Discover the Magnificence and Splendor of Apulit Island Resort in Palawan!

When in Manila and looking for something intellectually stimulating and fun to do, I highly recommend you try going on a walking tour with Carlos Celdran. That’s what I did! I went to experience his Livin La Vida Imelda walking tour with a friend one Saturday afternoon. I’ve known about the famous Carlos Celdran Walking Tours since I was a fresh grad and being the history lover that I am, I’ve always wanted to try it. In fact, I made it part of my to-do list and thanks to When in Manila, I finally get to cross it off my list. Yay!

The meeting place was inside the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) at 2pm since this is where the tour started. But since my friend, Mai and I were so excited, we were there at 1:15pm! So yes, we had to wait for quite awhile. What did we do to pass the time? Take photos of course! (Okay so technically, pictures are NOT allowed inside CCP. But we had camera phones.)

I was so excited to see Carlos Celdran again and start the tour – I saw him before up close and personal when I went to experience his Walk this Way Intramuros tour – the feeling was like meeting one of my celebrity crushes! I had a great time at his Walk This Way Intramuros Tour so I had really high hopes that the Livin La Vida Imelda Tour was gonna be fun!  We were so not disappointed.

The Livin La Vida Imelda Tour talked about the life of our former first lady, Imelda Romualdez Marcos of course! From my history lessons in school, Imelda has always been portrayed as this woman of beauty, poise and elegance. We never really talked about her struggles in her earlier life nor did we ever touch much about her love life.  

But here, with Carlos Celdran, I learned so much more about Imelda. Just like in the Intramuros tour, he shared with us trivia about the former first lady, Imelda Marcos – the kind you don’t learn from your history books all throughout the tour. For instance, I actually didn’t know that Imelda dated Ninoy Aquino for some time before Ferdinand Marcos.

I also didn’t know that Imelda being named as Muse of Manila before was only because she wouldn’t take no for an answer after losing the Miss Manila pageant. I have to say that had to take a lot of guts to march right in to the mayor of Manila and tell him “I deserved to win”. 

I thought Carlos was pretty hilarious in this tour with his Imelda acts – from the way Imelda holds her handkerchief and the way she talked – he’s got it all down.

There sure are a lot of people – foreigners and Filipinos alike who attends his tours. There were about 30 to 40 of us who attended the tour that Saturday afternoon. One of them even caught my eye – hahaha! What a cutie. Too bad, he was there on a date with his equally pretty girlfriend.

I was able to take a photo of the view outside CCP. Pretty nice I would say. 

I’m just disappointed that we couldn’t take photos inside CCP. I would have loved to have my photo taken sitting in one of the theater chairs inside CCP – just like Imelda Marcos used to do when she watched plays. Anyhoo…

The next stop of the tour was at Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), another one of the really beautiful architectures in Manila that the former first lady, Imelda Marcos had built.

It’s been quite awhile since I last had a chance to enter PICC. So you can bet your boots I was instantly in awe when we went inside and a view like this was what welcomed us. I have to say, Imelda did right with this building. It definitely screams of elegance doesn’t it? Not only can we hold international beauty pageants here, I bet we can even host a glitzy event such as the Oscars, Golden Globe and Emmys here. All that’s needed is a red carpet rolled out from the entrance stairs. Well that was actually the intent of our former first lady and she really did a darn good job making this vision come true. 

Look at those elegant chandeliers. I can almost imagine Imelda when this was being built and how she’s telling the architect “I want people to come in here and say Wow! I want people’s  jaws to drop in awe.”    

Storytelling time with Carlos Celdran. If you guys are going on his walking tour, I highly suggest wearing 1) flat shoes naturally and 2) pants. This is so that you’d be really comfortable especially when he asks you to sit down.  

What I loved about his tour is that there is no boring moment. You’re touring places. You’re listening to his stories, getting yourself a refresher course in history. You’re listening to music. He’s sharing trivia.  He’s making you laugh too! Truly I learned a lot more about the life of Imelda Marcos from the Livin La Vida Imelda Tour and I’ve to say that getting to know more about the former first lady of the Philippines through this tour, I have more respect and admiration for her.

When in Manila, no matter how busy we are with our personal lives, may we never forget to take the time and participate in worthwhile activities in order to make a difference and touch people’s lives!

I find joy in sharing. Everybody in my circle knows that fact. I love organizing stuff for people and making efforts to show how special they are but never have I tried volunteering before so when my artist friend Nel Diamond invited me, I didn’t have any 2nd thoughts. I immediately contacted my friends to ask for donations as well. Since the year was about to end, I thought sharing my blessings and making children smile would be the perfect activity to show how grateful I am with all the blessings I got!

