Beauty Confidential: Why Self-Care Matters

Remember that time someone noticed you look “good”?

I bet you dismissed them and said “Parang hindi naman?” because you’re shy or you simply don’t see what others see in you. In the back of your mind, you know you are “pretty cute”, but never fully accepted that you’re beautiful. I’m telling you now that you really are beautiful in your own way.

What’s making me quite sad is that studies show that only 7% of Filipinas believe and can confidently say that they are beautiful. However, as low of a percentage as that is, at least our women believe in the importance of taking care of themselves.

Personally, even in my teenage era, I knew that I needed to take care of my well-being. After an exam week, I’d make sure to destress by getting a manicure and pedicure or a 99-peso hair spa at a neighborhood salon.

It’s those simple things that made me happy. I figured I get so stressed over things that won’t really matter in the future and looking back, it never did. Things will pass and everything will fall into the right place. You only have one life and only YOUR happiness matters.

As Liz Lanuzo of Project Vanity said, “No one else can better take care of you but yourself”. And it’s true.

Moving forward, my self-care routine evolved and I started to venture into buying beauty products. It really started as a casual “pick-up-something-you-like-in-the-grocery-store-as-a-reward-for-being-a-good-girl” type of thing.

It feels so freeing to know that I don’t look grumpy after I put on these products. I feel much better and more confident about myself overall. I also learned from Darlyn Ty-Nilo of BDJ that “Taking care of yourself first allows you to be more and do more. As cheesy as it may sound, but when you feel good about yourself, you really feel like you can conquer the world, one goal at a time.”

Attending Beauty Confidential, a beauty bootcamp event by Belle de Jour (BDJ) Power Planner and Project Vanity, was basically heaven here on earth for beauty junkies like me! We learned a lot about how to care for ourselves better.

From pampering to skincare to putting on makeup, 20 beauty and wellness brands participated to be part of the biggest beauty event of 2018.

Aside from diving into a beauty products buffet, we also learned so much from experts and enthusiasts who tackled and revealed beauty and self-care secrets which, I believe, helped bring out the beauty and confidence in us. Also, we got to try eyebrow threading for free (hehe).

Aside from attending events, here are some things I do as part of my self-care routine that you can also try and accomplish:

  • Regular Massages – I wasn’t super fond of them at first because I’m not so keen on the idea of others touching my skin, but I’m used to them now. I normally go once or twice a month.
  • Morning Meditation – 10 minutes of pure silence and thanking God for all His blessings. That’s all I need.
  • Netflix Marathon – Some say it’s a waste of time, but I need this to satisfy my soul during times when I don’t have anyone to talk to.
  • Skincare Routine – I don’t have the best skin, but knowing that I’m doing something to improve it helps.
  • Healthy Diet and Exercise – Last but not least, I’m trying to cut down on sweets and bad carbs. I also try to exercise at least once a week to maintain my daily 12k steps.
