, they get to have their numbers included for the raffle TWICE! The name tags also entitles the bearer to a 10% discount for the day at Fully Booked, BGC.

From the blank space, chairs were arranged in 10′s to avoid overcrowding. At the right side the sound system/media booth was located.

 A projector screen was also set up at the stage beside the Blogapalooza backdrop.

At around 10 am, bloggers started arriving and signing up for registration. Some mingled with other bloggers, took photos with the POLECATS and tried to spin and get up their pole.

12 pm, Lunch was served for all attendees courtesy of Italianis. Drinks were sponsored by Aquabest and Healthy First. Bloggers started lining up at the counter to get their share of food. Vince Golangco personally recommended the drink provided by Healthy First specifically the mango-lychee flavor. Too bad I was not able to try it because it ran out of stock too fast. Although I had the chance to taste the carrot-strawberry and the carrot-four seasons flavor, which I can say is yummy! :)

Exactly 1 pm, everyone was settled on their seats. Tweets with the hash tag #Blogapalooza started to flood twitter. Thanks to Chef Tonio for the Free internet access. Officially, Vince Golangco opened the event with a few reminders for everyone. He also thanked the sponsors and the people who contributed to the event itself. After he called the presenters up on stage one by one. Like what was agreed, 5 minutes was given to each presenters, in that span of time, they should be able to get the attention of the audience and convince them to write something for what they have presented.

Out of 50 businesses, 30 of them gave their presentations, from antivirus to gadgets to food to quality Filipino products, surely the bloggers were enriched with new updates to blog about. Here are the preview of presenters as seen on Blogapalooza.wheninmanila.com.

1. Avira Antivirus

Avira antivirus has been on the market for 25 years now and has entered Philippines just last year. They believe that without quality, no superiority can happen, thus encouraging customers to avail of premium antivirus software instead of settling to free ones. They campaign for intenet freedom and can only be acquired with premium software.

2. Lay Bare 

Lay Bare talked about the the advantages of waxing over shaving. They presented drawings to make the audience see the difference, they surely had creative minds prepare for their presentation. 

3. 360 Fitness Club

360 Fitness Club is circuit training facility that promotes faster and more effective means of workout. Complete workout consists of 5 levels and is to be completed in a span of 30 minutes. Alternating 30-second workout and 30-second rest makes this workout effective.

During the break, we were able to roam around and mingle with other bloggers, I even saw a familiar face. At first I was too shy to approach her but as our eyes caught each other, I smiled and told her that I think I have seen her somewhere, but I can’t remember where and when I saw her. Later did we realize that we come from the same school in college. She was a nursing student, Marianne Maric, who is the beautiful face behind NYOQ. She happens to be an active fashion blogger too.  

As Vince called on the next presenters, bloggers hurriedly went back to their seats because it was Sofitel‘s turn to present what they have. Being a known luxurious 5-star hotel in the metro, surely they were able to catch the audiences’ attention easily.

12 more presenters like the new entrepreneurs of Freestyle Ballers, the sassy and sexy photographers of Boudoir Dolls, the amazing Pocholo Gonzales of CreatiVoices and of course, the big and tasty burgers of Size Matters were introduced on the second batch. Snacks were served after the second batch courtesy of Size Matters ! I got the Hungarian Sausage Burger, which really was tasty and BIG. Size does really matter! :)

I also had the chance to try Lipton Iced Tea’s Almond Calamansi Tea. It was soothingto the throat and tasted really good.

The third and last batch of presenters started around 4 pm. It included the unique buying and selling strategy of Shopinas.com, the relaxing and pampering services of Blue Day Water Spa, with performance from the Polecats Manila, and the innovative technology of  HTC.

I personally got excited with the performance of Polecats  since I have been wanting to enroll to their classes.

 The event closed as Vince Golango THANKED every blogger and business presenter who contributed to the success of the event. Moreover, he promised everyone to stay tuned for the next Blogapalooza sometime in November. He ended with the raffling of items from the sponsors. BIG Bags from Tripologie, USB flash drives and speakers from Avira Antivirus, and giftpacks from BlueDayWater Spa. Followed by the distribution of the loot bags! Faces of bloggers overwhelmed upon receiving their lootbags! Congratulations to raffle winners!

When in Manila, treat yourself to some “me time” and spend a day in the spa or a similar establishment where you can clear your mind and just lay back and relax. Such places are abundant in the metro but nothing beats going somewhere that has it all.