The Paint Their Smile project started last year and was spearheaded by Nel Diamond Paredes. I personally admire this kid a lot because of his genuine heart for charity. When he started his own business (Indefinite Stone) in making hand painted personalized shirts, shoes and bags last year, he thought of putting up an activity for hospital kids so his business would have more direction. I find him to be very unusual because usually, people at his age prefer hanging-out at bars, drinking and busy with their own vices but  him… he prefers to make a difference. He has already organized art exhibits to raise funds for less fortunate kids and even worked a summer job just to raise for funds for them. I’m really impressed that’s why I believe he deserves much support and recognition for being such a great example for all of us. I knew in my heart that this activity would be worth the effort!

As expected, it turned out to be beyond successful!

We sure painted a lot of smiles that day! I never thought how reaching-out, talking with the kids and parents would have a profound effect on me and my friends. To personally hand them the gifts and connect with them had an indescribable positive effect. As to what Nel said, ” It’s not about the presents but our presence. ”  Somehow in our own little way, we were able to make them forget about their pain even just for a little while because we made them feel that they are not forgotten and very much loved. Now, I truly agree with what Burt Bacharach  is trying to tell us for decades now… “What the world needs now is LOVE.”  I’m certain that God will provide us with more when He sees your genuine desire to share. No matter how hard my trials are as early as now, I know that He is just testing me if I will easily surrender or go for my happiness no matter what.  I’d like to think that I am leveling up. I know that after these trials, I will have a much upgraded armor to face the world stronger. I just need a few cups more of courage and faith…perhaps this is what YOU need too!

ahhhhhhh…… there is really joy in giving and  no matter what they say, LIFE is still great when in Manila!

 Keds Shoes and Footwear: Rocking Your Feet Through the Years

I was just in Bohol a couple of months ago with my family and thought that I had seen it all and had checked off all the sites and attractions. Bohol was that perfect beach getaway for my family—wholesome, fun, activity-filled and at night, just as it was in the day, quiet and tranquil. This time, I went with my two girl friends and best writing partners, Nikka Sarthou and Nina Terol-Zialcita. Though we’re colleagues, we sometimes don’t see each other regularly and have to conduct much of our business on-line.  I was so looking forward to girl bonding.

Just as my first visit, Bohol did not disappoint. I re-discovered old places, learned new things and just couldn’t stop eating!

Here are my top five things to see, learn (yes, learn!) and taste in Bohol.

1. Must-see:  Tarsiers

No one can say they’ve visited Bohol without seeing the tarsiers. Even second-timers like me need to pay homage to the most popular tourist ambassador of Bohol.

We were happy to see that the tarsiers now have their own sanctuary. This sprawling complex gives the tarsiers more freedom to swing from trees and climb up the branches to a higher place if it wants a breather from the many tourists and fans. 

Our visit coincided with mating season so there were a number of tarsiers that were, ahem, indisposed. (Did that mean they got a room?). Between the male and female, it is the female who is more aggressive; she draws attention to herself by making noises to attract the male. 

Tarsiers mate once a year and when a female gives birth, the baby only as big as a thumb.

I was particularly happy that our tour guide was very knowledgeable about tarsiers; he could answer any question we threw at him. Like when he told us that the tarsier diet consisted mostly of cultured worms, I jokingly asked him if cultured worms were the ones who listened to Mozart. : )

In answer to my questions, he gave quite a lengthy reply about the difference between cultured worms and the garden-variety type. 

2. Must learn from the Churches and monasteries

Sure, like most other parts of the country, Bohol has its share of Churches, bell towers and monasteries. Our favorite was Cafe Lawis inside the Dauis Pilgrim Heritage Center beside the Señora de la Asunción Shrine.

The town of Dauis, which is on the edge of Panglao island is said to be the first stop for visitors coming in from the Bohol mainland.

There is a museum and a quaint café that serves soufflé cake which comes in Tsokolate Eh, Kinampay (purple yam or ube) and Ginger flavors. It is eaten by breaking the cake at its center and pouring in the Tsokolate Eh.

But my surprise discovery was how history is etched in the walls and windows of these religious buildings.  And quite simply, how beautiful they are. I have always looked inside the churches I visit but sometimes fail to notice  how the outside is equally interesting, if not more so. Just check out the picture of Nikka and Nina outside the Baclayon Church.

Their contemporary and, might I add fashionable outfits, are an interesting complement and contrast to the pre-colonial structures and outlines of the church.

3. Must shop at Aproniana Souvenir Shop 

And of course, no trip–girl bonding or not–is complete without shopping. We stopped at Aproniana Souvenir Shop, a one-stop shop complex with just about every thing that Bohol has to offer:  delicacies, souvenir t-shirts, bags, mugs, shawls.

The best thing was that there were no crowds, the whole complex was air-conditioned, and the merchandise, reasonably priced. 

