Ant-Man Review: Dissecting Marvel’s Ant-Man

“You think you can save the world? You’re a thief.” This is a Yellowjacket understatement that the Ant-Man ripped off through a badass heist to rescue mankind.

The Ant-Man was born to forefathers Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby. After 56 years in the ink prison, the Ant-Man finally enters the realm of film as the 12th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The Ant-Man movie focuses on Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), an ex-convict who’ll do anything by hook or by crook to support his beloved daughter. With him are Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym (Michael Douglas) and Dr. Pym’s daughter, Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly).

Marvel has produced a fast-paced and compelling through Ant-Man with rich cinematography, a one-of-a-kind suit, and pin-drop sharp sound effects. Let’s dissect some more of its crunchy sub-atomic details.

From Yes Man to Ant-Man, Director Peyton Reed delivers taste-for-haste scenes crafted with humor. Shooter’s Michael Peña, Blurred Lines’ T.I. and Dark Knight’s David Dastmalchian make for great cast members, too. The trio’s chumminess and cleverness ensure that there are no dull moments in this one.

Edgar Wright, an avid Ant-Man comics geek collaborated with Joe Cornish and pulled off a fresh storyline with raw and original content. The Ant-Man will never be the same again without Saturday Night Live Writer’s Guild Awardee Adam McKay and Paul Rudd’s signature deadpan delivery. Since the movie is practically made by comedians, expect stiff cheeks and inevitable belly laughs.

Titanic’s Russell Carpenter brings stunning visual effects to cinephiles once again, as well, with most shots shown in worm’s eye view angles to amplify the Ant-Man’s half-an-inch size. Prepare for Milkyway galaxy-like sub-atomic clouds!

Redefining cuteness, the Ant-Man’s minion ant army personifies pet-like traits with motifs from Saharan Silver Ants.

Did you know that Marvel Studios designed a real Ant-Man suit for Scott and his stunt double? It may not be as techie as Iron Man’s wardrobe, but the Ant-Man suit boasts of cool Pym molecules that allow Scott to change in size: the red juice is for shrinking, while the blue juice is for enlarging objects.

The ear-gasmic sound effects in the Ant-Man are courtesy of Frozen’s Christopher Beck. You can actually hear the crispy cracking of bathroom tiles in this one. And oh, listen carefully to the Yellowjacket laser gun during the epic toy train battle. Ring a bell? It’s the Star Wars AT-AT maingun-make.

Disney and Marvel Studios humanized Dr. Pym’s character and made him extremely relatable. The Ant-Man proves that your past doesn’t define you. It’s all about determination towards redemption. To top it off, here’s a piece of advice from Dr. Pym: “Second chances don’t come around all too often. I suggest you take a really close look at it.”