Aesthetic Science, for instance, is a one-stop shop that has been in the industry for six years already. Aside from spa services like facial and body treatments, it also offers cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery services. In my previous visit, I tried the Herbal Enzyme Facial, which did wonders for my skin. During the doctor’s consultation then, she told me that I had some warts on my face and neck. I wouldn’t have known about it until she mentioned it! Apparently, it’s something viral and contagious. If you come in contact with someone who has it, say, make beso-beso with such person, then the virus will most likely get transmitted. So, I scheduled another visit to Aesthetic Science in Makati and set an appointment for Wart Removal (P100/piece for flat warts or P2,500 per area).

Before the treatment began, one of the technicians in the clinic gently cleansed my face to reveal my bare skin. Then the doctor, Dr. Yanee Santos, examined my skin and the area that needs treatment. She explained to me what to expect during the treatment—its process and its aftereffects. I was glad that she did because I never had this sort of treatment before. It was my first time to undergo it and I appreciated all the helpful information.

First, they applied topical anesthesia to the necessary areas, which are my face and neck. While I waited about 45 minutes to one hour for it to be totally absorbed, I leisurely read some magazines to keep myself entertained. I was then transferred to the treatment room where the cauterization will take place.

A particular machine is used for the treatment, which zaps away the warts. Before the actual procedure, the doctor mentioned that it might sting a little but the pain will be tolerable. I think the zapping process only took ten minutes—shorter than the waiting period for the anesthesia. The treatment concluded with the application of an anti-bacterial healing cream on the treatment areas.

Before leaving, they informed me that the cauterized areas would be reddish and would turn into scabs the next day. It is necessary to leave it as it is and not wash the affected areas for 24 hours. The scabs on the face will last for seven to ten days, while the ones on the neck will last longer—about two weeks. During that time, it is important to apply the healing cream twice a day, and not to be exposed to the sun too much. Also, it would be best to go back to the clinic after two weeks, so the doctor can check on your condition.

When in Manila, take a break from the chaotic city life and spoil yourself silly. Whenever I feel stressed or simply want to indulge, I get a massage or some sort of body treatment to make me feel all good.

There’s a one-stop shop in the metro where you could try various services such as massages, facials, and all kinds of cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery treatments. Aesthetic Science, which was established in 2005, has been providing affordable skin and body treatments with the atmosphere of a relaxing spa.

The spacious clinic has eight private rooms, as well as one operating room for the cosmetic surgery procedures. I had the opportunity to try the Herbal Enzyme Facial (P1,180) in the privacy of my own room. But before I began the facial, a doctor came into the room to analyze my skin and give her recommendation.

She mentioned that I had a couple of dark spots and asked if I apply sunscreen to my face daily. Apparently, moisturizers with SPF aren’t enough. Since the Philippines is a tropical country, you need to apply and re-apply the sunblock regularly, even during rainy days since the UV rays can pass through the clouds. That was a nice and useful tip that I got from the informative doctor.

The facial treatment I selected was especially designed for sensitive skin, which was just perfect for me. I liked the fact that it didn’t call for the use of chemicals, but digestive enzymes that help soften the skin and remove dead cells.

After putting covers on my eyes, the technician applied the mask on my face. It actually smelled good. She turned on the steam machine while the herbal enzyme mask hardened. The pricking came after and the technician was very thorough with it, I must say. Good thing there was nice ambient music to soothe the senses and distract me from the pain.

The high frequency device followed after, and it helped disinfect and close the pores. But what I enjoyed the most was the facial massage that happened next. The technician had a soft touch and it was very relaxing. While my face absorbed all the goodness from the enzyme facial, the technician helped me relax some more by giving me a brief massage on the shoulders, chest and back.

As if I wasn’t being spoiled enough, I was also treated to a facial Diamond Peel (P1,200), which is a non-chemical exfoliation treatment. The device actually has fine diamonds on its wand, which also has a suction action. This procedure was supposed to take the dead skin cells off and minimize the appearance of blemishes. Even though the diamond peel felt a bit rough on my face, I felt that it really rejuvenated my skin.

After the treatment, I was offered some complimentary green tea to complete the pampering experience. Ahhh… The hot drink helped calm my senses more.

While I had the facial, my companion had a chance to try the Body scrub with Bleach and Massage (P1,480). Her massage technician combined the rich sea salt with fine oils and rubbed it all over her body. The rubbing action and the dimness of the room created a very relaxing feeling. After exfoliating her skin with the body scrub and bleach, she had to rinse it all off and then head back to the massage table for her full body massage. The massage complemented the scrub, and it gave the muscles a good wake-up call. The whole procedure took more than an hour and she felt truly pampered in the end.