It was also very orderly. Once you’ve rounded up all your shopping, you can take it to the counter where are virtually no lines (at least on that day).  And just in case it’s one of those days when there is a queue, chairs are set up in the area which also doubles as a waiting lounge.

4. Must chill at Panglao Bluewater Beach Resort

Traveling with the girls means looking for places to have nice pictures taken. In our case, we wanted to play around with our hats and our resort wear.

Actually, our outfits were upstaged by Panglao Bluewater Resort. 

If this picture elicited a WOW from you, imagine how we all reacted when we got down from the van and were greeted by the sun beckoning at us from the poolside.

 For those who don’t have time to stay for a few days, Panglao Bluewater also offers  specially priced day sessions.

5. Must taste (everything) at The Bee Farm

A most memorable dinner was in what may be described as the land of bees and honey. The Bee Farm is a place I instantly fell in love with.

I had heard people rave about the malunggay and spicy ginger ice cream, which is available exclusively at The Bee Farm, so my taste buds were in suspended anticipation.

I didn’t know The Bee Farm would be a feast for the eyes as well as my palate.

A trip to the Bee Farm is a complete gastronomical experience; starting from the souvenir | food shop where find you an array of spreads like pesto malunggay, mango (my personal favorite) and chocolate (made from tablea) to be slathered on squash bread.

We were full before we made it to dinner, but even that didn’t stop us from feasting at the actual buffet table. 

The Bee Farm is just the place where you can while away an entire evening and not so much as see it pass by. We were regretful about leaving.

On the way out, I saw that The Bee Farm also has a bed and breakfast for those who also won’t be able to tear themselves away. We didn’t have time to check out the B&B, but I found myself adding another reason to go back to Bohol to my checklist.

6. Way to fly: PAL Mabuhay Miles

I know I only mentioned five things, but it wouldn’t be fair to tease you with all the things to discover in Bohol without telling you how to get there. 

You can fly to Bohol or within the Philippines FREE by accumulating miles. Take it from this points junkie who religiously tracks her miles and is always on the look out for mileage promos (like double your miles).

I found any even faster way to accumulate miles was by using a credit card that will earn me miles for everyday purchases like the Mabuhay MasterCard, which earns 1 mile for every P33 charged to the credit card.

Just so you know how great that is, I was able to redeem NINE (yes, 9!) tickets to Bohol last year through PAL’s 70^th anniversary promo. That’s why I got my whole family, along with our beloved Yaya Remz, to fly with us.

So, When in Manila, take a side strip and swing by Bohol where there is much to see, learn and taste. 

Primates, History, Honey: Things to see, learn and taste in Bohol

When in Manila, it’s impossible not to feel the frenzied hustle of the fast-paced city life (unless you are a monk in a trance).  Sometimes we all need a break and go to a faraway place where the loud car horns and smokescreen of…well…smoke are just some distant tiny beeps and wisps of out-of-place gas.   One day, out of whim, I decided to take that break.  I checked out some tour packages online to see if there are any available that same November weekend the spur of the moment decision took place. 

Enter travelfactor.org, a very cool organization for travellers with lots of great feedback. Being a solo traveller, I found the services that they offer very beneficial. They take care of the transportation, the billeting, among others.   I decided to register for their Surfvivor La Union trip to try being the surfer chick that people insist I am (must be because I’m morena).  The package included transportation to and from La Union, an overnight stay in a hotel, one dinner, 2 surfing lessons, a personalized bag tag and a Travel Factor shirt, all for just Php 3,000.00.  I looked forward to spending time away from the worries of the city and finally ticking off one item from my bucketlist: to travel alone.  

So I, a group of students, a group of officemates, and the group coordinator and his girlfriend, departed in a van that took us to La Union in roughly about six hours.   We arrived at Sebay Inn at the break of dawn.  The staff was friendly and accommodating, allowing us to use one of the rooms before the official check-in time.  It was drizzling and I thought it was just perfect.  You see, I’m planning to get stoked but never get heat stroke.

Also, I love the fact that they have no wi-fi there so people can also detach from the world wide web even just for a few days. another reason why I love the place so much is because the people there are sooooo nice!!! Seriously! Every person carry stories with them that are worth hearing!

I remember pondering on one question in my head during the trip.. “Why do I keep on going back to Corregidor?”  Perhaps, it is due to the total detachment from the concrete jungle of Manila. It is one of the few places which I get to enjoy a good night sleep. I feel at peace here. There is a certain energy which the place enfolds me with.  I love how this place enables me to clear my head and  think more creatively. I believe this is the best reward I can give to myself. =)

So when in Manila, give yourself a break! Detach yourself  from worldly worries and book yourself a trip to Corregidor!

and like the famous words uttered by General Douglas McArhur….. yes Corregidor, I SHALL RETURN!!

