Nanay Lesing, Boy Abunda’s mother, passed away yesterday. She was 90 years old.
Boy’s sister, Eastern Samar congresswoman Maria Fe Abunda, announced the news on Facebook today.
According to the congresswoman, a funeral mass will be held at Arlington Memorial Chapels in Quezon City starting today.
Boy has been vocal about his love for his mother, even publishing a book last 2018 called Nanay’s Gay Boy. He also delivered a speech called Dearest Nanay when he received his doctorate degree during the Philippine Women’s University graduation exercises in 2016.
In the book, the host wrote, “Two things come to mind when my name is mentioned—that I’m devoted to my mother and that I’m proudly gay.”
He added, “Nanay is the center of my universe. She is the beginning and the end of most of my decisions. Nanay, thank you for teaching me to value my core as it is my truth, for inculcating in me, that who I am is special. That my story, is one that I can be proud of.”