When in Manila, you’ll definitely never run out of interesting places to unwind for the Philippine archipelago  possesses  countless natural treasures waiting to be discovered! As for this occasion, it was more of a re-discovery for us!

This week, let us take you on a visual tour for you to witness the spectacular sites and experiences during our trip to Pangasinan!

Last Nov 21 – 22, When In Manila got invited on a guided tour around Pangasinan courtesy of the Pangasinan government.

Frank and I feel very fortunate to be part of the When In Manila entourage for the 1^st Pangasinan Digital ICT Congress where our editor-in-chief Vince was invited as one of the guest speakers during that week long event.  As for us, our duty was to attend the tour to experience the sights, sounds, flavors as well as to witness the improvements which the government has worked so hard for the betterment of the province! The government of Pangasinan, spearheaded by their very hardworking governor, Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. has been doing its best in achieving its vision of  Pangasinan to become  “the best place to invest, work, live and raise a family”.

At first, we never really knew what to expect. Whatever it was, we both knew the trip was gonna be fun and memorable!

We really hate to bore you with long facts so we’ve decided to take you there with our photos. Frank and I enjoyed capturing every moment during this trip!

I must say, the longanisa at their restaurant was very tasty!! I just hope they can make the price more reasonable though..

I also suggest they work on their scrambled eggs  and the quality of their rice=) This meal can be improved!

It was indeed a looooong relaxing day for us. For dinner, we’ve decided to wander around town in the hope to find good eats. One good thing about us, I may say is that we always have the spirit of adventure with us. We don’t really make plans….we just say yes to whatever good unfolds! I remember telling manong driver to take us to a place where there’s food!

And so manong driver dropped us off somewhere at the capitol complex. We made a quick stroll and in no time, we saw quite a decent place to dine… the Capitol Cafe and Employee’s Lounge.

We never expected that dinner would turn out to be one of our  memorable ones, because the food tasted way better than the other hi-end  fancy looking restos in Manila! The food was definitely outstanding! Their fried chicken is the real SARAP TO THE BONES!

After that very filling pleasant meal, we decided to wander around the capitol plaza to feel the cool night breeze.

How relaxing it was to breathe fresh air  and witness the joy and laughter of the locals that night. This is something which you can’t experience in Manila now a days. And for a moment, I wanted to exchange places with them because they live such simple and happy lives.

The people were very friendly and kind… living such simple and happy lives! 

Another thing which we found impressive was that the place was  very safe especially for shutterbugs like us who often have our

cameras with us.

The next day, we woke up early for our Pangasinan Tour…..

Heaven’s way of saying, “Prepare for yet another great adventure!”

 We were all asked to have breakfast at the Capitol Resort

Of course, we had to try their specialties….

After that super satisfying breakfast, we all hopped on the tour bus! Yey!!

We were joined by some of the ICT speakers.  Judith, our tour guide that day told us a lot of impressive facts about the province

First stop was a visit to the Our Lady of Manaoag Shrine!

A famous destination for thousands of catholic devotees from all over the world due to the countless miracles and requests granted.

For our next destination, we went on a 45 minute boat cruise along the Pantal River Mangroves.  For now, this river cruise is offered to the public for free! The Pangsinan government sure has a lot of plans for this place!

For our lunch, our tour guide brought us to a so-called famous eatery in Pangasinan – Serato’s

We ordered this huge grilled hito (catfish)! This is now the best hito I’ve tasted so far! This was the one which we enjoyed the most!

This is my first ever time to eat frogs legs! Yes, it does taste like chicken however, it wasn’t freshly fried so it felt like I was chewing rubber! ahuhuhuhu

For our next stop, we went to Je’s- the famous bagoong (shrimp paste) maker in Pangasinan!

For our final stop, we requested Ms. Judith to take us to the wharf bound to the famous Hundred Islands!

Did you know you only have to pay 1,100- 2,000 pesos for a boat that can hold up to 15 people?  The tour includes a whole day boat trip (8-5pm) on 3 islands (food not included). Better  bring your own food because the prices in the islands are sooo expensive!

I will definitely comeback for the island hopping tour!

Before heading home, the organizers took us to Dagupan City’s Galvan street where the famous Pigar-pigar is found!

Pigar pigar is actually Dagupan City‘s version of Beef Stirfry! It’s really easy to make!

I never thought that trip would make a strong impact on me. I remember feeling melancholy as we journeyed back to busy old Manila. I loved the simplicity of the place and impressed with Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. ‘s leadership. I do hope that all of their plans will be successfully implemented in the future.  I must admit that at first, I was a little doubtful but after the trip, I’m convinced that their vision in making Pangasinan “the best place to invest, work, live and raise a family” could really be attainable  in time with proper planning, hard work and cooperation by everyone.  I may say that Pangasinan is indeed a model province!

We would like to thank the dedicated people behind the success of the 1^st Pangasinan Digital ICT Congress especially to Vange and JR for being such great hosts! Many thanks as well to the Pangasinan goverment for giving us this opportunity to experience the beauty and goodness of the province! Congratulations and more power to you Gov. Amado T. Come And Experience The Beauty And Goodness Of Pangasinan!

When In Manila…’WALK THIS WAY!‘ Yes, walk your way to Carlos Celdran‘s world-famous tour  of  ’Intramuros’ in Manila.  Celdran gives guided tours of the old walled city of Manila, the Intramuros, and people throng to him, following him like he is the ‘Pied Piper’ of the Philippines !! He sings the National anthem of the Philippines with his hand on his heart (and boy, he’s a pretty good singer!). The tour begins….

All of us in the tour group of about thirty, marveled at his eloquence, sophistication, knowledge of history and that satiric-comic wit that laced every sentence. Is CARLOS CELDRAN just a tour guide ? He was pure entertainment from 3 Pm to 7 ! We walked when he walked, looked when he showed, stopped when he stopped, listened when he talked, ate when he gave. We were mesmerized, in short. And what was our man selling— a Filipino’s own version of his land’s history! Beauty!

Like the mythological Proteus, the sea-god who could change to any form, Carlos Celdran has the theatric ability to create a scene of Philippine history from pre-Hispanic 1500s to this date —  just all by himself and his little sling bag, a microphone and a boom-box!

Even his attire is a statement on Pinoy culture. Carlos rolls the sleeves of his ‘Barong‘ : a shirt that’s a cross between a south-east asian shirt the Kurta (with its light embroidery and pastel hues) and a Western formal shirt (collars and cuffs and buttons). This Barong-clad Filipino pulls out of his bag one of his several hats and morphs into a five act play!  

It seems that the walls of Intramuros are speaking through him– Fort Santiago, Rizal Shrine, River Pasig, Ateneo University, the skyline above the ruins left by the second world-war come alive with distant echoes from Manila’s heterogenous past.

Carlos is a social activist pushing for the Reproductive Health Bill in the Philippines (a controversial topic in the Catholic Christian context of Philippine’s socio-political fabric), he’s also a performing artist and an entrepreneur. But it is in his tours that he comes across at his pithiest best. Everything else he does seems an off-shoot of his complete identification with his country.

When you meet Carlos Celdran at his tour, you feel that Manila belongs to him. There is an undeniable, uncanny familiarity between the moss-covered stone walls of Santiago and this boy as he hollers “SECULARRRRR!!! “  to remind the present day Philippines of its aspiration and identity. In fact, there is a lot of social responsibility attached to such actions. I am surprised at his perkiness, the nip in his every statement. And he is such a regular guy– not very tall or short, not very thin or fat, not very Spanish or Filipino! Unless you see him perform at his tour…you might pass him by.

Just as you might pass Manila…enjoying yet finding faults with it…without appreciating the quintessential saga of the Philippines and its capital city. Carlos could be held erroneous, biased, politically motivated…. And over the years we might see him a little sullied by his success and endorsements. But for now.. he is still Sterling.

An ardent lover of his country who breaks his own heart as he admits the downsides of being a Filipino, and breaks a foreigner’s heart when he points at the inequities met out to his beloved homeland by the Spanish, the Americans, the Japanese and the Chinese. A romantic-pragmatist who sews those wounds by praising the incidental benefits of being influenced and espoused by the invaders.

When I stepped out of this charmed ‘regression’ session with my group of tourists from all over the world, we were all suddenly thrown into the present Circa 2011– cars on the streets, traffic on the way out of Intramuros. To jam-packed Manila roads, enormous billboards and faces that looked an admix of Asian-Caucasian, Chinese, Korean and Indian, American ;)

 This variety that never made sense before Carlos– made sense now.  That Filipinos are like ‘HALO-HALO‘ – a mix-mix Filipino dessert-  of all the cultures that set foot on its shore. That’s right– on Carlos Celdran treats his guests to the local chocolates, and ends the WALK THIS WAY tour by serving the yummiest Halo-Halo in town to ALL !

As a kid growing up, I was exposed to so many outdoor activities. I still have very fond memories of cold nights spent in sleeping bags, giggling and counting shooting stars.

Time went by, and I grew up into a city dweller. When In Manila, I learned to go out, shop and dine. The only exercise I get is when I walk through Landmark from Glorietta, to get to Greenbelt. The urban jungles of Manila have become the only jungle I am familiar with. I was afraid, and yes, it was very apparent that I have lost my fun, outdoor side.

I was trying to wrap my head around this realization and trying to convince myself of otherwise when word was given about Roxy’s Femme Fling. Roxy was inviting bloggers for a day of fun and activities at their store in Nuvali. Knowing of Roxy’s fun and active reputation, I immediately got on board. Roxy, challenge accepted!

The day started with a 10:30 a.m. meet up at R.O.X. in Bonifacio Highstreet, which happens to be the biggest sports, outdoor, and recreation store in Southeast Asia. We then took two of these cool Rockstar vans to Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

It was at almost 12 when we arrived. After those Rockstar energy drinks while on the way, there was very excited chatter. Lunch was served courtesy of Sumo Sam. During a sushi making demo, they explained that their restaurant makes use of authentic ingredients that gives their food that extra oomph!

My favorites were the Tempura, the Salmon with Wasabi Cream Sauce, the Salmon Sashimi, and the Crunchy Tuna Maki.

After the meal, we headed on to the Nuvali Qucksilver store, which carries Roxy, and started with the days activities. A very comfortable beach setting greeted us once in the store. There were these pink oversized Roxy pillows, seashell decors, and even gummy sea critters! Isn’t it pretty?

First up were manicures from Nail-a-holics. The pampering begins…

Next up was a make up demo from Wet n’ Wild. I’ve always been familiar with the brand and I use it myself, but I never knew that it started as makeup for surfer girl types hence the name.

We were then given a short presentation on Roxy as a brand. I believe the best line from that was: “Roxy is like a summer day that never ends”.

The fashion challenge was our next activity. We were divided into groups and given a specific theme. We were to style and shoot a Roxy campaign with that theme.

We didn’t win the challenge, though it really didn’t matter much at that point. Prizes were awarded to the winners and giveaways were given out to everyone. This included gift certificates from Roxy. Yay!

There was a longboarding activity set up next which I was excited for, but shopping overshadowed everything else, and we didn’t get to go anymore.

It was a long, fun, and tiring day. The Roxy Femme Fling was one for the books. Roxy shows us that you don’t really have to be the outdoorsy type to have an adventure. It’s all about the attitude.

Last weekend, the ABS-CBN Foundation, Boardwalk, and other sponsors spearheaded an event dubbed as “A Run For The Pasig River.” This advocacy run aims to encourage Filipinos in taking their part to restore Pasig River’s former beauty and to keep it safe and clean. It also aims to spark awareness to Filipinos on what we can do to protect and give back to our environment. WhenInManila.com was invited to experience this spectacular event!

“A Run for Pasig River” was able to attain a world record by gathering 150,000 individuals all running for the same environmental goal, breaking last year’s record. Being able to witness history unfold before my eyes gave me more hope that our country can strive to be better if we all aim and focus on one positive goal. Seeing the smiles of the people running for the Pasig River,not hindered by the heat of the morning sun, and great number of individuals around them was definitely a sight to behold. It was a sight which can ignite the passion of every Filipino. All of these were made possible by the sponsors and Boardwalk’s Para Sa Kalikasan Campaign.

The run had categories for 3k, 5k, and 10k. Friends, families, colleagues, classmates, and even celebrities with the likes of Derek Ramsay, Jake Cuenca, and Matteo Guidicelli, all came with the intent of doing their part to help save Pasig River. Personally, I felt that I was already part of history just by running in this event. Not only was I able to uphold a healthy lifestyle, but I was also able to be part of a Guinness World Record, and Pasig river’s restoration. After the run, entertainment was provided by various celebrities and rock bands. Not to mention the freebies which are offered all around the activity area. This was truly a great way to culminate the wonderful event!

With this event, Boardwalk showed that their passion does not only lie in fashion and lifestyle but also in doing their part in making our country a better place for us and for future generations to come. During these tough times, we need institutions and events such as this one to fuel the Filipino passion towards our country and our environment. This is definitely something to look forward to When In Manila. Our gratitude to Boardwalk Business Ventures, Inc., for giving us an opportunity to be part of history.

WhenInManila.com and our friends were given an opportunity to take part in Carlos Celdran’s popular Walking Tour of Intramuros. As a contributor, I remember my first post on WhenInManila.com was about the beauty and the history behind the walled city of Intramuros. I’ve always been in awe of the mystery, the ambiance, the architecture, the picturesque sights, and the stories behind every wall and street of Manila’s former prime center. Upon hearing about the opportunity to go back to Intramuros, I did not hesitate to grab this assignment, and boy was I happy I did.

The Walk This Way Tour of Carlos Celdran was scheduled to start at around 3 in the afternoon. My friend and I arrived at the entrance of Fort Santiago, along with a group of 20 – 30 tour ready individuals. I was surprised to see that almost half the sight seers were Filipinos! Locals who just wanted to re-explore and re-discover our awesome sites! Or perhaps they were all just there to see Intramuros from a totally different point of view, that of legendary tour guide: Carlos Celdran. 

We started walking around Fort Santiago while Carlos, our extraordinary tour guide, gave us a brief yet comprehensive account of the beginnings of Manila and Intramuros. From Rizal, to Catholocism, to the dynamic developments of Intramuros in the past, Carlos took us back in history with his witty remarks and theatrical storytelling. I assure you that there is no dull moment with Carlos Celdran! We visited the Rizal commemorative museum inside Fort Santiago as our tour guide gave a review of the Spanish and American colonization of the Philippines.

Up next on our fun-filled tour date was a visit to the ruins of the former St.Ignatius Church and the former Ateneo de Manila. We had to ride a horse drawn carriage, also known as a Kalesa, to reach our destination. It was an interesting experience since it was the first time I was able to ride our ver own Kalesa. I felt like a kid riding my bicycle for the first time. It was also nice to sit next to an Australian couple who had very nice things to say about the Philippines and Filipinos. 

Carlos Celdran continued on with an eye-opening account of the war which destroyed Intramuros and affected the whole country. After which, we proceeded to the San Agustin Church to further give us an understanding of the Filipino history.

One of the highlights of the day was right at the end! We were treated to some local sweets, known popularly as Halo-Halo, to wrap up the tour. The name Halo-Halo literally translates to “Mix-Mix” since it is a concoction of all sorts of ingredients for this yummy dessert. Of course, Carlos found a great way to incorporate our final sweet treat with the entire trip. According to him, we are like the Halo-Halo dessert. The Filipino culture has become a conglomeration of various cultural influences due to American, Spanish, and Japanese colonization. Removing all these influences, we just might not be the culture filled people with such colorful backgrounds that we are today! 

The Walk This Way Tour has given me a different perspective on our rich and humble beginnings as a nation and I will definitely use this to enrich my passion for being a Filipino. This may be a simple walking tour for some, but with an open heart and mind, this tour can really be a lot more.

Walk This Way: Walking Tour of Manila by Carlos Celdran

The metro was abuzz with different activities, but one that stood out most was the much talked about and highly anticipated Lantern Festival. Of course everyone wanted to be there! Anyone who has ever seen Tangled, or saw pictures of this activity online saw how amazing beautiful the lanterns can be. Whether it be for the sentimental, the superstitious, or even just the curious, When In Manila, the Lantern Festival was one event that everyone was looking forward to.

Giselle Banzon, a DLSU student was one of them. After learning of the Banchetto Lantern Festival, Giselle excitedly tried to reserve lanterns for herself and her friends. She was so disappointed when she found out that all lanterns for the event were already reserved. She was so disappointed in fact, that she decided to have her own little Lantern Festival. News spread and on the night of the Cuenca Lantern Festival, there was an estimated 1000 people in attendance and 700 sold lanterns, with people wanting more.

It was a rainy evening, and after news of the Banchetto event being cancelled, I was a little scared that the event wouldn’t push through.

I arrived at Cuenca park at around 9:30 when the rain started to subside. At one corner, Century Tuna was giving away free tastes of their product. Hayden Fragrances was giving away free samples, too. The place was packed!

By 11, people marched onto the fields with their lanterns. The field was pretty muddy after the rain, but I don’t think anyone cared about that. Everyone was focused on their lanterns and started to set up.

Pretty soon, lit lanterns were everywhere!

On 11.11.11 at 11.11 pm 700 lanterns were released at Cuenca Park, Ayala Alabang.

The highlight of the night was the introduction of Johnnie Walker‘s Responsible Drinking Ambassador since 2008, two- time McLaren Mercedes Formula One World Champion, Mika Hakkinen. Growing up, my brother and I were avid fans of Formula One, with me cheering for McLaren and my brother for Ferrari, so when I heard Hakkinen was coming to Manila, I knew I had to pull out all the stops to meet him. During the party itself, it was difficult to take a picture with Hakkinen, but with much perseverance and my skills of wading through crowds and long lines, I was able to not only take pictures with THE Mika Hakkinen, but shake his hand and exchange a couple of words. (Haha, I’m sorry, I realize I sound like a fan girl)

Anyways, I was later told that I’d be able to interview Mika one-on-one before a private cocktail party that was to be held at Red, Shangri-la Makati the next day. I made sure that I went prepared, that I was dressed appropriately, had my questions ready and I swore I’d maintain an air of professionalism during the interview, but once I stepped into the interview room and was sitting 2 arms length away from Mika, I was a nervous wreck. Thankfully he was very accommodating and answered my questions in a friendly manner that immediately put me at ease. 

While sipping on his cup of coffee, Mika, myself and another interviewer were able to discuss several things but great emphasis was put on why he joined the campaign in the first place, to which he was reminded of his almost fatal ’95 Formula One car crash in Adelaide. He spoke of how not being in control of his car was not only terrifying but of course, life changing. He did mention though that he was thankful that the accident happened in a controlled environment and that the only person injured was himself. He went on to say that that was why he joined Johnnie Walker’s campaign, he said that being sober and losing control is one thing, but being drunk, getting behind the wheel, and posing a threat to not only yourself but also to other innocent people is, as he said, STUPID. 

I will never forget that moment when he looked at me dead in the eye and said, NEVER EVER DRINK AND DRIVE. For Mika, it doesn’t matter if you only had one shot of tequila or one bottle of beer, if there’s a drop of alcohol in your system, don’t even think of getting behind the driver’s wheel. He brought up the importance of having a designated driver, a role that is easily interchangeable per party, that way, no one misses out on the fun. 

“In its simplest form, responsible drinking means that people need to be accountable for their own safety and that of those around them. Part of this means not drinking alcohol if you are planning to drive. There are so many options available whether it is appointing a friend to be the designated driver, booking a taxi or using a public transport for your journey home. It may sound simple, but unfortunately there are still people who think it is acceptable to drink and drive and I am determined to do all I can to help change these attitudes.”

The opportunity to sit down and chat with a racing legend is one that I will never forget. I honestly believe that Johnnie Walker made a good decision in appointing Mika Hakkinen as their spokesperson because who better to tell you a thing or two about responsible driving then a two time Formula One champion, right? When in Manila, I’m sure each and everyone of us has come up with  a bucket list of things we want to do. Unfortunately, there are times when we feel we won’t be able to accomplish everything on that list for a myriad of reasons, but usually the excuse is simply, “I can’t”. Well, continue to read on because once you’re done with this article, I assure you  that you will have no excuse whatsoever to not be able to pursue the things you want to do. 

Dear readers, meet Jessica Cox. 

According to several articles, 

Jessica was born without arms but decided, in 2008, that she wanted to fly. She earned her Sports Pilot certificate after three years of training, and was named the first woman to pilot an aircraft using only her feet.

“My right foot is on the yoke, and my left foot is on the throttle. I use both feet, and I don’t have special equipment. I just fly the plane,” she said.

She describes the experience of flying as freeing.

“It’s a big challenge,” she confessed, “but once you’re in the air it’s so empowering.”

Despite her disability, Jessica enjoys gymnastics and swimming, and holds a double black belt in taekwondo. Cox also drives her own car and is a certified scuba diver. She later learned to surf while she was in Hawaii She is also an accomplished motivational speaker.

“If I was born with those two arms, I don’t think I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish as much as I have as well as meet and go all over the world as much as I have,” she said.

“It was a long process. It didn’t happen overnight. I went through a lot of times when I said I wished I had arms or I wished that things were different. But I came to the point of acceptance right at the beginning of high school. And I said you know what, this is my life and I choose to be grateful for what I have and I choose to wish for more.

“When I look at myself in the mirror, I see myself as complete… because this is my life and I’ve been able to do so many things because I’ve been blessed with the family I’ve been given with.”

She then gave these tips to achieve success:

• Learn to accept yourself. Once acceptance is reached, you see yourself as complete. You move forward in believing that you can do anything.
• Have faith in God. When it comes down to those difficult moments, it’s your faith that shines through and gives you strength.
• Accept whatever challenge you are given and overcome it.
• Encourage others, especially your children, to do the same. Believe in them and let them know that there are no limits out there.
• Don’t give in to fear. Fear stands for False Evidence that Appears Real.

 Durex has received special permission for this campaign from the authorities because they are not just selling condoms but promoting safe sex education, the Brand Manager claims. They are not fighting over the RH Bill either. They just import rubber…and distribute and market it….and its an open economy. Their closest competitors can’t promise the quality of safety that Durex does. Hence, the claim to public health. There’s nothing political about it, nothing religious……but putting the choice in the hands of the Individuals.

I still don’t understand. How can a campaign remain apolitical with CARLOS CELDRAN as its brand ambassador? Also, will the beloved public figure of Celdran not get tainted by going commercial through his association with Durex?

The prude in me decided that perhaps it is these minimal moments in a city’s popular avenues and hang-outs that finally determine the history of its PEOPLE and culture. I witnessed the quiet ribbon-cutting of Durex’s SEXHIBIT by Carlos Celdran, entered the sex-museum tent hoisted in the vicinity of pubs and bars like Kiss, Pussycats, Rogues, Heckle and Jeckle and what not….and learnt in half an hour the unspeakable facts of the S word that no text book or treatise, family or barkada can possibly talk about as comprehensively.
